i shelved zelda for mario, doing the same for steamworld dig now, think i'll continue pushing it back for xenoblade and will finally get into it in a real way this summer
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 1 December 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)
I'm playing XC2 rather than finishing Zelda so I guess I get excommunicated
― ciderpress, Friday, 1 December 2017 16:12 (eight years ago)
Zelda is great but also not the type of game that begs completion. it's just a place to spend your time in.I felt the same way about Skyrim too iirc
― ciderpress, Friday, 1 December 2017 16:14 (eight years ago)
Zelda is nice but im going to really take your time w this one and play it over a year just picking it up every now and then and exploring the huge world. ive defeated one Divine Beast and am at the second.
i just started a new game of Mario cos its cool to see the unique cutscenes also now that i've beaten the game i can use all the cool moves i have learned. there is a triple jump i just figured out. you do a long jump, throw your hat, do another long jump in midair onto the hat, then bounce off the hat and make a third jump. its kind of difficult for me to get the button pressings right but it's a pretty cool trick you can use everywhere. this move works especially well over large height/width gaps like jumping buildings.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 1 December 2017 17:23 (eight years ago)
I also didnt learn that until after "beating the game"
― crocus bulbotuber (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 1 December 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)
The speed runners string those jumps together endlessly to skip huge portions.

Ciderpress I am on that exact scene right now
― .oO (silby), Saturday, 2 December 2017 03:19 (eight years ago)
giving the catgirl character an adult Welsh lady voice somehow turned out extremely good
― ciderpress, Saturday, 2 December 2017 05:44 (eight years ago)
you know what happens when the meaty carrot gets together with the hot oranges
the kotaku review of XC2 is so whiny it makes it seem like a must buy
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 3 December 2017 01:38 (eight years ago)
I’m digging it
― .oO (silby), Sunday, 3 December 2017 02:05 (eight years ago)
digging the meaty carrots?
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 3 December 2017 02:08 (eight years ago)
XC2 is a wonderful mess of a game so far, i love it. it's so weird to see nintendo's name front and center on this though since it definitely doesn't have the nintendo polish or the nintendo aesthetics.
13 hours in i think i'm about to hit the big 'shit gets real now' cutscene but i'm stuck on the boss battle before it in true JRPG fashion
― ciderpress, Sunday, 3 December 2017 06:03 (eight years ago)
im in chapter 4 now and the game is starting to get horny
― ciderpress, Monday, 4 December 2017 14:41 (eight years ago)
Y’all playing with English or Japanese voice acting? I watched Tim Rogers’ kotaku video (which was generally more positive than their text review) and the repetitive battle cries alone would drive me absolutely nuts. But hearing that in another language would make it a little easier to take.
― Karl Malone, Monday, 4 December 2017 15:40 (eight years ago)
Obsessed by XC2 to no great surprise as I'm one of the few that liked both XC and XCX. Took ages for the battle system to become interesting tho. Playing with JP subtitles, mainly due to lipflaps and easier to listen to as noted above. Only got one rare blade out of 20+ cores so far, if I had to pay for this gatcha bullshit I'd be fuming!
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 4 December 2017 15:49 (eight years ago)
I’m playing in English because my sword girlfriend has this great Millennial American vocal fry voice that I find very comforting.
― .oO (silby), Monday, 4 December 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)
not to harp on the already boring "Pyra boobs make this game unforgiveable" topic any more - but it was hilarious that her second or third line in the game is "Put your hand on my chest".
3 hours in and having a lot of fun, but that combat system is hilariously complicated
― jamiesummerz, Monday, 4 December 2017 16:26 (eight years ago)
I'm playing with English voices because they're mostly good outside of the battles and you can turn those down or off. there's been some scenes that sound phoned in but they mostly nail it in the critical bits. I was skeptical of Pyra's voice actor for the first few chapters and then she completely sold me on it after a certain thing happens at the end of chapter 3.

still waiting for amazong to get this here. do you guys do digital download? I still want to have the physical item so i can resell/regift.
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 4 December 2017 18:05 (eight years ago)
and also because irritated Welsh catgirl is far better than her Japanese voice
― ciderpress, Monday, 4 December 2017 18:06 (eight years ago)
I do digital for everything because I live in a tiny room and am willing to pay extra to not have another physical possession
― ciderpress, Monday, 4 December 2017 18:08 (eight years ago)
I've been going physical to save internal storage for indie games and stave off my inevitable purchase of a microSD card, and also just because.
― .oO (silby), Monday, 4 December 2017 18:31 (eight years ago)
I got a nice little plastic game card wallet that will hold 24 carts in a pleasing durable rectangle, saves time shuffling the actual cases around
coincidentally, i am also living in a pleasing durable rectangle

"wonderful mess" about covers this so far; i'll give it a few more days but the script and (human) character design is SO bad. thank god for japanese voice option so i don't have to hear these guys talk.
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)
huh, I like all the human characters and still like the English VA for the main crew, just not the nopons who are obnoxious
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 20:08 (eight years ago)
the game has been way more than the sum of its parts for me to the point where I don't really want to dissect it for fear of breaking the spell
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 20:18 (eight years ago)
Yeah it doesn’t work on paper but I’m having loads of fun.
― .oO (silby), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 20:32 (eight years ago)
Bayonetta 1/2/3(!) coming next year
― thos beads (jamescobo), Friday, 8 December 2017 04:18 (eight years ago)
so psyched! all i need now is a Wonderful 101 port
― Nhex, Friday, 8 December 2017 06:16 (eight years ago)
got one of these this week. apart from some wacky interference which seems to fuck up everything bluetooth (and i have nfi where it's coming from – i've bought a wired controller because i can't be doing with this shit), it's one hell of a feat of engineering. already i'm playing it more than i thought i would.
mario is impressive but the camera seems far worse than any game sice mario 64. i've only got started with zelda and am hopelessly lost but that's fine. when skyrim drops in price i'll finally get to play it more than the <10 hours i gave it on my ps3/360 (honestly can't remember which it was) copy (being portable is the reason to buy skyrim twice imo).
― rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 8 December 2017 09:32 (eight years ago)
I'm thinking of getting one of these too. The iOS game market has really gone to crap, it seems to me, and ambitious developers who want to get paid can go switch instead now. thinking of getting Zelda, Arms, and Mario to start with; the kids may demand Mario Kart, we'll see. We'll go from there.
― droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 8 December 2017 14:55 (eight years ago)
I can confirm that XC2 goes all the way down the insane JRPG story rabbit hole in the second half. the writing never stops being corny anime though
― ciderpress, Friday, 8 December 2017 15:08 (eight years ago)
sold
― El Tomboto, Friday, 8 December 2017 15:13 (eight years ago)
ok, I've got my heavy hitter cartridges, what download or indie games should I consider? keep hearing binding of Isaac, cave story ... what else?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 December 2017 15:34 (eight years ago)
Stardew Valley, Thumper, Tumbleseed. Crawl is a good local multiplayer game that comes to Switch next week.
― .oO (silby), Friday, 8 December 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)
re: XC2 i'm still really enjoying it though the current chapter I'm on is rough since the character I was most accustomed to playing is currently unavailable for story reasons right at the same time as a bit of a difficulty spike. I've had to go grind side quests for the first time and the side quests in this game are mostly mmo-level busywork. don't neglect your secondary options in jrpgs is the lesson here.
the music continues to be great even for the high standards of the xeno series. some very nice sounding choral bgm in 2 of the later cities
― ciderpress, Friday, 8 December 2017 16:01 (eight years ago)
How is SteamWorld Dig 2? Looks cool.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 December 2017 17:37 (eight years ago)
ok I just ordered one of these. how important is it to get a pro controller?
― droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 8 December 2017 17:42 (eight years ago)
steamworld2 and golf story are recommended
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 8 December 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)
steamworld dig 2 is excellent if you like Metroid style platformers
Pro controller was essential for me because I have giant hands and was cramping up using the joycon grip, give the grip a try first though if you're not in the same boat
― ciderpress, Friday, 8 December 2017 18:42 (eight years ago)
that's what people mean by metroidvania, right? scrolling platforms?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 December 2017 18:50 (eight years ago)
+ upgrading abilities leading to backtracking to earlier sections of the game to visit new opened up areas that were previously inaccessible (e.g.., there was a tunnel high up on the wall on the first screen, but now that you've unlocked triple-jump you can finally reach it)
― Karl Malone, Friday, 8 December 2017 18:53 (eight years ago)
so og Zelda, too?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 December 2017 19:31 (eight years ago)
metroidvanias are necessarily side scrollers
