i am into this!

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:31 (nine years ago)

https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:32 (nine years ago)

so, hardware-wise it's a really neat nvidia shield?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (nine years ago)

what does the core system come with tho? How much extra shit are they requiring me to buy?

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (nine years ago)

agreed on dumb name, cool looking device. not sure about the detachable controller nubs but i like the rest

also why make a trailer where people are doing more fun things they would probably rather be doing than playing video games

also the DS had awesome 3rd party support, what you smoking. Even the 3DS's third-party support is way better than their consoles

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:34 (nine years ago)

I would guess it comes with the display/dock/controller wings and the standalone controller is extra?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:38 (nine years ago)

DS and 3DS have great Japanese 3rd party support yes, not western. Because this is also a portable I believe they'll be able to retain Japanese 3rd party support, further differentiating their lineup from the competition.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:40 (nine years ago)

Vanagon cameo

calstars, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (nine years ago)

xp yeah I think the standalone controller is basically the Pro controller like on the Wii/U

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (nine years ago)

Just consolidating 1st party output to one device is pretty huge, hopefully this means more variety as they don't need to work on 2 Mario Kart games at once for example

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:49 (nine years ago)

pending further information, i am into this. third party support is good from an adoption/longevity pov, Nintendo standards on a powerful handheld is cool (especially if it's more comfortably designed than the wii u tablet)

Cautious optimism

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:54 (nine years ago)

Has it been confirmed that there's no touch? People are surprised there's no use of that in the trailer...

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:56 (nine years ago)

is this likely to be region locked?

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:59 (nine years ago)

i skipped both wiis but i think it may be time to get back into this crap

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:02 (nine years ago)

xp

@ArcadeGirl64 53s53 seconds ago
As I previously reported in my September 2nd post, Nintendo Switch is 100% region free.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:07 (nine years ago)

The people whose leaks have been most accurate e.g. Emily Rogers have been saying that it will be region free, and Iwata said on a few occasions that they were thinking about it. This console has got to have some big dumb thing wrong with it tho so it could be that :/

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:08 (nine years ago)

holding out for the big mario party announcement

nxd, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:09 (nine years ago)

I'm going to end up having to buy two of these.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:31 (nine years ago)

i was also surprised that apparently there's no touch-capability.

i haven't had a nintendo console since the wii (which i attempted to mod and ended up bricking within 2 years), but i'm not sure this is going to be the one.

the whole gimmick where you can transform it into a handheld and go off to the williamsburg party and play videogames on the rooftop at the bbq - that's kinda cool in theory but i know i would never do something like that. when i walk my dog in the early morning, i like to just sit on the bench and pay attention to her, i don't want to resume my dragon quest at that moment. and after getting beaten down IRL 2v2 basketball underneath a bustling highway, i know my bros aren't going to want to play nba 2k18 with me. they'll probably be mad at me for being bad at basketball irl, 15 minutes earlier. i don't play games on public transport either. i'm just not a handheld person, so i feel like the main purpose of the system design isn't aimed toward me.

kind of raisin' an eyebrow at the cartridge thing, although maybe these days cartridges can handle resource-intensive games? either way, i guess it has to be a cartridge so that you can Switch(tm) your game into mobile mode so you can level up while you're eating brunch and windsurfing in the afternoon.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:47 (nine years ago)

whoooa, that came out way more negative than i meant it to be, sorry. i'm sure this will be a cool system and i will be jealous of all people getting to play the nintendo 1st party franchise sequels, for real.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:50 (nine years ago)

solid state storage is fast in a way optical media will never be, and I get the impression that the Japanese market wouldn't be about a download-only platform. Also yeah carrying around an optical drive would work about as well as a discman.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:52 (nine years ago)

(a discman that needed to stream textures to the GPU without skipping.)

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:52 (nine years ago)

idk i think the portability is actually pretty interesting/compelling. the best thing about the Xbox one right now is how it integrates into the windows 10 ecosystem. i can play it on my pc in my office, on my laptop in bed, or on the TV directly from the Xbox in the usual way. this limited portability is pretty awesome, and extending the possibility to take the game with you anywhere is a logical extension and seems pretty cool. Xps

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:54 (nine years ago)

yeh I play handhelds mostly at home, in bed etc. playing an Atlus game while cycling is on TV is my jam!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:00 (nine years ago)

Kind of funny that there were no kids in that video, unless I missed something.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:06 (nine years ago)

I think the average age of someone playing video games is now around 30

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (nine years ago)

goin' for chill hipster demo?

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (nine years ago)

going for that disposable income demo for sure

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:11 (nine years ago)

I would like to see all the cables involved for connectivity ie power/recharging etc

The WiiU is a monster for too many cables, I don't want to go through that again.

"Stop researching my life" (Ste), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (nine years ago)

i can play it on my pc in my office,

oh is that a thing? like, via remote desktop or something? this makes me pretty glad i don't have an xbox.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (nine years ago)

It will have a multi-touch screen. That's semi-confirmed (again from Emily Rogers' so far 100% correct fact sheet)

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:23 (nine years ago)

xp there's a windows 10 app that lets you stream games which is basically, as you say, a remote desktop thing. supposedly you can also set up your home router to allow you to access your Xbox from anywhere with internet but i haven't tried this

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:27 (nine years ago)

You can do that with the PS4 as well, but I haven't used it any further away than a laptop on the same wifi

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:28 (nine years ago)

looks cool

wish i had the desire/time to get back into games

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:32 (nine years ago)

yeah if you could just go into a hotel or a friend's apartment & hook this up to play on the tv, w/o anything complex, that would be terrific.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:52 (nine years ago)

that's actually a good point

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:11 (nine years ago)

ugh new mario looks DREADFUL. they have turned him into a little blond girl with pointy ears running thru the countryside. too far SJWs too fucking far

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:18 (nine years ago)

You guys want a thread title change?

mod, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:21 (nine years ago)

yeh that would help.
the battery life on this thing is going to be terrible isn't it?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:24 (nine years ago)

You can do that with the PS4 as well, but I haven't used it any further away than a laptop on the same wifi

how do you do this???

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:25 (nine years ago)

https://remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:30 (nine years ago)

you've just changed my life. the biggest impediment to ps4 gaming is that my kids are always using the tv.

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:32 (nine years ago)

Changed title to just 'The Nintendo Switch', lmk if you want a ref to the NX in there still.

mod, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:34 (nine years ago)

for some reason i didn't know you could remote play outside the vita, this is good info. @mordy, from my experience doing this on the Xbox it's an awesome feature of the current gen that i wouldn't give for anything. it's rad to know everyone is proceeding on the assumption that portability is a necessary feature

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:38 (nine years ago)

Mordy, the vita really does the trick well ime

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:40 (nine years ago)

it works well for some games for sure, but if you need the r2/l2 buttons regularly it's kind of a chore ime

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

some games also seem to have developed better control schemes for working w vita than others so it may be a game by game basis kind of thing

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

but do i need the vita if i use this software? i think i'd prefer to play on my big macbook retina screen anyway

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)

nah, macbook will likely work better for you if you're a laptop in bed kinda guy

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:45 (nine years ago)

you will probably become that guy, given the opportunity

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:48 (nine years ago)

So I’ve been tasked with getting my 8 yr old kid some sort of gaming system for Xmas and I am completely clueless. X box and PlayStation 5 are like $500 which is too much. Thinking around $200 or so. We may move overseas so ideally it would not be reliant on the internet. He’s currently playing Apple Arcade and Minecraft so I dunno is the switch a good cheaper alternative?

Heez, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 01:23 (one year ago)

you can get the portable only version the switch lite for 200, the regular one you can plug into the tv is 300, and yeah the switch is great its the best, has a lot of games good 4 kids too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 01:29 (one year ago)

Target has the regular switch for 225 with mario kart included. that's a good deal imo.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 27 November 2024 05:21 (one year ago)

$225 is pretty dang good even without Mario Kart, though if you can wait another 6 months for the Switch 2... it might cost $400, so who knows.

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 15:35 (one year ago)

switch 2 will definitely not be available for $225 for years

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 15:35 (one year ago)

also its not coming out before xmas. before next year's xmas, yes

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 15:36 (one year ago)

id get that target deal real nice price there

lag∞n, Wednesday, 27 November 2024 15:37 (one year ago)

three months pass...

last(?) Switch 1 Direct tomorrow, hope that rumoured Fire Emblem 4 remake finally shows up

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 26 March 2025 14:15 (one year ago)

funny that they waited until a week before the switch 2 blowout to sneak this one in

not sure what they could have left that wouldn't get pushed forward to 2 besides some more HD ports of older games + fire emblem yeah

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 March 2025 14:27 (one year ago)

trying to think of what didnt get a switch 1 game. rhythm heaven? wario land? star fox and donkey kong would surely be pushed forward to 2

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 March 2025 14:28 (one year ago)

yeh they usually have games like Kirby, Wario and remasters at the end of the generation, wonder if Metroid 4 is going to be crossgen or if they pushed it to 2

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 26 March 2025 14:38 (one year ago)

is there anything left from the WiiU that can be easily ported? there were those Windwaker/Twilight Princess HD remasters

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 26 March 2025 14:42 (one year ago)

yeah those have to be a lock, in the next year if not right now. the only other game people were generally positive on that hasnt been ported is yoshi's woolly world

ciderpress, Wednesday, 26 March 2025 15:07 (one year ago)

xxp I'd be shocked if Metroid 4 is crossgen - it's the perfect genre and IP to show off the enhanced graphics and portable capabilities of the Switch 2. You also need some compelling games to launch with and Nintendo would have a couple bangers in play with a new Mario and Metroid. That said - BotW was crossgen so who knows.

octobeard, Thursday, 27 March 2025 01:55 (one year ago)

ehh i think it'll still be a switch 1 game, metroid is one of nintendo's smaller series in terms of the number of units it moves, not really a system seller, they're gonna want that extra couple million switch 1 sales to justify the protracted development

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2025 02:09 (one year ago)

Yeah, that sounds about right to me too, so many Switch 1 owners who would happily buy it and frankly I doubt there'll be some kind of killer NSW2 features... but who knows, maybe Nintendo finally gets their online stuff right

Nhex, Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:38 (one year ago)

the new mouse will prob be used for new metroid since its a fps but im sure itll be playable without too

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:42 (one year ago)

yep it was just shown in the switch 1 direct. maybe they'll show it again next week to demonstrate the switch 2's graphics capabilities though that's a very un-nintendo thing to focus on

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:45 (one year ago)

also lol at nintendo poaching multiple sony series (patapon and everybody's golf) sony truly does not care about non-Cinematic games anymore despite astro bot posturing otherwise, they're giving them away

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:47 (one year ago)

haven't played any games in a while but if wind waker gets a switch port, tha drought is over

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:48 (one year ago)

Raidou remaster a big surprise, coming to every other platform too
happy to see a new Rhythm Heaven game

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:48 (one year ago)

have always been curious about saga frontier 2, its one of my favorite artstyles from that era but never played it

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2025 14:56 (one year ago)

I’m a sucker for hot shots golf

||||||||, Thursday, 27 March 2025 15:38 (one year ago)

i was down on the switch mario golf and its gimmick so nice to have another more classic option

ciderpress, Thursday, 27 March 2025 16:17 (one year ago)

loved the psp version of hot shots golf but didn't like the ones I've tried since then
bring back the daftness of pangya imo

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 27 March 2025 17:24 (one year ago)

i was thinking - wasn't Mario Golf basically a skinned Hot Shots Golf, often the same developers even?

new rhythm heaven, yay!

the official Pac-Man metroidvania game looks absurd, love these kinds of things

Nhex, Thursday, 27 March 2025 17:50 (one year ago)

yeah y'all were right - crossgen Metroid it is!

But... giant tree, "magic" powers - is Samus a tarnished now?

octobeard, Thursday, 27 March 2025 18:11 (one year ago)

the pac-man game and the old man platforming game both looked good but I assume those aren't switch exclusives

c u (crüt), Friday, 28 March 2025 18:00 (one year ago)

Sure is a lotta vulva imagery in the new Metroid.

Also, never having a Wii and being somewhat checked out on video games during that stretch, I either completely forgot or didn’t even know there was a Metroid Prime 3.

circa1916, Thursday, 3 April 2025 01:23 (one year ago)

eleven months pass...

replayed metroid dread, real good game the movement is crisp and nice, i found it pretty easy this time tho i remembered it being kind of hard, one thing is it sort of betrays the metroid formula by effectively guiding you to your next intended destination, theres not actually a lot of backtracking or needing to find things if you just go the obvious way the game wants you to, its not totally obvious theyre doing it its well done which is nice it feels good to progress along, maybe i found it easier this time because i wasnt trying as hard just breezing along instead of looking all around, only annoying thing they basically make you fight three versions of the same boss in quick succession at the end of the game wonder if those were intended to be different guys but they ran out of time
