you've just changed my life. the biggest impediment to ps4 gaming is that my kids are always using the tv.

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:32 (nine years ago)

Changed title to just 'The Nintendo Switch', lmk if you want a ref to the NX in there still.

mod, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:34 (nine years ago)

for some reason i didn't know you could remote play outside the vita, this is good info. @mordy, from my experience doing this on the Xbox it's an awesome feature of the current gen that i wouldn't give for anything. it's rad to know everyone is proceeding on the assumption that portability is a necessary feature

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:38 (nine years ago)

Mordy, the vita really does the trick well ime

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:40 (nine years ago)

it works well for some games for sure, but if you need the r2/l2 buttons regularly it's kind of a chore ime

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

some games also seem to have developed better control schemes for working w vita than others so it may be a game by game basis kind of thing

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

but do i need the vita if i use this software? i think i'd prefer to play on my big macbook retina screen anyway

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)

nah, macbook will likely work better for you if you're a laptop in bed kinda guy

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:45 (nine years ago)

you will probably become that guy, given the opportunity

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:48 (nine years ago)

ipad / home office / no children have thus far led to me not being that guy but life is long

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:54 (nine years ago)

so does remote play only work over the wi-fi or could i set it up to access from anywhere?

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 20:32 (nine years ago)

On the PS4? Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can remote play over the internet if you're away from home. The PS4 has to be in standby with the 'wake for network activity' (or whatever it's called) enabled, so you can wake it with the remote play request.

CraigG, Thursday, 20 October 2016 21:43 (nine years ago)

So the list of commitments for 3rd party support is already awesome. I cannot wait to play a new DQ on this. And Terraria! I bet they'll have Terraria for this. I'm going to have to buy a headset thingy with the microphone and everything.

El Tomboto, Friday, 21 October 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

My daughter is going to be the perfect age for this when it comes out. Dudes. 2017 is going to be the best.

El Tomboto, Friday, 21 October 2016 01:59 (nine years ago)

can't believe your daughter is 27 and bbqing on a rooftop

mh 😏, Friday, 21 October 2016 02:24 (nine years ago)

badump switch

El Tomboto, Friday, 21 October 2016 02:28 (nine years ago)

i clearly have to hurry up and make a child to get ready for this

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Friday, 21 October 2016 03:25 (nine years ago)

Our Wii U (with Kart and Smash Bros) sits idle while my 9-year-olds play Geometry Dash and slither.io on the tablets. IDGI.

Remote Play is good but will drag ass if ppl are streaming video. I would still get one anyway in your situation though as the Vita has tons of games worthy of your attention.

re: the Switch, the fact that it's not going to be BC with any previous games is making me want to hold off from buying at launch. REALLY hoping they don't make me rebuy all the digital shit I've bought over the years, although previous efforts on Nintendo's part in this regard are not encouraging.

thos beads (jamescobo), Sunday, 23 October 2016 02:16 (nine years ago)

They will absolutely make us rebuy it, and we will, because we are weak.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Sunday, 23 October 2016 02:39 (nine years ago)

It totally makes me feel great about my decision to have not bothered with any Nintendo digital shit since 2007 or so!

El Tomboto, Sunday, 23 October 2016 04:27 (nine years ago)

Their digital system has been garbage for a long time, was hoping for this system they'd finally implement multi-system buys like Steam/XBL/PSN.
No backwards compatibility makes me sad as well and makes this a lot of less of a slam dunk for me. Probably gonna be a year or two before whatever version of Smash Bros comes out anyway....

Nhex, Sunday, 23 October 2016 05:28 (nine years ago)

I think it's odd and promising that this is such a straight games machine, first time in a long time (since Gamecube?) that nintendo have done that. Sure, portability is the headline, but there's no motion control, no second screen, no 3d, nothing really to set it apart from ps4 or xbox one in terms of core functionality. Upsides of that are that it'll no doubt mean a lot more 3rd party interest, and will hopefully mean more first party games that really focus on gameplay and not gimmicks.

But yeah, lack of back compatibility is inevitable for that reason - can't recreate wii u or wii or DS games on this.

JimD, Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:14 (nine years ago)

The carts used for this are different size than the 3DS ones and obviously no disc drive so clearly no backwards compatibility. I think going forward it's not unlikely that iterations like the PS4 Pro and Xbone Scorpio could be standard and that the Switch will introduce a universal Nintendo operating system where your account and purchased content wlil stay with you in future generations.

abcfsk, Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:30 (nine years ago)

I'm amped. I've skipped a console generation since 64. Wild how appx. 10 years is always the right time for me to get excited about video games

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:23 (nine years ago)

What would be sick is if they included free cellular connectivity for network gaming.

schwantz, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:57 (nine years ago)

do you think they'll make a version of twilight princess HD for this thing?

El Tomboto, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:59 (nine years ago)

pretty sure that even in strung-out Nintendo reality we're at least three generations past Nintendo 64, unless you mean you've only skipped one since then

mh 😏, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:29 (nine years ago)

never mind, you mean every other console, gotcha

mh 😏, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:30 (nine years ago)

N64 is 20 years old as of like a month ago

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:31 (nine years ago)

assuming wgw means n64 - wiii - this new thing

Probably not but usually Nintendo systems are backwards compatible with whatever the console prior was.

Evan, Monday, 24 October 2016 15:10 (nine years ago)

...therefore if that holds true you'd be able to play TP HD for Wii U on it

Evan, Monday, 24 October 2016 15:11 (nine years ago)

this uses cartridges so its not gonna be backwards compatible with wii games at least not in disc format - it'd have to be as a digital download

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 16:02 (nine years ago)

Oh right! I forgot about that. Hmm. Maybe downloads will be more of a thing for back catalog stuff. Imagine something like Steam for Nintendo titles. That'd be neat.

new board description

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Tuesday, 25 October 2016 14:19 (nine years ago)

They are doing a global livestream on January 12th which "will include the launch date and pricing for Nintendo Switch, as well as a look at the lineup of games currently in development" according to the PR. 2 months before launch seems a bit short, but I guess it doesn't make sense to do it before the holiday season?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 27 October 2016 01:58 (nine years ago)

if I had to guess, the new hardware platform is going to make porting easier than it's been previously and they're being optimistic about a broad range of release titles but are scheduling it at the QA cutoff for launch

mh 😏, Thursday, 27 October 2016 02:32 (nine years ago)

All this thing has to do is give my little girl a great way to get introduced to DQ and FF and Zelda games where she can hand off the controller to Dad when stuff gets too hard. And then make me look good when I beat the hard parts (I realize that's probably more on me than the console). That's all I want. A thing that isn't homework that I can do with her for a few years before she decides/realizes that pops is a gross jerk with no style. I'm probably putting too much karma into this, but you gotta have dreams.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 27 October 2016 03:09 (nine years ago)

one month passes...

huge patent dump yesterday showing all the features of the Switch, this video is a bit dry but does a good job going through all the features

that guy's got an... interesting idiolect

  • touch screen
  • motion sensing (accelerometers / inclinometers in the unit & controllers)
  • 4 shoulder buttons (L+R for joycon separates)
  • "record" button
  • infrared + NFC (so the joycon also does touch/motion stuff, of course)
  • USB Type C
  • 3 USB ports on the dock
  • different joycon layouts + accessories will be available, as suspected
  • VR attachment might be a thing

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Saturday, 17 December 2016 04:41 (nine years ago)

joycon not gonna catch on

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/12/nintendo-switch-nvidia-tegra-x1-specs-speed

Yeesh? I don't know how low of a price point they intend to hit but it strikes me as odd that they'd go for such low end specs (in 2016) when a low end iPad mini 2 seems to have similar clock speed with a much better display. I really don't understand modern specs, I guess?

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Thursday, 22 December 2016 21:28 (nine years ago)

don't think nintendo's made a console that had high end specs for its time since the n64
