The recent Tomb Raider reboot is interesting to play, with a lot of modern traits (hope you enjoy ducking behind cover), but there are long sections where it's an amazing simulation of a young woman terrified for her life or in serious injury.

Add that to the lovingly-detailed "you have died" animations (and yeah, I know they were in the originals, but Lara is no longer 24 polygons) and I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a hidden commentary track of the developers fapping to it.

I understand the next two are better in this regard.

Before I got back into games, I thought the Conan video on this was pretty shocking

Funny, I heard the most recent Tomb Raider - Shadow of the Tomb Raider - was among the most problematic, with the lead almost the antagonist. Certainly damaged and destructive.

you guys are nuts! God of War is great at what it is trying to be not I'm not sure how it could be much better . plus it was on sale for $21

when you can pay $21 you just gotta

ciderpress, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

Kratos’s pathos never hit home for me, so that’s one thing it could’ve been better at. It is fun to play, but I’ve had no desire to go back to it after beating it.

My Nier finally arrived!

ciderpress, Sunday, 2 December 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link

that's pretty cheap!

This is the part that sold me: "2017’s first (and potentially only) big-budget video game about the income gap, the ethical and personal complexities of salvaging modern capitalist societies.."

ok guys -

ps4 gets opened in 4 days. two kids, 10 and 7. i am not into them playing SHOOTING games so fortnite is out. i am definitely getting them fifa 19. but.. what else? a driving game a bit more arcadey than GT maybe? they love super mega baseball. the littlest actually really loves Stacking. they both like Beyond Good and Evil though it is a bit complex for them. they like action. and they like competition, particularly if it can be calibrated/handicapped - super mega baseball is great for this.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 9 December 2018 11:23 (five years ago) link

I play Dirt4 and Driveclub and both are fairly arcadey especially with some of the driver assists but still quite tough for an under 10 I think. Maybe a karting game would suit more?

PS4 is crying out for something like Modnation Racers. Maybe give TrackMania Turbo a whirl? Rocket League is good fun too.

My kids absolutely love the Ratchet & Clank games. Platforming and shooting (but in a completely cartoony way). Same with the various Lego games.

groovypanda, Sunday, 9 December 2018 11:42 (five years ago) link

I was watching broadcasts of combat racer Onrush this morning as it's a PS+ freebie this month.

Everything on screen looks so BUSY with bright colours and flashing things and a dozens of cars all crashing and racing at once and arrows and weird scoring and pick ups and a billion things to see. I think I'm getting too old to play online.

Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Sunday, 9 December 2018 12:02 (five years ago) link

Tracer do your kids know the lego games?

L'assie (Euler), Sunday, 9 December 2018 12:25 (five years ago) link

oh xp right

My family got me Spiderman. Haven't played yet but looks cool, though not sure how violent the violence is. that is, hitting but no killing, maybe? I'm sure bad guys have guns.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 9 December 2018 12:32 (five years ago) link

xpost Oh, maybe nu Tetris?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 9 December 2018 12:33 (five years ago) link

trackmania turbo is rad

they do know the Lego games yes but not well - they've played a bit of Lego star wars on my phone

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 9 December 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

they both LOVE real cars, talking about cars difft models etc - so I'm thinking Drive Club might be a more accessible alternative to GT for them

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 9 December 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

ok the birthday game lineup is:

- fifa
- driveclub
- super mega baseball TWO (omg!)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 9 December 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

if i were 10 or 7 i would love that combo

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 December 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

i would still love that combo

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 December 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

yeh Driveclub a better choice than GT, and not just for kids!
there's a remake of Crash Team Racing coming next summer btw.

anybody got any experience setting up subaccounts for kids on a PS4? i did it for my PS3 and it was 100% not worth the effort

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 9 December 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

Depends whether you expect them to ever play online, but if they will at some point in the future, and you don’t want to pay a psn subscription each at that point, then yep sub accounts are worth it. I don’t remember it being tricky to set up, but we did ours years ago so the procedure’s likely to have changed by now anyway.

JimD, Sunday, 9 December 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

driveclub is so good. the rain effects are obscene. tough game tho.

hope SMB comes to switch

That's about right. Spider-Man doesn't kill any bad guys, even the ones he throws off of skyscrapers. Some bad guys have guns and rockets.

Onrush is pretty sweet so far, but I wouldn't call it a racing game. More of a destruction/stunts thing. There's no finish line, for example.

Some nice looking stuff on sale right now. If I have literally never played any Tomb Raider ever, are either Tomb Raider Definitive or Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration worthwhile?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 02:51 (five years ago) link

i think the tomb raider games are all super mediocre though i havent played the reboot ones except for a bit of the first

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 02:57 (five years ago) link

The rebooted Rise of the Tomb Raider was the first one I played and I thought it was excellent (but then these sort of third person shooters/platformers/puzzlers/foraging type games are right in my wheelhouse)

groovypanda, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 08:46 (five years ago) link

There's diminishing returns as the series goes on, but the first rebooted tomb raider is an excellent popcorn third person shooter/platformer/puzzles/foraging type game. Worth the sale price imo.

closed beta (NotEnough), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 11:48 (five years ago) link

Tomb Raider Definitive is something like $7, Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Years is something like $17. $7 seems like a no-brainer for a AAA game. Is $17 a good price for the second one? I should probably just wait for the price to drop even more in the future.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 14:18 (five years ago) link

games go on deep sales so frequently nowadays, imo you shouldn't buy anything unless you're intending to play it in the next couple months. that's how they get you. steam sales taught me that it's too easy to buy a bunch of well regarded games for $8 and then still not have played them a year later when they go on sale for $5

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 14:46 (five years ago) link

Fair enough. My attitude the past few months has been that I bought a PS4 so late in the (er) game, and mostly just for a handful of specific titles, that as things on my list get discounted I generally pick them up. $5, $7, even $10, compared to the Switch they might as well be paying *me,* and since I'm not paying for PS4 (or Switch) online access I've more or less saved the sum total of most of the games I want.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

it's not even that late in the game, still 2 years until the expected ps5 release and then there always a year or 2 of crossgen releases

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 15:31 (five years ago) link

Yeah, good point. What are the high profile releases in the pipes? Resident Evil 2 reboot, Last of Us 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Death Stranding, Rage 2, Doom Eternal, Ghost of Tsushima ... I guess we don't know for sure when most of these are coming out or if most of those will be ps4 or 5.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

TLOU2 is all but assuredly a PS4 title, which Naughty Dog has explicitly said. I don’t know about the others though.

Natalie Imbroglio (Leee), Wednesday, 12 December 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

I assume all of those will be PS4 2019? I have no idea what advances are or could be in store for Ps5, but I'm more than happy with the PS4 right now, and it's several years old.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

all the games they've shown thus far will be on ps4, whatever the big ps5 exclusive release title is won't be shown until the ps5 reveal.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 18:13 (five years ago) link

TLoU 2 GO ON SWITCH U COWARD

(even more not gonna happen than persona 5)

||||||||, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

tlou is first party sony, might as well ask for zelda on PS4

whereas persona 5 is atlus who release the vast majority of their games on nintendo systems hmmmm

ciderpress, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 18:43 (five years ago) link

And whose protagonist was just revealed as a new playable character in one of their flagship titles, hmmm.
