im def going to check out Hollow Knight. if it's as cool as it looks then $15 is a steal.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:50 (eight years ago)
Hollow Knight is like a cross between Steamworld 2 Dig and ... Dark Souls (from what I know of it). And the price is absolutely right. Unlike, say, Little Nightmares, which also looks cool, but not for $30. Or Don't Starve for $20, which seems a bit high for something that's still of indeterminate stability on the Switch. Isn't there a sale coming up?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 June 2018 16:53 (eight years ago)
sale now on, 25-50% off Zelda, Splatoon, FE Warriors, Overcooked, Pacman CE etc https://e3.nintendo.com/sale/
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:04 (eight years ago)
also arcade Donkey Kong available for the first time ever digitally, the rights for using the original code were a legal mess so this is a big surprise (with a big price tag to go along with it ofc)
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:08 (eight years ago)
excited to try golf story on sale, too
― Tapes 'n Tapes of Osho (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)
i still haven't made any big digital purchases on Switch. are game purchases finally tied to the user account, so if i pick up a new Switch down the road i can transfer my purchases without hassle?
― Nhex, Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:08 (eight years ago)
yes games are tied to account though save data is tied to the hardware unless you have the online service
― ciderpress, Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:18 (eight years ago)
cool cool. i'll probably get Golf Story, maybe the Rabbids bundle...
― Nhex, Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:23 (eight years ago)
had some coins so picked up golf story. kinda slow paced but fun enough !

i got Hollow Knight. yall were right, the game rules so much. i love how it plays, how simple the controls are. the art is great and there is a real crunch to all of your actions. the rebound of your 4-way attack is an important mechanic. i can tell the boss fights are going to rule. i fought two bosses and both of them i was just jumping and attacking and healing, nothing else, and they ruled. level design wise it feels close to Metroid, especially in these initial cave areas. but it's way less frustrating to play.
Octopath Traveler demo has been very nice. played as the hunter, had a pet cheetah with me. im going to have to get this game. just the way they did the 3D world maps is so cool. plus the combat is fun and flashy and classic Final Fantasy ATB style. def check out this demo.

i smile when i saw they have 90s cyberpunk computer game D/Generation on the Switch eshop.
The game takes place in a slightly cyberpunk futuristic setting in 2021. A French company called Genoq has developed a series of new genetically engineered bioweapons, which have run out of control and taken over Genoq's Singapore lab. The main character is a courier making an emergency delivery by jetpack of an important package to one of Genoq's top researchers, Jean-Paul Derrida (a name likely inspired by the philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Jacques Derrida), and who is happily oblivious to the carnage until the lab's doors lock behind him. His customer is ten floors away, all of them crawling with bioweapons.

But miss my Amiga. Or I miss myself when I had an Amiga.

Man, I thought I was facing a boss in Hollow Knight but it just turns out to be a hard to beat Husk dude, lol. This game is challenging!
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2018 12:41 (eight years ago)
finished shovel knight first campaign. great fun! gonna leave a little break before hitting the followup ones.
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Friday, 15 June 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)
sorry if i missed this discussion upthread, but do you all typically use switch as a handheld, dock it and use a larger display, or back and forth? i've been doing about half and half.
― obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 15 June 2018 16:21 (eight years ago)
Ours rarely leaves the house because it’s the family’s but pulling it out to use handheld on the couch right in front of the TV is a great way to take up less space in the living room with whatever nonsense I’m playing.
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 15 June 2018 16:23 (eight years ago)
i play about half and half. when docked i go through a big monitor or on the wall w a projector. but it's so great to be able to play some quick games before i go to sleep without sitting in front of a huge monitor. or on the bus. i don't have a car & use public transportation so lots of opportunities to play Switch there.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 June 2018 16:29 (eight years ago)
I play mostly docked and exclusively at home. Well, I sort of take that back, certain games lend themselves to portable more than others, and it's useful when my family is watching something on TV. But other games I need the big screen to see what's going on.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2018 16:34 (eight years ago)
quick games before i go to sleep
i tried this once but couldn't figure out how to be comfortable. i ended up laying down pretty flat, holding the screen above me, and nearly dropped the whole thing on my face

this seems like the business for bed-switching
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 15 June 2018 16:41 (eight years ago)
I keep the dock in a cabinet and the weak wireless controllers seem to struggle with it. I'll use the kickstand with detached controllers for some games, but I mostly act like it's a new DS. Finally got Mario+Rabbids. Feels kind of like Zack and Wiki felt on wii -- a different kind of game for me but probably good?
― Tapes 'n Tapes of Osho (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 June 2018 17:07 (eight years ago)
xpost i wonder if that thing could be attached to my nose or ears somehow - would be nice to position the screen a couple feet away from my head at all times like a steadycam
― obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 15 June 2018 17:30 (eight years ago)
i mostly play docked at home but use the portability a lot when I visit my parents etc
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 June 2018 17:33 (eight years ago)
god I'm excited for Smash
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 15 June 2018 21:01 (eight years ago)
tbh Nintendo didn't leave you much else to be excited for. they didn't even mention online at E3, surprisingly.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2018 21:42 (eight years ago)
they didn't mention online because they already provided an update about it last month, and it's basically a shit sandwich anyway so why draw attention to it in that setting
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 15 June 2018 21:58 (eight years ago)
e3 mostly made me excited for fire emblem which is gonna be a long wait
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 June 2018 22:42 (eight years ago)
Daemon X Machina could be pretty sick. I’m not familiar with Armored Core, maybe I should look that up and see what they’re like.
― valorous wokelord (silby), Friday, 15 June 2018 22:44 (eight years ago)
it's what from software used to make before they invented dark souls. mech action games. kinda bland visually
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 June 2018 22:53 (eight years ago)
When I first got the Switch I almost never played in handheld mode, always Docked - especially because I only played Zelda - but as time went on I got too lazy to turn on the TV and just played it in handheld
― Nhex, Saturday, 16 June 2018 03:06 (eight years ago)
valkyria chronicles 4 out on september 25. hopefully the switch version is good
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)
Speak of the devil, Inside and Limbo coming in a couple of weeks, but no idea what they are going to charge.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 15:59 (eight years ago)
unless they say otherwise, i'd assume they're not changing anything. they're just ports, right?
― obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:00 (eight years ago)
probably will be 15 or 20 bucks that's become pretty standard for small scope indies
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:05 (eight years ago)
maybe cheaper for limbo since it's pretty old now
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:06 (eight years ago)
That's not hindered game prices on Switch. They come late, higher priced and, sometimes, degraded in quality. I mean, I've complained before, but DK: Tropical Freeze was an old game and a Nintendo port, but it costs MORE on Switch than it did on Wii-U!
Hollow Knight is running like a charm though.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:12 (eight years ago)
I want to say also that Dark Souls Remastered seemed priced the same across the platforms, though of course, it came out for other platforms last month and remains MIA for Switch. Which makes me suspicious of what they are doing to it to fix whatever problem they were having.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:13 (eight years ago)
Nintendo's whole strategy is "protect the selling price of our games" which has a halo effect on indie devs of allowing them to do the same. $20 indies seem unjustifiable to steam shoppers when AAA games are 75% off three months after launch or whatever but they look like a good deal on the eshop
anyway I would've paid $60 for Celeste
― valorous wokelord (silby), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:15 (eight years ago)
would have paid that for Golf Story, Brodus
― scopin' VARs (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:19 (eight years ago)
games are not expensive software for the amount of resources that go into making them, even at $60
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)
'full price' has held at $60 through 2 decades of inflation and games have like 20x the content they used to at that price
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:24 (eight years ago)
lumines remastered is out next week, kinda feeling like I might need something meditative like that in my life right now
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:30 (eight years ago)
I'm gonna get that. I hope Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Expensive Tetris Tetris Effect comes to Switch. Announced for PS4/PSVR but nobody has said the word "exclusive"…
― valorous wokelord (silby), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:32 (eight years ago)
lumines is like the one puzzle game that's even more primal & hypnotic than tetris
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:35 (eight years ago)
We've gone over this before. In the case of Donkey Kong specifically, "full price" means more than the more or less same game cost just a couple of years ago for the previous Nintendo system. I totally get why God of War or whatever would cost $60, but when we're talking smaller indies ... if Hollow Knight can be $15, more indie titles can be $15. And if Dark Souls Remastered can be $40, more games can be $40.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 17:26 (eight years ago)
if someone thinks they can make more money charging $40, they will do it. but i suspect there are more axes than old/new and nintendo/indie when you break down game pricing.
