it seems very deliberately designed to be... not fun? thx rockstar, hate to enjoy my time playing video games

i found the original boring after a while and never completed, though it looked gorgeous etc. what I've read about this makes it sound like more boring (and more gorgeous)

i get ppl not liking this, but i'm finding the deliberately slow pace enjoyable
― circa1916, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 19:37 (seven years ago)
My game has been extremely buggy so far, sometimes in a mission-breaking way. I think I'm going to wait for Online to dig back into it.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 19:47 (seven years ago)
Yeah it’s not for everyone
― F# A# (∞), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 19:54 (seven years ago)
I'm mostly enjoying it. I'm old and in no hurry.
My latest favourite bug is that my spare horse appeared out of nowhere halfway through a mission and now won't stop following me.
He used to be my main horse. I think he's jealous and lonely :(
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)
i've met lots of people who became unhealthily emotionally attached to their horse
― F# A# (∞), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)
i'm enjoying myself too, although i do worry about what a psychopath coldblooded killer i turn into when i play these games. i was riding my new horse (who i was already unhealthily emotionally attached to) when suddenly i was ambushed by those fucking O'Driscolls. i was attempting to flee and accidentally made my jump leap off of a bridge running over train tracks, horrifically killing the horse in the process. i went on a rampage revenge, and when it was over and i had looted the bodies, i methodically started stacking them on the train tracks, thinking that it would be satisfying to wait until a train came along and see what it would do to the bodies. as i carefully positioned the third body so that it's neck was right on the track, a stagecoach came along and witnessed it. i tried to murder them, too, but they ended up reporting it. only a $15 bounty for all that! and i never did get to see what the train would do (i'll try again soon, and be more careful this time)
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:56 (seven years ago)
er, weird typos in there but you get the drift.
I’ve been playing this like a saint. All that WANTED n BOUNTY stuff seems like a real pain in the ass. Feeling the urge to get gnarly though. Will also join the choir and say the music in this is really impressive. Way smarter and more interesting than it needs to be.
― circa1916, Thursday, 15 November 2018 19:24 (seven years ago)
i'm only in the middle of chapter 3 still and the take from story missions alone has made bounties basically a non-issue, so if that's trouble for you just keep playing. i did love the parts in chapter 2 where i was basically skint and had to rob coaches out of desperation, but it's nice to not worry about it as well.
the music is amazing, both the ambient music and the campfire singalongs!
― oiocha, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)
not a big deal, but i can't play five finger fillet because the button commands are too small for me to see. i have a flat screen display that seemed enormous to me when i first got it (maybe 30" wide, 35" diagonal), but apparently it is too small for modern day games. same with dominoes - the pieces are too small, even when i go into the special view that's supposed to allow you to take a look at the pieces.
missing out on hot domino action, no fair
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:33 (seven years ago)
Ah, I guess this doesn’t apply to you if you can’t even see the commands, but it seems the way to ace those five finger fillet games (if it wasn’t obvious) is to get the pattern down and then turn off the sound and don’t look at the screen when you’re doing it. The sound and visuals totally throw you off.
― circa1916, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:38 (seven years ago)
i think i just need to stand up a few inches away from the screen

lol, I think I need to just save this and fuck things up a bit. This is the first time I’ve played dominoes since I was a kid and it seems deadly boring. Poker is fun, but the ai feels way simplistic. Maybe gets more sophisticated later?Looking forward to blackjack, haven’t encountered it yet.
― circa1916, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:43 (seven years ago)
Haven't been feeling this as much starting about halfway into Chapter 4 (starting 6 now), it's gotten less open world and more linear and some of the missions are like really easy COD shooter missions on rails.
― louise ck (milo z), Friday, 16 November 2018 02:58 (seven years ago)
first thing i did when i had the chance was hogtie an innocent passerby and chuck them in a river to drownmy wife, sitting on the couch beside me, looked up from her phone and was like ‘wtf is wrong with you’
my wife, sitting on the couch beside me, looked up from her phone and was like ‘wtf is wrong with you’
eheh, reminds me when I went all Westworld in the first one : there's a brothel at some point and after shooting the bad guys I hogtied all the prostitutes, put them in a single room then shot them all in the head. Then I tried to shoot everybody in the village but they kept respawning and nothing special happened like a huge police intervention or something...being a psychopath is no fun.
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 16 November 2018 08:48 (seven years ago)
Their game mechanic is interesting - aside from honor system, there's just very little reward in being a dick. Stealing stagecoaches and horses require long rides for low rewards, robbing campers nets you a couple of dollars. You have the freedom to be a psychopath but it's even less fun than doing it in GTA.
Revising my earlier statement, turns out Chapter 6 is fantastic. This is the first video game that's actually kind of moving for me.
― louise ck (milo z), Friday, 16 November 2018 11:12 (seven years ago)
Yeah, it's clearly more annoying than fun to do things against the law. Although it's quite easy to escape the police (at least in RDR1).
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 16 November 2018 11:21 (seven years ago)
I rode past a man who died right in front of me and fell off his horse. No music, no cut scene, no interaction, just a random NPC natural causes death. I was wondering if the game would have killed him if I wasn't there to observe it.
He had 48 cents.
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2018 12:21 (seven years ago)

i keep thinking horse skeletons are dinosaur bones and standing in front of them waiting for a prompt.
finding all the dreamcatchers/bones/cards seems near-impossible!
― oiocha, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)
It's one thing to find them, another thing to successfully pick them up as the camera glides past and highlights a pack of cigarettes you don't have capacity to carry
― Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 16 November 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)
i found a couple cigarette cards
haven't even started looking for dino bones
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 16 November 2018 16:41 (seven years ago)
I saw the same NPC falling off the horse and dying thing last night. I also looted him, but not before carrying him off into the woods so I could do it in hiding like a total weirdo. He was carrying a dollar and change.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)
Ahah this game makes people do weird stuff : lots to work on for an analyst !
― AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:47 (seven years ago)
yeah i realized very quickly robbing people yields very little positive results
even some heists aren't worth it, but you kinda have to do some of them
same with killing random people, it all just lowers your honor rate, which is why i started aiming for a high honor rate
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 16 November 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)
Don't you get wedding rings and such fairly frequently?
― badg, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:55 (seven years ago)
yeah, i've tried selling some and so far they've been valued at around $10
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 16 November 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)
psst - when robbing people, the real money is in the saddlebags!! you can find gold nuggets and good tonics whereas usually they have less than $2 on them.
unfortunately, this usually means you have to kill them and their horse.
― oiocha, Friday, 16 November 2018 18:22 (seven years ago)
dangit! i even remember coming across that tip somewhere a week or so ago, and i completely forgot.
on the other hand, in the tradition of fallout 4 i am roleplaying as the dumbest guy in the west
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)
When I'm feeling murdery I wander around trying to find one of the enemy gangs, feel shorted so far because I only got to slaughter two Klan rallies. (Yo, Rockstar, I'd pay for DLC that lets me just roam the west hunting Pinkertons.)
― louise ck (milo z), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:21 (seven years ago)
that’s what Online is going to be i thinkOr some variation thereof
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:34 (seven years ago)
i would pay for DLC that adds equippable bifocals that enable me to see the dominos clearly
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 19:42 (seven years ago)
Again the game favours slow play here. You can soothe and pat and brush and feed the "orphaned" horses and they'll love you and then you raid the saddlebags - or you can fire straight in and risk being kicked to death.
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2018 21:28 (seven years ago)
is there any way to get rid of a bounty other than paying it off? when i first encountered a bounty in the game, i could have sworn that it said something about the bounty simply going away, if you waited long enough (though maybe i was mixing this up with just being WANTED). but i must have been especially evil during the first mission in Strawberry, because i have a $250 bounty there that hasn't gone away in weeks of game-time.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 22:44 (seven years ago)
Once you're wanted paying it off is the only way. I think the bounty stays even if you die.
― louise ck (milo z), Friday, 16 November 2018 23:30 (seven years ago)
The guy who did the GI review never paid any of his bounties for the whole game. Thought that was a fun role-playing idea.

Does anyone else have a laggy map screen? Maybe it's just on the standard ps4, but pretty annoying.
Had my young godson around today so the only thing I could show him was hunting animals. Spent a lot of time shotgunning fish.

Even though this game embodies a lot of what I dislike about modern AAA games (story driven, hand-holdy, easy) I’m finding myself really digging it.The detail, polish, and atmosphere put it on another level. Just an amazing world to sink into and experience. And I know the slower, deliberate pace is a dealbreaker for a lot of ppl, but I think that’s actually really neat and refreshing tbh.
― circa1916, Sunday, 18 November 2018 04:32 (seven years ago)
Yeah I’m playing god of war now and not really feeling itI know it’s a totally different type of game and I’m only a few hours into gow but stillBought mortall kombat xl for $9 too

Ha, I have not played the new GoW, but the “weary bearded tough man teaches his son the ways of this harsh world” angle they’ve pushed to the forefront is v. much an example of that AAA ~story driven experience~ I do not want.
― circa1916, Sunday, 18 November 2018 06:34 (seven years ago)
What games do you like
― F# A# (∞), Sunday, 18 November 2018 06:40 (seven years ago)
The Dark Souls series basically rejuvenated my interest a couple years back when I thought I was done with games. Also love the 2016 DOOM.Dig those for a multitude of reasons, but common thread seems to be that they’re ruthlessly precise gameplay driven experiences that deliver the same adrenaline shots I had playing games as a kid. The ~cinematic~ experience in big budget games is mostly deadly dull to me. Red Dead is a rare exception because it’s just so exceptionally lavish and smarter than most of the other ones.
