The Nintendo Switch

Yeah, I never had a U so ports are fine with me. But if Nintendo wants to keep this thing rolling they need to keep things interesting, which means not only predictable Nintendo ports or, for that matter, predicable titles (Kirby, Metroid, etc.), but uncharacteristic edgy legacy ports like Dark Souls, Doom, and Wolfenstein, and new games that keep up the "must play" allure. For me, the games I have pre-ordered are DK:Tropical Freeze, Kirby (for the kids) and Dark Souls. Other than that, I suspect more and more indies, like if Hollow Knight ever comes out, but AAA Nintendo titles would be good to get on the public schedule. Having things on the calendar to look forward to (which we'll get, sooner or later) keeps up the excitement.

Cool. I hope it's not just, like, Animal Crossing, which I know my younger daughter would be into but I just don't care about.

I've learned I can't concentrate on more than one game at a time, and I guess I'll be playing Zelda for the next quadrillion months, so it's all fine with me.

Definitely picking up Dark Souls as I've heard it mentioned so often in reference to BOTW. But generally all I want is HD remasters of old Zeldas and, I dunno, a Red Dead Redemption port

BTW, was having a technical issue with my Switch that took almost two-hours (!) to resolve on the phone with Nintendo Customer Service, but they were sooooooo nice and patient and fun to talk with. The second guy they forwarded me to after a while, he and I just talked Celeste for a few minutes.

Yeah had a great chat with the CSR about Stardew Valley when I called to set up a fix for our left Joy-Con

the relative popularity of Nintendo franchises is interesting to me, like you may think of Mario and Zelda as the big ones but it's actually Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon

I love this system so much and would sacrifice animals if it meant they start releasing Virtual Console for it... my favourite thing about the Wii was Sin And Punishment localized

The results were promising and suggested Switch should be able to run each game at least as well as its original state. How much better, of course, will depend on Switch's final hardware.

we know theres a NES emulator included in the current firmware, and theyre planning to run out old NES games on a rotation as part of the online service, but idk about other VC

i'd love a virtual console for switch and would happily buy vc games i've already bought for wii/wii u/3ds because i am a massive sucker but i suspect that nintendo might have stumbled upon a more lucrative way to keep selling their back catalogue via the nes mini and snes mini

imagine they just built an actual Virtual Console, instead of these classics, that runs everything their VC did. Stick some old Wii bits in it or something. And they just released "limited edition" virtual consoles in the shape of an NES, SNES, N64, etc. man i should work for nantendo

That's almost what's happening isn't it? I mean I got the impression the SNES mini hardware was pretty much the same as the NES mini hardware.

but like, put a little wifi or lan cable in there and let me download games i pay you for kinda thing. like the Wii VC, but on one of these things. (instead of just letting me hack games onto it or whatever.)

The problem with a theoretical N64 mini is that the N64 canon is actually so fucking skewed in its estimation. If I could go back in time I'd probably murder Leopold 2 but I'd definitely fire Rare's art department

You are forgetting Goldeneye!

Although maybe it doesn't hold up against the FPS of today.

goldeneye was legendary in its time but its hard to play today imo

keep in mind nintendo has previously been able to permanently block hacked 3DSes from their online services, so there's some risk there w/ hacking switch

Diddy Kong Racing has a fucklot of "uh oh!!! I'm Banjo!!" bullshit and I can only play it wearing blue blockers

The main issue with N64 in 2018 is that it looks horrendous on HDMI without mods, lag is also an issue

yeah i think a N64 mini is a lot less likely, the emulation still isn't a perfect science for that one. i can't play iggy's reckin balls on emulator.

new single player Splatoon, so stoked!

xp splatoon is an excellent online team shooter imo. online is currently free until they launch their full online service later this year after which it'll be like $20/year or so?

What can you tell me about these? Don't know the former, and the latter looks like ... a kid game? I just played a bit of the Kirby demo with my daughter and - seemed kind of button mashing simple and chaotic, if cute. Almost made me want to cancel my pre-order.

But Smash, I'm excited about that. And Little Nightmares, whatever that is, looks spooky and cool.

never played captain toad but i've been intrigued, it looks almost like a nintendoized monument valley? happy to hear they're porting it over

Captain Toad is a lot of fun if you like puzzle games, the main part of the game is moving the diorama around in 3D to plot out a course, with all the usual Nintendo polish in level design. The original was priced as a budget title and was quite short, about 10-12 hours iirc, but there were harder challenges built into the stages so would take a lot longer to fully complete. Happy to see its getting a new lease of life but won’t pick it up again until it is super cheap.
