xbox/PS4 era has conditioned me to paying at most £30 for a game. the £50 standard for switch games stings (particularly first party nintendo games, which tend to hold their value)

I played too much Skyrim since Christmas and my eyes feel permanently crossed and my body feels permanently angry at me

was up too late playing VS. Super Mario Bros.

it's a really good port. so after they made Super Mario Bros. they made this version for the arcade and they switched it up to make it harder. there are only 4 1-UPs in the entire game (there are 10 in the NES one). the staircase in 3-1 with the turtles that you can use to do infinite lives? it's been nerfed, one of the turtles is a goomba, it no longer works.

the warp zone in level 4-2 that takes you to 8-1 in the NES version? it goes to 6-1! plus not only that but some levels are entirely new and were made specifically for this version. 6-3, 6-4, 7-2, 7-3 are all new levels that would end up re-used in the famously difficult Japanese "Super Mario Bros. 2". it's insane.

i made it to 6-3 but i kept dying and getting kicked back to 6-1. it requires really accurate jumping. highly recommended and actually kind of cool in a historical sense! it's almost Super Mario Bros. 1.5

mario and rabbids is fantastic and the difficulty goes up a fair bit towards the end.

I need to polish that off, beat the midboss of world 3 in my last session.

yes mario rabbids is excellent and as jamiesummerz says it gets hard towards the end (but not unfairly). the opera boss is one of my fav bosses ever!

how do we feel about ARMS

i wish i had someone nearby irl who wanted to play with me for it

what is the gameplay like? i imagine it is something like Punch Out with motion controls.

it’s more of its own thing than that but it’s a good way to get a sense of whether you might enjoy it for yrself imo

ARMS, like Splatoon and Rabbids, is totally a title I would try for maybe $40, but not $60.

if only there was some kind of way to acquire second-hand goods shipped from locations near and far

It never quite feels like its in right, seems like it will be putting a lot of pressure on the analogue sticks, or that something will be pressing against the screen. I have no idea how they expect you to fit the joycon straps in, too - I generally just have the Switch + games. Also, I underestimated how many physical games I would buy (I have 9 so far, and it only comfortably fits 5 - I've had to double-up in the slots).

tl;dr - I, too, would like to know what is a good case!

Honestly, the prices aren't too awesome on eBay, either - if a game starts overpriced at $60 then $45+ for something used doesn't scan so much as a "deal," especially since a game like, for example, Splatoon 2 or ARMS I can buy new at Costco for $50. I have also read at least a couple accounts of people switching (har) cartridge stickers to scam suckers and stores.

imo you will experience diminishing returns from buying more games. it is better to complete the games you already own to 100% and stop worrying about things you can't control, such as the price of gasoline.

I think you are both right and that is generally the strategy I am pursuing. in terms of purchasing games, there are a few factors at work in my case. There are games I want to play, games that kids might like to play, games the kids are even able to play, and games we could all play. maybe they got it from me, but there is no way my kids have the patience or diligence to play something like Zelda. but at this point I do, which is why I bought it. But I'm not going to play it until I make more progress with other games. the flip side is I got stardew Valley not just because some of you recommended it, and not just because it got a lot of really positive reviews, because at least one of my kids likes Animal Crossing. But Animal Crossing is more their speed, and they got bored and or frustrated with stardew Valley, because there's so much to keep track of. Even Snipper clips, a game I bought for everyone to enjoy, they weren't so hot on it. Though it is a lot of fun. I should i guess get in the habit of taking games out from the library and trying them out.

apparently the cardboard kits themselves will be optional and the patterns can be printed on other material. no doubt folks will be 3d printing robots and pianos for this

so yeah the patterns will be free. so if you end up ruining a piece of cardboard then just buy a new cardboard box for $1.99 and spend 15 minutes or so to cut out new patterns. sounds like there is some foam board and string involved too but again, nothing you can't find in the craft section for under $5

The Toy-Con all make use of the main Switch console and Joy-Con in unique ways. The most basic creation is the Toy-Con RC Car (which is actually a remote-controlled bug-like creature not entirely dissimilar in concept to the Hexbug Nano range of toys) and this takes around 10 minutes to make and uses the HD Rumble of two Joy-Con to move around the room; you control the action with the Switch touchscreen and you can even view the world through the right-hand Joy-Con's IR camera, sending the bug on secret missions inside unexplored nooks and crannies. Outside of that the potential for competitive play is obvious; one of the demonstrations we took part in was a sumo battle where the last bug inside the circle wins.

At the other end of the scale there's the aforementioned piano, which is utterly, utterly ingenious. Everything is made from cardboard, right down to the keys which use folded flaps to spring back into place when pressed. The Joy-Con slots into the back, with its IR camera pointed at a small slot just above the rear of the keys. When one is pressed, it pops into view through the slot and reveals small strip of reflective tape - the camera picks this up and plays the relevant note. The same visual trick is used to change the tone of the keyboard, adjust the pinch, record patterns and much more besides; you can even use the slot on the top of the piano to insert a cut-out (created by yourself) which changes the sound of a keypress based on the shape of cardboard.

ha, that's more or less what my girl said and i think it misses the point. you're not buying a cardboard piano, you're buying an experience! A NINTENDO EXPERIENCE!

i dont think polyphony is possible. it sounds like it supports sequencing though so id imagine you can probably layer multiple patterns to that effect. seems more like a diy synth than a for-real keyboard

Ingenious special effect use of rather simple technology put Nintendo on the map as toymakers in Japan so this really feels like a throwback to that.

they do! i was wrong. i had a friend once who made a IR drum machine that worked by punching the air and it could only register one hit at a time to a MIDI trigger. so this seems like newfangled computer magic.
