Nah there's a different ring, it will be very clear.

I've taken to just hitting random things with my sword, because hey, why not, though that's a pretty time consuming strategy.
the souls games are the spiritual sucessors of the king's field series where checking every single, inconspicous wall for secrets was ostensibly standard practice. dark souls seems pretty tame comparably, the huge tree is noteworthy enough to warrant closer inspection imo
― chihuahuau, Saturday, 17 November 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)
No, I agree with Josh, a wall-behind-a-wall is proof that this game is meant to be played with some manner of spoilers-- I mean, theoretically there'd be a red mark with another player's advice? but I haven't been playing online
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 17 November 2018 22:19 (seven years ago)
oh definitely, the game expects and encourages players to rely on online play, the devs even leave hardcoded messages on places like crystal cave
i was unlucky and had no messages there so obv i missed the great hollow yet a double secret wall inside an imposing landmark still ranks lower in my bullshit scale than arbitrary secrets in totally mundane places. in dark souls 2 there are some examples of the latter that to me seem even more unlikely to be found without explicit guidance than the hollow or gwyndolyn, though tbf they only have crap loot inside and not a whole area/boss
― chihuahuau, Saturday, 17 November 2018 22:53 (seven years ago)
Yeah idk, I think there are tonnes of non-discovery related aspects of the game that I just would never have gotten. The usefulness of certain rings, most of all-- would probably never have been compelled to wear the rusted iron ring in Blighttown, or figured out that I needed to wear the Abyss Ring in order to access that particular section below New Londo. The arbitrariness of getting to the DLC, saving Solaire, all that shit, it just seems... well, reminiscent of the incredibly obscure requirements that they place on characters in ADOM to obtain an "ultra ending"-- 1. feed artifacts to the demented ratling, 2. find a random assortment of obscure objects for the hag, 3. obtain several highly corrupting and difficult to find items and wear them whilst walking through the chaos gate, 4. oh, and don't forget to save Khelevaster, 5. oh, and he'll eventually, if you do x y and z, give you the Trident, 6. oh, and don't forget to have [x] number of corruptions present when you walk through that Chaos gate, or your 40 hours of hard work in building up this Titan of a character will be lost to unseen forces of Chaos in a moment...
Playing a game with an FAQ next to you sounds cheap and Virgo-ish but I rather liken it to reading "Finnegan's Wake" with a "Guide to..." next to you
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 17 November 2018 23:48 (seven years ago)
Well, I didn't get the Dragon Prize but I did kill the dragon. And then... everyone else. Gwenyvere and Gwyndolin. Merchants. Blacksmiths. Randoms around Firelink. I felt really bad about it, I hate being rewarded in games for amoral behaviour. Gwyn killed me on my first try but I'll get him second try.

You wouldn't bet against him, folks!
― Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Monday, 19 November 2018 09:47 (seven years ago)
Another odd element of this game is that it is so packed with creative creatures and adversaries, yet the asylum demon makes a repeat appearance not once but twice. Despite that I'm finding the third one as weirdly challenging as the stray demon, probably most due to my impatience of having to run the gauntlet of all those other encore demons, plus those annoying giant worms.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 November 2018 22:29 (seven years ago)
I've heard that they were running out of time in development, and people complain about some of the late-game areas feeling unfinished.
The stray demon though, fun fact, you can see it through the bars when you're going down the very first hallway after leaving your cell.
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 19 November 2018 23:18 (seven years ago)
Yeah, I remember that! You can certainly hear it at least.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 November 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)
Btw congrats fgti! You're a Dark Souls phenom.
Since my thing is Dark Souls 3 multiplayer, it never ends. It's nice in that I don't have to buy any other games, but on the other hand my omelettes aren't getting any better.
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 19 November 2018 23:29 (seven years ago)
Think I finished Demon Ruins, but not much down there? Found Solaire by a bonfire, and several giant monsters around the corner. And maybe a big gate or two I can't open? What's left but taking the elevator up to Fire Witch?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 20:27 (seven years ago)
There's a different path out of there that leads to another boss (required to finish the game). It's uh, perhaps not the most obvious.
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 20:42 (seven years ago)
Huh. Well, I killed the Fire Asylum Demon, I killed the Centipede Dragon, I've explored up to a big locked door with a couple of maggots that gave me Sun Medals, and I've found that big lava field past Solaire with what seems like 6 or so giant huge dragon-sized monsters.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:03 (seven years ago)
Might want to spend some time splashing around in that lava field (I always ignore the dragon butts though).
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)
I killed two of them with a bunch of arrows, so that's a start!
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:15 (seven years ago)
Because there have been a couple of weirdly locked gates, or what looked like locked gates, I had wondered if all those dragons was the end of some other route vs the start of a new one. Regardless, I just assume several dragons standing in lava was a sign I should go a different way. Um, I guess not!
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:16 (seven years ago)
it's a sign you should ignore them as much as possible and find the bonfire behind the invisible wall in one of the buildings in the lava pool. fuck this area and the upcoming boss, good luck!
― chihuahuau, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)
I think the big locked gate there has to do with Solaire's quest, I think I did it once. It's an alternate route (with added *lore*).
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 21:32 (seven years ago)
I can only think of one person that's sent me on any clear quests, and that Onion Knight, who had me open the gates to Sen's Castle and later had me fend off a couple of silver knights for him at Anor Londo (weird, since when he was mad he killed me pretty easily). Solaire, I don't recall getting any request or instruction from him or anyone else. Maybe a woman kneeling at the Firelink who's not there anymore?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 22:22 (seven years ago)
Often you just need them to find them again and talk to them. The questlines can be pretty arcane and sometimes require backtracking that you would never do normally. Worth looking up after you finish.
You might be able to find the Onion dude in the next area if you look around.
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 22:33 (seven years ago)
He's the best, that's why I paid my extortion money to be his friend again.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 23:01 (seven years ago)
okay yeah, magic fire boots were the hint I needed, plus yours. I think I found where the next boss is, but in the meantime I backtracked and I've been shooting arrows at the zombie dragons to make them kill each other.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)
Given its pain in the ass reputation, Bed of Chaos really wasn't that bad. It helps that if you die after knocking out either of those side bundles of branches, when you come back you don't have to do it again.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 16:35 (seven years ago)
Did you poke around that area by the boss door and find an annoying place with a lot of poison?
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 16:53 (seven years ago)
nope!
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 18:02 (seven years ago)
Oh ok, it's just that you may have left your onion friend in there, nbd
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)
I can go back!
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 18:44 (seven years ago)
You may have to make a quick trip back to the Blighttown swamp first, not entirely sure
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 18:50 (seven years ago)
you're probably right, after anor londo he shows up in firelink, then blighttown, and only then izalith iirc. i don't know if you can skip any of these
― chihuahuau, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 19:08 (seven years ago)
Hmm, have I seen him in Blightown? Maybe. Can't remember. Maybe I do remember him saying he's going down below or something? I assumed he was going to the Catacombs.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 20:37 (seven years ago)
> Maybe I do remember him saying he's going down below or something?
that's in firelink and he's referring to blighttown. there he'd ask you for moss and if you give it some he'll move on to izalith. if it's not too late he should be in the poison swamp now, on the wall opposite the bonfire cave
― chihuahuau, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 21:23 (seven years ago)
Mm
I would recommend to you Josh that you read up about Onion Friend In Izalith before you speak to him, just a thought. It was one thing I wish I'd read-the-walkthrough for before doing
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 22:09 (seven years ago)
agreed, especially if you want to grab the 2nd of only 2 slabs in the main game. it's dubious whether you'll pull it off even knowing about what to do, it's that silly
― chihuahuau, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 23:57 (seven years ago)
Newbie question - is there a particularly good character type and artefact to choose at the start of the game? Especially if you're the sort of player without much experience of fighting games...
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 23 November 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)
You can mold any of them how you want, but probably Warrior or Knight because they both start with a shield that blocks 100% physical damage. Or pyromancer if you want to hang back and use ranged attacks.
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 23 November 2018 16:27 (seven years ago)
Oh and then the only real choice is whether to take the master key or not. It opens up a few doors without having to find a different key, some of which allow accessing areas early. Idk, I say take it, it makes the world feel more open (and you can get some items that may help in the early game).
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 23 November 2018 16:31 (seven years ago)
I started Warrior but I'd recommend Bandit I think, Spider Shield is such a great thing. Definitely Master Key as starting gift
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 23 November 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)
honestly I thought the beginning part of the game was challenging enough even with the master key, I'm not sure how much more trouble it would be without the master key.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 November 2018 19:53 (seven years ago)
It wouldn't be that different if you take the main route...but you can't go through Havel to the basin early, can't go to the Valley of the Drakes to grab the items there or take the back door down to Blighttown, etc.
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 23 November 2018 19:59 (seven years ago)
I know I didn't do the first couple of things, not sure about the third. For some reason I feel like there were a few other locked doors it helped me pass?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 November 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)
Spider Shield is such a great thing
the master key is an experienced player item but it certainly won't hurt to have it as a newbie. it's the most mechanically useful of all starting gifts
― chihuahuau, Friday, 23 November 2018 20:30 (seven years ago)
Me having the Master Key meant that on my first try, I went the wrong way for about two days, and not-understanding-the-currency-of-the-game meant I was resolutely going back to the face of the Undead Dragon to try and rescue my measly 800 souls over and over, and got bopped many times by a dude with a large club, and iced by skeletons over and over
But it's been worth it. I must confess I went right into NG+ and it's been a blast. The world feels so small now
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 23 November 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)
I can't remember where I got the Spider Shield. Depths? It was super resistant to poison, but I mostly stuck with the grass crest shield I just popped purple moss. And as for rings, almost always Havel's Ring, except as needed. Or maybe covetous gold ring, when I'm grinding. But I got the other gold ring I can't take off earlier, which limits rings (though most of the rings seem pretty useless, just like most of the other shit I've accumulated).
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 November 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)
Spider Shield is on the ledge overlooking the giant rat in the Depths, yes
I love the Grass Crest Shield and was so happy to get it back. I read that some players who enjoy going two-handed just put the GCS on their back for the passive stamina upgrade
― fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 23 November 2018 22:58 (seven years ago)
I think at a certain point I did start fighting mostly two handed. Every once in a while there would be enemies I was used to killing with one hit or so who were giving me trouble, and then I realized I was holding my sword with one hand instead of two. Big power boost with two hands!
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 November 2018 23:47 (seven years ago)
Had to take a little break for holiday and family stuff, but dove back in today. New Londo Ruins didn't seem so terrible, but it took me a while to realize (afaict) that there is no bonfire, so was pretty sloppy with my estus and died picking a fight with a drake, then lost 30K souls fighting the zombie dragon by the bridge getting back to where I wanted to be. At this point though I don't think souls matter too much - I'm leveled enough - but it was nice to get another ember and fire keeper soul, so I upped my estus and pumped my sword to +13. So that'll be fun.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 00:02 (seven years ago)
I do have to say it is totally perverse, probably intentionally so, that after introducing curses as a totally overpowered attack to avoid, in New Londo curses are not a weapon but a defense, and you need to use them on yourself rather than on an enemy.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 02:11 (seven years ago)
Killed the Four Kings on my second try! But I will say this: I think they're my favorite boss so far, not a mess of teeth and weird design, just this mysterious thing that looms in a total darkness that messes with your depth perception as you swing wildly trying to kill it/them. It helps that I'm pretty strong, and they're not the fastest boss(es), but they're still a pretty cool way to convey menace with minimal design. Would have died a million times had I not known to put on that ring. Same as the curse to fight the ghosts. Do people playing totally blind just give up at this level?
I liked a lot of the other enemies here, too. The Darkwraiths aren't too bad, but they have neat attacks and can not be knocked back (poise?). The ghosts themselves are pushovers but I like that they can attack through walls, different ways, and need to be fought a specific way. And those giant slime spitting blob things ... they're mostly in the way, but I like the slime attack that slows you down and drains your HP. Again, all pretty easy at this point, but I was pretty into it, lack of bonfire aside.
