once i got out of the prelude and opened up horseshoe overlook, i stopped talking to dutch completely. i've been having a great time just wandering around and getting into situations. i wish i could find the trapper guy, though, because i've had a legendary bear pelt stowed on my horse for a looong time now.

half of the dust-ups i get into are caused by me pressing the wrong button. two randos in Valentine were talking shit on me because of a previous incident where i pressed the wrong button and had to murder a few people. so i went over there with the intention to Antagonize him a little. but then i accidentally punched him and all hell broke loose, again. i'm starting to get a reputation in Valentine, even though when i ride through i say hello to everyone.

As with Mafia 2 it appears most of being an outlaw is running errands.

Yes - but when the balance is too much "find x and take it to y" and too little "rob a bank" it's all work and no fun. Mafia 2 was the worst I played for that.

RDR2 is better balanced but running love letters across country doesn't seem very Billy the Kid.

yeah, the music is consistently excellent. there's a new d'angelo song in there, too! (i listened to it online, haven't heard it in the game yet because i haven't advanced the story very far)

I'm gonna say that i am not enjoying this game

it seems very deliberately designed to be... not fun? thx rockstar, hate to enjoy my time playing video games

i found the original boring after a while and never completed, though it looked gorgeous etc. what I've read about this makes it sound like more boring (and more gorgeous)

i get ppl not liking this, but i'm finding the deliberately slow pace enjoyable

My game has been extremely buggy so far, sometimes in a mission-breaking way. I think I'm going to wait for Online to dig back into it.

My latest favourite bug is that my spare horse appeared out of nowhere halfway through a mission and now won't stop following me.

He used to be my main horse. I think he's jealous and lonely :(

i've met lots of people who became unhealthily emotionally attached to their horse

i'm enjoying myself too, although i do worry about what a psychopath coldblooded killer i turn into when i play these games. i was riding my new horse (who i was already unhealthily emotionally attached to) when suddenly i was ambushed by those fucking O'Driscolls. i was attempting to flee and accidentally made my jump leap off of a bridge running over train tracks, horrifically killing the horse in the process. i went on a rampage revenge, and when it was over and i had looted the bodies, i methodically started stacking them on the train tracks, thinking that it would be satisfying to wait until a train came along and see what it would do to the bodies. as i carefully positioned the third body so that it's neck was right on the track, a stagecoach came along and witnessed it. i tried to murder them, too, but they ended up reporting it. only a $15 bounty for all that! and i never did get to see what the train would do (i'll try again soon, and be more careful this time)

I’ve been playing this like a saint. All that WANTED n BOUNTY stuff seems like a real pain in the ass. Feeling the urge to get gnarly though.

Will also join the choir and say the music in this is really impressive. Way smarter and more interesting than it needs to be.

i'm only in the middle of chapter 3 still and the take from story missions alone has made bounties basically a non-issue, so if that's trouble for you just keep playing. i did love the parts in chapter 2 where i was basically skint and had to rob coaches out of desperation, but it's nice to not worry about it as well.

the music is amazing, both the ambient music and the campfire singalongs!

not a big deal, but i can't play five finger fillet because the button commands are too small for me to see. i have a flat screen display that seemed enormous to me when i first got it (maybe 30" wide, 35" diagonal), but apparently it is too small for modern day games. same with dominoes - the pieces are too small, even when i go into the special view that's supposed to allow you to take a look at the pieces.

Ah, I guess this doesn’t apply to you if you can’t even see the commands, but it seems the way to ace those five finger fillet games (if it wasn’t obvious) is to get the pattern down and then turn off the sound and don’t look at the screen when you’re doing it. The sound and visuals totally throw you off.

This is the first time I’ve played dominoes since I was a kid and it seems deadly boring. Poker is fun, but the ai feels way simplistic. Maybe gets more sophisticated later?

Looking forward to blackjack, haven’t encountered it yet.

Haven't been feeling this as much starting about halfway into Chapter 4 (starting 6 now), it's gotten less open world and more linear and some of the missions are like really easy COD shooter missions on rails.

eheh, reminds me when I went all Westworld in the first one : there's a brothel at some point and after shooting the bad guys I hogtied all the prostitutes, put them in a single room then shot them all in the head. Then I tried to shoot everybody in the village but they kept respawning and nothing special happened like a huge police intervention or something...
being a psychopath is no fun.

Their game mechanic is interesting - aside from honor system, there's just very little reward in being a dick. Stealing stagecoaches and horses require long rides for low rewards, robbing campers nets you a couple of dollars. You have the freedom to be a psychopath but it's even less fun than doing it in GTA.

Revising my earlier statement, turns out Chapter 6 is fantastic. This is the first video game that's actually kind of moving for me.

Yeah, it's clearly more annoying than fun to do things against the law. Although it's quite easy to escape the police (at least in RDR1).

I rode past a man who died right in front of me and fell off his horse. No music, no cut scene, no interaction, just a random NPC natural causes death. I was wondering if the game would have killed him if I wasn't there to observe it.

i keep thinking horse skeletons are dinosaur bones and standing in front of them waiting for a prompt.

finding all the dreamcatchers/bones/cards seems near-impossible!

It's one thing to find them, another thing to successfully pick them up as the camera glides past and highlights a pack of cigarettes you don't have capacity to carry

haven't even started looking for dino bones

I saw the same NPC falling off the horse and dying thing last night. I also looted him, but not before carrying him off into the woods so I could do it in hiding like a total weirdo.
