yeah third party support will happen with time. game dev cycles are much longer than the year and change the console has been out, and wii u being a big flop meant that all the third parties were taking a wait and see approach and have to play catch up now.

and in the meantime, we get to enjoy ports of 5 year old games at full price 😶

octopath traveler is a pretty substantial 3rd party exclusive on the way, as was Mario & rabbids. it's not like there's zero support. E3 is in a few weeks.

$60 is a pretty fair price for a lot of video games, imo. The “I can’t believe I’m paying full price for a late port” thing just doesn’t make sense to me.

My daughter is playing it right now, and I'm in the middle of a couple of other things. But titles like Mario and Zelda, they are totally familiar to me. I mean, I love them, but I get it even before I start playing them. Honestly, Nintendo exclusive titles like that are why I have a Nintendo. However, stuff like Doom, that was totally novel to me. I've never played a game like that before. And when all these other games like God of War or whatever come out for other platforms, I watch a few clips and think, boy, they look really cool!

Speaking of power, why is Nintendo obsessed with releasing underpowered consoles?

$60 may indeed be a fair price for a title. But when it is $60 only on the Switch, and $20 everywhere else, that's sort of bullshit. I appreciate the fact that the Dark Souls remaster, whenever it comes out for Switch, is priced the same across the consoles.

They make more money releasing “underpowered” consoles. They tried releasing a console with competitive processing power with the GameCube, and it was not a smashing success. They have not tried to compete on specs ever since. The AAA console experience is on PlayStation and Xbox now and that’s where it’s likely to stay. Nintendo doesn’t need those customers to be successful.

yeah I've played almost all the zeldas, but this one is unlike any other

the switch isn't underpowered for a console that can run off a battery, it's actually quite impressive. i think people will be surprised at the quality of graphics it can push once devs have had more time with it. im expecting metroid prime 4 to get some 'wait, the switch can do that?' reactions when we finally see it.

Honestly, another reason I didn't start Zelda is because I was expecting to start Dark Souls. But I guess with Dark Souls off the table for who knows how long, maybe it's time for Zelda.

I am very late to rocket league, but I don't know if I'll ever get tired of it. I might throw my switch against a wall, though.

I bought my Switch about five months ago, have pretty much only played Zelda the entire time, and am very, very happy.

I got Odyssey in February, played it a couple times, it's nice, but Zelda keeps wanting to be played, and I'm still loving it.

Another reason I haven't played Mario or Zelda yet is that I know they are awesome, but right now, if I played them, I've got nothing waiting in the wings ...

Josh I don't think you realize how much time both of those games can take... doesn't matter much what's waiting in the wings when you're living in the Zelda universe or collecting endless moons.

If your other concern is that there's not enough Switch games to play, maybe spend 6-8 months playing Zelda, then there'll be new games out?

This thread is basically the Infinity War of people trying to convince Josh that maybe Nintendo is a company that knows what it's doing.

sushi striker demo is worth checking out if you like this sort of color matching puzzle game. it's quite different from a match-3 game mechanically and the production values are high for the genre - fully voiced Saturday morning cartoon style cutscenes and the like. very cute/funny. it's definitely a touchscreen game though, the joycon controls feel like an afterthought/handicap.

Because I am familiar with the worlds of Mario and Zelda (even if I haven't played these specific games) I'm not quite ready to spend months on them. I wanted something different ... like Dark Souls, dammit! But Doom is pretty different, that'll keep me going, especially because I'm slow. (Though the slowdowns in that game, even post patch, are maddening and, at times, game-breaking.)

yeah I played the Sushi Striker demo last night too. Agree that it is better on the touchscreen. The anime is real delightful though and I'm glad they brought it onto the Switch (it was first announced as a 3DS title, now it'll be both). Not sure if I'll pick it up, but it does make all kinds of real great puzzle game sounds.

Nintendo actually ran an eShop sale on ARMS earlier this year so they might someday again put a first party retail title on discount.
