No, but you're in for a very very good experience.

if i were to invest in some KOTOR for the 360, should i get the first or second game?
― someone went oddjob in yer goldeneye (stevie), Sunday, 17 May 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link
this game was so amazing. are there KOTOR on the 360? new ones?
at the end of KOTOR2 I was so evil and so fucking stubborn that the game ending was the entire universe imploding...it was the best end to a game ever, it gave me about 12 chances not to let that happen.
― Local Garda, Thursday, 21 May 2009 03:12 (fifteen years ago) link
ok, I'm playing KOTOR1 right now - didnt read the thread cuz i dont want either of the games spoiled for me, but this is AMAZING. i'm going darkside for my first playthrough (which i'm realizing may have been a mistake), and i just got to the part where i actually switched sides. i forced the Wookiee to murder Mission - easily the sickest (as in most grotesque) gaming moment i've ever experienced. this game is bananas!!!!!!!!!

my enthusiasm was pretty tempered after trudging thru the final boss last night - this game has serious design flaws, especially when it comes to build viability (ie. wasted points will really cost u down the line) - but i still liked it enough to start a new game, this time a light side play thru~

I loved KOTOR and own 2 also, but enough people told me 2 was badly broken that I've never played it. Is that nonsense? I've no shortage of games to play, so if 2 kinda sucks then I'll continue to stay away.
― Sugar Slam (Euler), Monday, 27 July 2009 14:42 (fourteen years ago) link
starting with 1, will move onto 2 if i love it

How is 2 badly broken? guh
I love these games a lot even though I never even scratched the surface re: companion influence; none of my characters ever became Jedi.

I've heard from a friend that the ending is so badly executed that the entire game is not worth playing. I hope that's wrong, b/c I'd love to try it some time.
― Sugar Slam (Euler), Monday, 27 July 2009 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link
1 owns pretty hard, it's a pretty smart game, reminds me a lil of deus ex... not so much in the gameplay unfortunately, but writing-wise (deus ex is infinitely superior just as an RPG, nevermind the whole host of other things it does amazingly well). i like the way the star wars galaxy is basically depicted as a giant third world shithole filled with brutality and exploitation. it's very obviously meant to parallel real world environments like, say, colombia where violence scars the lives of everyday ppl, and in a way that seems much more specific and intentional than in most games featuring generic corrupt/wartorn shithole [x]
things that make u say ~*~*hmmmm*~*~

fuck the swoop races though; I wasted a bunch of time trying to beat the last one of them, and when I finally did, my reward was an RL trip to an eye doctor for eye strain.

the last boss is a real son of a bitch if you dont have exactly the right build though... i had like the worst possible combination of skills and feats for that fight (low treat wounds, low force resistance, completely wrong set of force powers, etc)

playin KOTOR 2 now - boy do i hate how this starts! the characters are horrible and right off the bat you have to slog through this gigantic dungeon that's bigger than any from the first game. the influence system seems interesting tho...

mass effect blew chunks according to everyone i know
not really diggin KOTOR 2 btw - it just feels kinda cheap and crappy compared to the first game
― a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Sunday, 9 August 2009 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link
-the level design is awful - all samey cramped corridors no matter what the locale (except dantooine thusfar, and it's literally just the same environment from the first game with a lil gussying up)-the characters are borrrring and unlikeable (so far none of them own as hard as Jolee or Canderous)-it's pretty buggy and incomplete
the whole thing feels like half-a-game, like something the publishers rushed out the door to meet an arbitrary deadline (which is probably exactly what happened)
― a narwhal done gored my sister nell (cankles), Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:21 (fourteen years ago) link
KOTOR 2 is totally a rush job - publisher wanted it out regardless. Just wait until you get to the end! However, I think the character interaction is better, though the character's themselves aren't as interesting.
― EZ Snappin, Sunday, 9 August 2009 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm super excited about this, never got round to starting it (despite owning it for years and LOVING the first game) just because talk of bugginess and unfinishedness always put me off. So I'm set to jump right into it fresh.

Same here - I think I did finish it, but I can always do so again, and they aren't kidding about how desultory a lot of the ending is.

but i think this game is a failure tbh and can only really be appreciated as an autopsy. it's not, or not just, that it's unfinished-- the Restored Content Mod renders the plot and most of the character arcs complete if still obscure; and these days it runs much stabler than kotor1. (haven't played the recent rerelease but presumably that works too.) but the more you understand what it's trying to do-- link the story's themes of teachers/students/choices to the practice of a padawan-rearing CYOA-- the more you feel compelled to plan the narrative development of your character far in advance, exactly as if it were a mechanical "build".
the game wants you to stumble naturally across triggers in the plot and environments that develop, not just your character, but the (many!) characters in your party. this is normal enough and now in fact an obsidian cliche, but unlike fallout new vegas or the pillars games or the (not good) the outer worlds, your relationship w your companions is the primary theme of the game's plot and the source of most of its content; the triggers that shape them are unevenly scattered and easy to miss or lock; and reaching the end of the main plot without having properly developed your companions leaves you w a very strange feeling that you have been told a story that had a point which has been removed. so you play it again and this time you know what you're doing, and suddenly the game is about cycling people in and out of your party in order to get the game to tell you the version of its story you have decided you want to hear. instead of being a kind of narrative space you freely explore while listening to lectures about freely exploring narrative space, the game is at first almost impossible to appreciate and then on replay responds to appreciation by becoming a game where you are always taking arbitrary actions in the service of picking plot components like feats. meanwhile you are listening to lectures. (stand by my spoilery assessment of kreia above-- an extremely cleverly designed NPC-- but the circuitous bull-session avellone dialogue style where everyone says "perhaps" 9000 times a conversation is tested to its v limits w her.)
a noble failure tho, which would be still be better than kotor1 if its environments weren't so denuded and hasty. as it is they're both huge wastes of time lol
