diablo 3 is as addictive as everyone says, and "PERFECT FOR SWITCH"tm

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Sunday, 4 November 2018 11:44 (seven years ago)

It really is, it really is, I played for like seven hours yesterday

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Sunday, 4 November 2018 17:19 (seven years ago)

I need help with something to buy!

I've finished BOTW, almost finished Inside and Super Mario Odyssey, got bored with Shovel Knight, and too-stuck-to-progress on Celeste and Hollow Knight.

What's this Diablo thing? Am contemplating Donkey Kong or Skyrim.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:01 (seven years ago)

do you have a sense of what types of games you'd like? 2d platformers? adventure games? RPGs? shooters? etc

DKC tropical freeze is very good imo, it's basically just a modernization of the SNES DKC formula so if you liked those you'll like this and vice versa. very lush, overproduced 2d platforming.

i havent played skyrim since 2012 or so, so no idea how its held up. i have a couple friends who missed it the first time around and are playing it now due to wanting another large world game after BotW, would be a little weird to go in that direction though i think.

ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:25 (seven years ago)

Prolly old tomatoes for most ppl but if u haven't played hyper light drifter it's a good un

esby, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:28 (seven years ago)

Thanks HLD looks good!

xpost Basically I want a big expensive-ass-looking game that's fun to play and look at but not punishingly difficult to play. I was thinking Skyrim might be good after BOTW, but you don't think so?

Sort of tempted to get a PS4 for RDR2 and Spider Man but that's a lot of $$$ and there's something so charmless about a PS after spending time with a Switch.

Also sort of tempted to buy a Wii U and get all the Marios and Zeldas. I mean, I'm sure they'll come out for the Switch eventually, but it could be a while.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:06 (seven years ago)

the marios and zeldas will definitely all show up eventually

ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:14 (seven years ago)

xpost Have you played Guacamelee? That looks fun.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:15 (seven years ago)

skyrim would fit that first part i suppose, just know its a very different game from BotW, 'large map' and 'fantasy setting' are really the only things they have in common

donkey kong is more on the difficult side like those other platformers you listed as being stuck on, though maybe not quite that hard

ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:17 (seven years ago)

It has Funky Mode now

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 5 November 2018 03:10 (seven years ago)

oooh, very nice

Karl Malone, Monday, 5 November 2018 03:13 (seven years ago)

tropical freeze is definitely on my list

Karl Malone, Monday, 5 November 2018 03:14 (seven years ago)

it's tasty

ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 03:15 (seven years ago)

So YouTube is on this now

nate woolls, Friday, 9 November 2018 00:53 (seven years ago)

useful i guess. have heard it's a better youtube app than some of the dedicated tv gadgets like Apple tv

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 00:58 (seven years ago)

I'm just playing through Super Mario 3 on the Switch NES emulator. It's amazing, obviously, but how TF did people get through this game without save points?

(I mean, apart from the obvious answer - long boring childhoods with a *lot* of spare time.)

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 November 2018 10:43 (seven years ago)

excited to have youtube recommend hundreds of three-hour-long rants from alt-right dipshits on yet another device, thx nintendo

i want donald duck to scream into my dick (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 9 November 2018 11:23 (seven years ago)

xp the warp whistle, dude! Also, I would not be at all surprised to hear that a lot of people would leave the NES on/on pause and turn off the TV.

I for one am happy to be able to watch Contrapoints on my Switch now.

a film with a little more emotional balls (zchyrs), Friday, 9 November 2018 13:00 (seven years ago)

Haven't found the whistle! I just wanted to run through all the levels without warping. I played this when I was a kid, but I never had a NES, so I never had time to get past World 2 or so.

Just that some of the later levels are *so* frustrating, I can't imagine having the time/skills/patience/psychopathy to finish the game, let alone if you have to start every level from scratch - there don't seem to be checkpoints?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 November 2018 14:39 (seven years ago)

games back then would have been like an hour long if they weren't difficult enough to trip you up regularly, it was content through challenge rather than content through content

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 15:13 (seven years ago)

beating the game was the end goal of days/weeks of practice

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 15:13 (seven years ago)

yeah i don't know if i ever actually made it straight through SMB 3, i remember worlds 6-7 being a nightmare, as cool as they were (Kuribo's shoe!)

Nhex, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

the world with the piranha plants is the nightmare for me, but i can usually push through it. when i was a kid i would usually only play long enough to get a couple warp whistles, then skip to the end. it was the perfect after-school game, in that way. as an adult, whenever i revisit i go for 100% completion, start to finish, and it's an incredibly fun 8-hour adventure.

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

I've never played it before now; I'm just save-stating between every level and treating it like it's a contemporary die-n-retry platformer.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 9 November 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

stream it imo

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 18:44 (seven years ago)

hmm yeah maybe

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 9 November 2018 19:00 (seven years ago)

theres still no way to stream from switch without a capture device is there?

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 19:24 (seven years ago)

oh, that's right. forgot which thread we were on. i've streamed smb3 before, but just from my laptop, emulating it.

i kind of find it baffling that the switch doesn't have streaming capabilities, built-in.

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 19:30 (seven years ago)

the entire switch OS is like 200kb, nintendo likes to keep things lean at the expense of online features

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 19:51 (seven years ago)

xp eh, that would require more wasted horsepower imo
yeah exactly

Nhex, Friday, 9 November 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

I could buy a doohickey

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 9 November 2018 20:38 (seven years ago)

they're expensive doohickeys i've looked into it

ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 21:07 (seven years ago)

silby can you take pictures of the screen every once in a while and then upload them? we can call this a "photo stream"

Karl Malone, Friday, 9 November 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)

btw if anyone already bought smash i got the download code for piranha plant in my email the other day, wouldn't have noticed it among all the usual confirmation spam if someone hadnt mentioned it to me

ciderpress, Saturday, 10 November 2018 18:43 (seven years ago)

Hmmm. I preordered through amazon. Don't know if that qualifies.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 10 November 2018 19:33 (seven years ago)

i mean for eshop purchases, if you got the physical you'll get it when you redeem your nintendo points from the cartridge

ciderpress, Saturday, 10 November 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)

Ah, I see. Thanks.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 10 November 2018 19:53 (seven years ago)

note that you can redeem a couple bucks worth of nintendo points from any physical game that's less than a year old just by putting the cart into your switch and going to the software options (+ button on the home screen), i didnt know about this at first as it's not obvious and missed out on doing it with my zelda cart

ciderpress, Saturday, 10 November 2018 20:03 (seven years ago)

Yeah, i've missed that up to now.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 10 November 2018 21:12 (seven years ago)

no more netflix on switch after January 19

"Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii - including the Netflix Channel - after January 30, 2019"
https://devices.netflix.com/en/game-consoles/wii/

that would mean no more youtube, either, i guess?

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:14 (seven years ago)

you mean on wii?

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:23 (seven years ago)

er...yeah. man, i'm not exactly firing on all cylinders today!

honestly sometimes i forget that the wii still exists

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

Ubisoft hasn’t! The new Just Dance came out for it.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:33 (seven years ago)

i was really into the wii for about a year. then i tried to mod it so i could have every game of all time FOR FREE, and it worked! for about a month. then it stopped working, i tried to fix it and i bricked it. then wii died in my heart.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

switch doesnt even have netflix since theyre playing chicken with nintendo over who pays for making the app

ciderpress, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Neither of them really has a reason to blink either. There’s no way the few dozen people complaining about it in enthusiast forums are enough of a PR hit to force Nintendo’s hands, and there’s no way the size of the opportunity is enough to force Netflix’s.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:43 (seven years ago)

how expensive can it be to make the app

||||||||, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:45 (seven years ago)

Maybe with YouTube arriving (presumably also without any incentive payments from Nintendo) that might put more pressure on Netflix.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:45 (seven years ago)

Software development can be pretty much arbitrarily expensive, and at Netflix’s scale (ugh) it’s probably automatically millions of dollars to hit a new platform. Things like shitty smart TVs are definitely paying Netflix to be on their platform bc without Netflix they’re dramatically less attractive. Netflix isn’t gonna sell any incremental Switches and Nintendo would rather hoard cash than spend it on anything with unclear value to its bottom line.
