useful i guess. have heard it's a better youtube app than some of the dedicated tv gadgets like Apple tv

I'm just playing through Super Mario 3 on the Switch NES emulator. It's amazing, obviously, but how TF did people get through this game without save points?

(I mean, apart from the obvious answer - long boring childhoods with a *lot* of spare time.)

Haven't found the whistle! I just wanted to run through all the levels without warping. I played this when I was a kid, but I never had a NES, so I never had time to get past World 2 or so.

Just that some of the later levels are *so* frustrating, I can't imagine having the time/skills/patience/psychopathy to finish the game, let alone if you have to start every level from scratch - there don't seem to be checkpoints?

games back then would have been like an hour long if they weren't difficult enough to trip you up regularly, it was content through challenge rather than content through content

beating the game was the end goal of days/weeks of practice

yeah i don't know if i ever actually made it straight through SMB 3, i remember worlds 6-7 being a nightmare, as cool as they were (Kuribo's shoe!)

the world with the piranha plants is the nightmare for me, but i can usually push through it. when i was a kid i would usually only play long enough to get a couple warp whistles, then skip to the end. it was the perfect after-school game, in that way. as an adult, whenever i revisit i go for 100% completion, start to finish, and it's an incredibly fun 8-hour adventure.

I've never played it before now; I'm just save-stating between every level and treating it like it's a contemporary die-n-retry platformer.

oh, that's right. forgot which thread we were on. i've streamed smb3 before, but just from my laptop, emulating it.

i kind of find it baffling that the switch doesn't have streaming capabilities, built-in.

the entire switch OS is like 200kb, nintendo likes to keep things lean at the expense of online features

i mean for eshop purchases, if you got the physical you'll get it when you redeem your nintendo points from the cartridge

note that you can redeem a couple bucks worth of nintendo points from any physical game that's less than a year old just by putting the cart into your switch and going to the software options (+ button on the home screen), i didnt know about this at first as it's not obvious and missed out on doing it with my zelda cart

i was really into the wii for about a year. then i tried to mod it so i could have every game of all time FOR FREE, and it worked! for about a month. then it stopped working, i tried to fix it and i bricked it. then wii died in my heart.

switch doesnt even have netflix since theyre playing chicken with nintendo over who pays for making the app

Neither of them really has a reason to blink either. There’s no way the few dozen people complaining about it in enthusiast forums are enough of a PR hit to force Nintendo’s hands, and there’s no way the size of the opportunity is enough to force Netflix’s.

Maybe with YouTube arriving (presumably also without any incentive payments from Nintendo) that might put more pressure on Netflix.

Software development can be pretty much arbitrarily expensive, and at Netflix’s scale (ugh) it’s probably automatically millions of dollars to hit a new platform. Things like shitty smart TVs are definitely paying Netflix to be on their platform bc without Netflix they’re dramatically less attractive. Netflix isn’t gonna sell any incremental Switches and Nintendo would rather hoard cash than spend it on anything with unclear value to its bottom line.

we were at a dr office today that had a wii setup and I played Mario galaxy on it and now I want to play more but I don’t have a wii or a Wii U. I could borrow my moms wii (not U) or theoretically buy a U but I’d rather just wait until they’re rereleased on the switch is there any chance that happens and if not (or not any time soon) what’s the best way to play it?

I play old mario galaxy on Dolphin on my PC. You can crank up the resolution, AA etc and it looks glorious. The wii remotes connect via Bluetooth and I bought a USB wii bar so I didn't need an old wii around. You can use an xbox controller if you don't want the faff but with galaxy the remotes are u&k.

I'm sure it'll happen in the next several years but who knows exactly when. there's a ton of backlog for them to bring over and they haven't tipped their hand on what they're gonna do with the GameCube & Wii gens yet, those games aren't in HD so it's not quite as direct a port as the Wii U stuff they've been bringing over

in the meantime there's dolphin if you have a decent pc

kinda hoping to get a black friday switch but also realize that anywhere with a black friday switch, i am gonna get beat to the punch because i do not wake up at 6am

saw one here in canada at a drugstore where it's the regular price, but it comes with a $125 gift certificate. apparently sometimes they'll apply the gift certif right there but even if not i am there often enough to use it all up

the UI for the NES emulator is really nice... but the games... have not aged well. roll on the SNES selection though

mario 3 is better in the all stars / GBA versions, with the updated graphics. although the core gameplay is obviously still solid

balloon fight is a timeless masterpiece

does the Switch version of Gradius still have massive slowdown?
