slightly torn on Switch but leaning no, or waiting until the holiday season.
as said above Mario and Zelda look great but do I want to pay $300+60+60 for 2 games
not to mention the accessories/extra controllers you need (def would get a Pro controller, another $70-80)
and Scorpio comes out in the winter. never got an XB1 so that's tempting (plus backwards compat on that one i think?)

yeah basically, the gap between this console gen and the previous has never felt justified in terms of advancing tech, and the fidelity of TV images is probably exceeding the capacity of human eyes to process that shit anyway
no way. playing PC games again reminded me how much better things can always get, and we're not even at max fidelity smooth 60 FPS / 1080p play on consoles, yet let alone 4K. ppl can definitely still be blown away by visuals, but the endless armyman shooty FPS/sports games that are used to demo these things lack the creativity

I think the killer app for VR is concerts/sporting events.

DJI, Friday, 13 January 2017 19:36 (nine years ago)

"Blown away by visuals" is at best orthogonal to "enjoying playing this game", though.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 13 January 2017 19:37 (nine years ago)

the mario preview just makes me think of sonic adventure

ciderpress, Friday, 13 January 2017 19:39 (nine years ago)

Was trying to think about what the hardware team is doing now. Normally I'd assume they devote time to finishing up the next DS thing, but then I realized they just did that.

So what's the next Nintendo portable: a little all-in-one Switch with better battery life?

The beaver is not the bad guy (El Tomboto), Friday, 13 January 2017 21:50 (nine years ago)

oh i'm sure, especially as components get cheaper they'll keep making new ones. hell DS/3DS got how many different versions? felt like one almost every year

Nhex, Friday, 13 January 2017 21:53 (nine years ago)

They just sort of made the new portable, is my point. The product lines have converged.

https://media.giphy.com/media/3ohfFmccsVpGkoIwZq/giphy.gif

this looks sick.

if they aren't making games for a separate portable console then that is good news! it would double the software available on Nintendo machines! all those remasters and cool things like Zelda a Link Between Worlds that came out on 3ds can now be produced for this HD console/portable hybrid.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 03:57 (nine years ago)

are they really gonna kill the 3DS? i thought that was successful

Nhex, Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:01 (nine years ago)

now i can't stop thinking about combining the game mechanics of mario 64 and tony hawk's pro skater

ciderpress, Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:01 (nine years ago)

3DS is super successful. it did come out 6 years ago tho!

i wonder how far they will go with the tablet functionality. it uses the same kind of touch screen as iPhone, so maybe you will be able to play your iPhone games and apps over your Switch? is Apple close at all with Sony or Microsoft? lol wait forget i asked about Microsoft.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:15 (nine years ago)

Switch uses a capacitive touchscreen - like a modern phone, allowing for gliding motions and light touch - whereas the Wii U had a resistive, pressure-sensitive touchscreen, requiring the use of a stylus. this is a good sign.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:19 (nine years ago)

this system will always be the Nintendo NX to me

Karl Malone, Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:23 (nine years ago)

I didn't say kill the goddamn 3DS you infuriating morons

I just meant if you're the chief of new hardware design at Nintendo, are you working on a new handheld cartridge-based console right now? Not likely, you just made one!

mario makes that look really easy but what he's doing there is actually really hard to pull off

Karl Malone, Saturday, 14 January 2017 05:25 (nine years ago)

I'm extremely impressed by the hardware but they really should have shown us more games considering the Wii U drought. Just show me two seconds of a Kirby thing at least.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 14 January 2017 05:53 (nine years ago)

Mario is the greatest parkourer in the world.

And you could not convince me that the sport wasn't inspired by 2D platformers of which SMB is the undisputed granddaddy so your statement is entirely true

the hardware seems to be reviewing very well, the rumble in particular which I was v sceptical about

man, ever see a 120 star super mario 64 speedrun? that shit is parkour out the wazoo

unfortunately this isn't coming until the end of the year. zelda and some of the other games don't look quite as exciting

plus I'm pretty sure people are gonna get seriously injured thanks to these things. someone's gonna hit a well and fall awkwardly since they have no semblance of where they are. or step on a child or a dog or something. god forbid.

― frogbs, Friday, 13 January 2017 19:23

This sounds like a scary possibility. I bet Nintendo would be reluctant to go the VR route for these reasons.

I've seen clips of a Switch game that looks like a Japanese historical fantasy thing, anyone know what it is?

I'm surprised by the high prices. When the console was announced they were saying it was created mainly for the Chinese market whose gamers mostly can't afford regular consoles. So they could dominate the Chinese market. Didn't they also make out it wasn't supposed to be considered their next big console? Maybe they ditched all these plans?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 14 January 2017 16:58 (nine years ago)

Really don't like the look of Mario in a realistic city with regular shaped people. Booooo.

Mario Galaxy 2 was amazing.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:02 (nine years ago)

Mario in a city does look a bit Sonic Adventure. But other than that, the game looks great.

Frederik B, Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:21 (nine years ago)

Japanese historical game is either Romance of 3 Kingdoms or Nobunaga's Ambition, both out on Japanese launch with no western dates yet.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:28 (nine years ago)

But no regions!

I just realized I might be able to get a Super Robot Wars title on this thing that's worth playing. Please?

...

Alternatively, the lack of region lock might mean very little 3rd party IP wherever international rights are messy.

The beaver is not the bad guy (El Tomboto), Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:48 (nine years ago)

i like Mario in the real world. in 10 years they will have a holographic AR Mario who does parkour around your house, this is the first step.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:49 (nine years ago)

Reminds me too much of Grand Theft Auto.

When the talk was on the Chinese market I saw the Chinese gaming censorship rules and I can't remember them but it was a little worrying that all sorts of developers might change their games to fall within the rules. It's not just sex and violence, it had a lot of implications. Maybe it's over-paranoid to say there might be no more super-camp characters in Zelda.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 14 January 2017 17:56 (nine years ago)

have you seen the new trailer for BOTW? some very campy looking characters briefly shown in that.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 18:05 (nine years ago)

wtf am i reading this right? Nintendo Switch's bundled Joy-Con grip doesn't charge controllers

you need to spend an extra £28 to play the switch on your tv and charge your controller at the same time?

hunk of poo, big fart, girlfriend, and Dove soap (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 16 January 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)

although i guess i shouldn't be that surprised since nintendo stopped bundling any kind of charger at all with the 3ds a few years ago

hunk of poo, big fart, girlfriend, and Dove soap (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 16 January 2017 15:24 (nine years ago)

so if you buy a switch, an extra joycon and for the sake of economy just one charging grip you'll be spending the better part of £400 before even buying a game to play on it

yikes

hunk of poo, big fart, girlfriend, and Dove soap (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 16 January 2017 15:28 (nine years ago)

I'd be stunned if the Mario game wound up anything short of incredible

frogbs, Monday, 16 January 2017 15:36 (nine years ago)

it's nintendo, of course it's going to be great

hunk of poo, big fart, girlfriend, and Dove soap (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 16 January 2017 15:48 (nine years ago)

for the record I thought the "Sonic in the city" bits of SA were the best parts of the game. would be nice to see something really expansive again - while I do like it when games guide you a bit to prevent you from getting lost, Galaxy sort of forced it a bit; most of the game was "do this, then go here, then do this", almost no wide open spaces like what Sunshine had. not that Galaxy wasn't excellent though

frogbs, Monday, 16 January 2017 15:59 (nine years ago)

gritty open world mario reboot imo
