agreed on dumb name, cool looking device. not sure about the detachable controller nubs but i like the rest

also why make a trailer where people are doing more fun things they would probably rather be doing than playing video games

also the DS had awesome 3rd party support, what you smoking. Even the 3DS's third-party support is way better than their consoles

DS and 3DS have great Japanese 3rd party support yes, not western. Because this is also a portable I believe they'll be able to retain Japanese 3rd party support, further differentiating their lineup from the competition.

xp yeah I think the standalone controller is basically the Pro controller like on the Wii/U

Just consolidating 1st party output to one device is pretty huge, hopefully this means more variety as they don't need to work on 2 Mario Kart games at once for example

pending further information, i am into this. third party support is good from an adoption/longevity pov, Nintendo standards on a powerful handheld is cool (especially if it's more comfortably designed than the wii u tablet)

As I previously reported in my September 2nd post, Nintendo Switch is 100% region free.

The people whose leaks have been most accurate e.g. Emily Rogers have been saying that it will be region free, and Iwata said on a few occasions that they were thinking about it. This console has got to have some big dumb thing wrong with it tho so it could be that :/

i was also surprised that apparently there's no touch-capability.

i haven't had a nintendo console since the wii (which i attempted to mod and ended up bricking within 2 years), but i'm not sure this is going to be the one.

the whole gimmick where you can transform it into a handheld and go off to the williamsburg party and play videogames on the rooftop at the bbq - that's kinda cool in theory but i know i would never do something like that. when i walk my dog in the early morning, i like to just sit on the bench and pay attention to her, i don't want to resume my dragon quest at that moment. and after getting beaten down IRL 2v2 basketball underneath a bustling highway, i know my bros aren't going to want to play nba 2k18 with me. they'll probably be mad at me for being bad at basketball irl, 15 minutes earlier. i don't play games on public transport either. i'm just not a handheld person, so i feel like the main purpose of the system design isn't aimed toward me.

kind of raisin' an eyebrow at the cartridge thing, although maybe these days cartridges can handle resource-intensive games? either way, i guess it has to be a cartridge so that you can Switch(tm) your game into mobile mode so you can level up while you're eating brunch and windsurfing in the afternoon.

whoooa, that came out way more negative than i meant it to be, sorry. i'm sure this will be a cool system and i will be jealous of all people getting to play the nintendo 1st party franchise sequels, for real.

solid state storage is fast in a way optical media will never be, and I get the impression that the Japanese market wouldn't be about a download-only platform. Also yeah carrying around an optical drive would work about as well as a discman.

(a discman that needed to stream textures to the GPU without skipping.)

idk i think the portability is actually pretty interesting/compelling. the best thing about the Xbox one right now is how it integrates into the windows 10 ecosystem. i can play it on my pc in my office, on my laptop in bed, or on the TV directly from the Xbox in the usual way. this limited portability is pretty awesome, and extending the possibility to take the game with you anywhere is a logical extension and seems pretty cool. yeh I play handhelds mostly at home, in bed etc. playing an Atlus game while cycling is on TV is my jam!

It will have a multi-touch screen. That's semi-confirmed (again from Emily Rogers' so far 100% correct fact sheet)

xp there's a windows 10 app that lets you stream games which is basically, as you say, a remote desktop thing. supposedly you can also set up your home router to allow you to access your Xbox from anywhere with internet but i haven't tried this

yeah if you could just go into a hotel or a friend's apartment & hook this up to play on the tv, w/o anything complex, that would be terrific.

you've just changed my life. the biggest impediment to ps4 gaming is that my kids are always using the tv.

for some reason i didn't know you could remote play outside the vita, this is good info. @mordy, from my experience doing this on the Xbox it's an awesome feature of the current gen that i wouldn't give for anything. it's rad to know everyone is proceeding on the assumption that portability is a necessary feature

it works well for some games for sure, but if you need the r2/l2 buttons regularly it's kind of a chore ime

some games also seem to have developed better control schemes for working w vita than others so it may be a game by game basis kind of thing

but do i need the vita if i use this software? i think i'd prefer to play on my big macbook retina screen anyway

nah, macbook will likely work better for you if you're a laptop in bed kinda guy

So I’ve been tasked with getting my 8 yr old kid some sort of gaming system for Xmas and I am completely clueless. X box and PlayStation 5 are like $500 which is too much. Thinking around $200 or so. We may move overseas so ideally it would not be reliant on the internet. He’s currently playing Apple Arcade and Minecraft so I dunno is the switch a good cheaper alternative?

you can get the portable only version the switch lite for 200, the regular one you can plug into the tv is 300, and yeah the switch is great its the best, has a lot of games good 4 kids too

Target has the regular switch for 225 with mario kart included. that's a good deal imo.

$225 is pretty dang good even without Mario Kart, though if you can wait another 6 months for the Switch 2... it might cost $400, so who knows.

yeh they usually have games like Kirby, Wario and remasters at the end of the generation, wonder if Metroid 4 is going to be crossgen or if they pushed it to 2

is there anything left from the WiiU that can be easily ported? there were those Windwaker/Twilight Princess HD remasters

yeah those have to be a lock, in the next year if not right now. the only other game people were generally positive on that hasnt been ported is yoshi's woolly world

xxp I'd be shocked if Metroid 4 is crossgen - it's the perfect genre and IP to show off the enhanced graphics and portable capabilities of the Switch 2. You also need some compelling games to launch with and Nintendo would have a couple bangers in play with a new Mario and Metroid. That said - BotW was crossgen so who knows.

ehh i think it'll still be a switch 1 game, metroid is one of nintendo's smaller series in terms of the number of units it moves, not really a system seller, they're gonna want that extra couple million switch 1 sales to justify the protracted development

Yeah, that sounds about right to me too, so many Switch 1 owners who would happily buy it and frankly I doubt there'll be some kind of killer NSW2 features... but who knows, maybe Nintendo finally gets their online stuff right

the new mouse will prob be used for new metroid since its a fps but im sure itll be playable without too

yep it was just shown in the switch 1 direct. maybe they'll show it again next week to demonstrate the switch 2's graphics capabilities though that's a very un-nintendo thing to focus on

Also, never having a Wii and being somewhat checked out on video games during that stretch, I either completely forgot or didn’t even know there was a Metroid Prime 3.

replayed metroid dread, real good game the movement is crisp and nice, i found it pretty easy this time tho i remembered it being kind of hard, one thing is it sort of betrays the metroid formula by effectively guiding you to your next intended destination, theres not actually a lot of backtracking or needing to find things if you just go the obvious way the game wants you to, its not totally obvious theyre doing it its well done which is nice it feels good to progress along, maybe i found it easier this time because i wasnt trying as hard just breezing along instead of looking all around, only annoying thing they basically make you fight three versions of the same boss in quick succession at the end of the game wonder if those were intended to be different guys but they ran out of time
