this nightmarish discovery is going to fuck up my youtube recommendations for years to come isn't it
In the words of Boltair is incredible, i didn't skip a beat and assumed this had to be either a video game character (maybe a Transformer?) and/or an alt-right Pepe Twitter person, hero of the continuing Gamergate underground survivors, named after such a character

The Guild Wars community (air quotes) just harassed a female developer (and a male developer who stood up for her) out of a job for being uppity enough to call out what she felt was a gender-related microaggression.
Here is the completely unremarkable exchange that sparked the shitstorm:
Today in being a female game dev:"Allow me--a person who does not work with you--explain to you how you do your job." https://t.co/lmK0yJWqGB— Jessica Price (@Delafina777) July 4, 2018
The gamers cried, a lot: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/8w3q4n/must_be_a_thrill_to_work_with_this_dev/?st=jj9bes2e&sh=7f012da4
The company that makes the game rolled over: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/comment/586426#Comment_586426
I don't play this game, just noticed a link related to it. This kind of thing probably happens so often that it's become unremarkable.
― Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 01:46 (seven years ago)
I play a lot of video games--too much, honestly, more than I want to--and I have since I was like 5 years old, and I think it is fucking creepy that "gamer" has become something that can form the core of a person's identity. Gamer culture, such as it is, is fucking fascistic.
― Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 01:50 (seven years ago)
I dunno. Read through all that and it seems to me like the dev freaked out on him for seemingly no reason. He wasn't being an asshole to her in his reply. And while the shitstorm did bring out a few pretty unfortunate gamergate stereotypes, most replies were just criticizing her for being rude to him instead of engaging in conversation with his points like a normal person would.
― how's life, Friday, 6 July 2018 12:19 (seven years ago)
Being rude to a customer should definitely get you and your friends fired, every time Who the fuck still plays Guild Wars
― El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 13:00 (seven years ago)
Fair enough, I guess. Just seems like the entire episode would have passed completely unremarked upon if it was a prickly dude who was the dev (think Linus). Instead, thousands of users immediately rallied around the very important cause of getting this woman fired
― Dan I., Friday, 6 July 2018 14:24 (seven years ago)
I was being sarcastic People who self-identify as “gamers” would appear to be the thinnest-skinned dipshits aliveI only follow army vets and lesbians on Twitch
― El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:30 (seven years ago)
most replies were just criticizing her for being rude to him
The problem even with these replies is that the cumulative effect is basically a mob. I can understand someone's impulse on seeing that exchange to want to defend Deroir, but when thousands of people have that same impulse, you end up with a pile-on which is totally out of proportion to the original exchange. I also don't see many people on those threads arguing for the response to be scaled back from 'fire them now!'
― jmm, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:43 (seven years ago)
I don’t understand the impulse to defend him at all. He’s a fucking overprivileged adult, he can handle himself. It’s all pathetic.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 14:56 (seven years ago)
Man, I just don't see where he's being over-privileged. He just made a normal-ass, inquisitive response to her (heretofore very thoughtful) run of tweets and for some reason she basically accuses him of mansplaining, subsequently calling him an asshat. He did nothing wrong. She started off wrong and then doubled down.
But I'll stay out of it. I'm not a gamer and I only saw this thread bc we can't choose what boards go on SNA on the mobile app lol.
I also don't see many people on those threads arguing for the response to be scaled back from 'fire them now!'
Didn't see any tweets of that nature, but there were definitely some in the message board thread.

I mean the guy seems like he doesn't have a lot to worry about
― El Tomboto, Friday, 6 July 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)
in a vacuum these sort of things might look overblown but in the context of the games industry since 2014 there's more to it
― ciderpress, Friday, 6 July 2018 20:56 (seven years ago)
The whole gamergate thing had an element of wanting to consider gaming to be an artform but then refusing to allow it to be critiqued, and campaigning against anyone (or any woman) who dared to do that. Seems like their criticism of her is basically the same, except this time a woman is on the other side of the equation, so they've switched sides too. Maybe that's all that matters.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 6 July 2018 21:11 (seven years ago)
Basically they want their AAA games to be accorded universal respect.
this is particularly sad because the voice acting and stories in AAA games are generally on the level of a pretty good high school production
― Karl Malone, Monday, 9 July 2018 16:01 (seven years ago)
It's not just disagreeing, it's disagreeing with her about how she should do her job. It's the lack of respect for her credentials and experience. And when it happens each and every day, you're bound to lose your head every now and then.
the idea that he shouldn't express disagreement with her about game design because she's a professional game designer and he's just some guy who plays games seems silly to me - of course laypeople can have opinions about computer games, it's not like they're talking about string theory or something
― soref, Monday, 9 July 2018 16:51 (seven years ago)

he was disagreeing on a design point. like you should be able to critique creative decisions even if you are not a designer/filmmaker/musician/whatever, we do it all the time. and with stuff like game development, as shitty as some of it is, processing community feedback is part of the gig. i just don't get any whiff of condescension there, guy (regardless of quality of his take) seemed to just want to have a discussion.

...others argued that terms like “gay” and “fag” evolved online. People claim that because the terms are used so often online, and supposedly without any malice, then our own understanding of how these words should be able to change. This argues kids who grow up on the internet, and see words like “gay” and “fag” slung around as casual supplements for words like stupid, frustrating, or annoying, wouldn’t think twice about using a slur because it’s not how the word was introduced into their vocabulary.
