The Nintendo Switch

hey I got one of these finally! so far I love it to death; I got MK8 (I had the WiiU version but I am 100% willing to double dip at full price to be able to play it on the go and with a decent battle mode), Sonic Mania (rules a lot), Zelda (rules a LOT, although I'm looking ), and BoI+ (rules a lot, although buying it for the third time for that much money was not a thing which I appreciated) and I've been playing the ARMS free trial since I got home from work.

it's a gooseneck tablet mount which happens to fit the Switch perfectly, which means you can mount your Switch in handheld mode over your face and play with the pro controller while lying in bed. so, yeah.

have played 50 hours of Splatoon 2 now and still have barely touched zelda, not at all how I expected to use this console when I got it

I've played the training missions, had a wee explore and done another couple of missions. Enjoying it so far, despite there not being much challenge yet but I'm only like an hour or so in, so that shouldn't be surprising. It borrows the odd "throw your team mates to move farther" move from Chroma Squad (and probably others), which I could never really be bothered using - wonder if I can get away without it. I also have some loot! But haven't figured out how/where to use or equip new gear...

invisibility is for perverts and thieves. AGAIN Pearl is the way to go.

i also just learned about upcoming indie game Yoku's Island Express which is a pinball metroidvania, surely one of the last remaining Good Ideas in gaming

there's a Direct sort of thing for indie games on Switch in a couple of hours time, hopefully a Stardew Valley date & some surprises incoming. seems like that Advance Wars type game has been delayed till next year though boo.

also in ball-related indie games, Golf Story is out next month. looks like it's trying to claim the lineage of the gameboy mario golf games (totally classic if you haven't played them) but playing up the RPG element even more

mario golf for gameboy color was a perfect golf video game imo - i think its probably in my top 5 games lifetime in # of hours played

there also hasn't been a perfect (or even good?) non-sim baseball game in years and years

i really liked super mega baseball

oh yeah, i got really into that for a while too

ok maybe i will emulate this golf experience

i dunno if it holds up but at the time it was revelatory - a golf game with a bit of actual story/progression and the mechanics were really good for a gameboy game

it's barely even a mario game, it feels like they were making their own golf game and then the mario license fell in their lap somehow and they worked it in. mario doesn't even appear until 80% of the way through the game iirc.

yeah i feel like the sweet spot wld be really good mechanics not too technical in terms of club selection etc and a lot of variation in course design

look keep your talk of 'sweet spots' and 'working it in' out of this family-friendly thread pls

Virtua Tennis on Dreamcast was pretty great.

only 3/4 sarcastically, my recommendation is desert golf

desert golfing is good but its not golf, its desert golfing

i still feel like it somehow nails the mysterious essence of golfing, like when you hit the ball 100 ft past the hole, it bounces onto a backward sloped ridge, careens off of a 50 foot high hoodoo, then slowly rolls into the hole just feet away from an infinite cliff.

see wii sports was so in the right direction but then the actual mechanics were so weirdly like binary and translated instead of being an accurate depiction of what u did w the remote, u cld hit a normal shot or WOW a super shot there were really like five total things u cld do

desert golf is good true

i remember the moment i completely stopped with desert golf. it was abrupt and clear.

ok i reached invisibility king, did my part for the team. i'm really enjoying the splash-o-matic and have no idea why you have to wait until level 25 to get it when its basically just a variant of the gun you get at level 1.
