surprised the number for women is so low, given what playing games w boys is like
― difficult listening hour, Monday, 11 December 2017 03:20 (eight years ago)
I'm not that surprised actually. The way women compete with each other can be pretty brutal!
― Nhex, Monday, 11 December 2017 04:30 (eight years ago)
that... was not my takeaway
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 11 December 2017 04:49 (eight years ago)
I think Nhex may have chosen one of the more awkward possible ways to convey the sentiment that “it is not surprising that women are not intimidated by competing or playing with men, considering how competitive women can be with each other”
― El Tomboto, Monday, 11 December 2017 05:16 (eight years ago)
This is also weird because isnt one of the sexist-git arguments about how many women gamers there are, is "no they just play mobile games, and those dont count!".
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 11 December 2017 05:23 (eight years ago)
One quibble with that finding: I'm not sure that this statement is well-phrased:
"I would spend more time playing mobile games if I knew I was playing with or against players of my own gender"
It's ambiguous between "only players of my own gender" and "at least some players of my own gender". It's not clear that the 25%/47% are all saying that they would prefer to play exclusively with men.
― jmm, Monday, 11 December 2017 05:47 (eight years ago)
thanks tomboto - i was sorta trying to get at that, you said it better
― Nhex, Monday, 11 December 2017 06:41 (eight years ago)
yeah, sorry if i was unnecessarily snarky there; i know you well enough to read that as somewhat ill put and not from a place of evil
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 11 December 2017 06:50 (eight years ago)
i didn't mean that they're intimidatingly competitive i meant that they hate women

In the wake of the game’s release, people have also done things like releasing a mod that gives dark skin to key character Cpt. Bernard as a joke. The mod is titled “Inclusive Cpt. Bernard,” and it got over a thousand upvotes on Kingdom Come’s subreddit in reaction to Eurogamer’s review of the game, which criticized its politics.

Increasingly, I feel that those who impugn social justice (and, by extension, the basic bonds of the society whose benefits they enjoy) should be forcefully thrown from a very high cliff.
To their deaths, in case my intent wasn't clear.

i like the idea of all the worst and most incompetent people all getting together in one place. if this gets popular enough maybe online games will become somehow playable.

Hello. We've heard all the discussion today regarding the lack of diversity at Eurogamer and thank you for it. No excuses, we are not proud of it and will work harder to improve the range of voices on the site.— Oli Welsh (@oliwelsh) March 23, 2018

You can actually get quite far down the responses before someone asks for more political diversity.

This is interesting:http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2018/06/06/the-struggle-over-gamers-who-use-mods-to-create-racist-alternate-histories
Seems like devs and moderators are taking a considered approach (or perhaps not doing nearly enough about the problems?) given the weaponising of petty grievances into GG-related conspiracies, though the guy who just purged the Steam message board did a good job

Typical story these days, but I feel like Ben Kuchera deserves some credit for wading into the filth, clickbaiting the toxic manbabies to this story and engaging with/insulting them in the comments section. I don't know if it's actually worthwhile, but he's got more courage than I do.

i dont see how it is courageous to defend Star Wars, Rick and Morty, and "videogames", all massively popular media properties that your employer covers daily. it's kind of getting old. how many stories do we need on the tiny minority of MRA people. do we really need to hear their input on every topic? what is gained from scapegoating them in lieu of actually looking at the content of these properties and why these types of people may be drawn to it in the first place?
these are giant global brands consumed by millions of people, no doubt there are always going to be some lunatics among them. it is annoying to constantly be hearing about the most extreme horrible fans, as if it nullifies anything else wrong with these movies or tv shows.
― Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 14 June 2018 17:06 (eight years ago)
this is just giving them a platform. if someone is trolling a celebrity for lolz then having a website write them up is only going to make them want to do it more.
