some guys in my town were out late at night playing this and helped catch a serial vandal who's been targeting Asian businesses in town:

am I alone in thinking this is a pointless POS?

I guess in the same sense that practically everything we employ to distract us from our impending mortality is a pointless POS. It's a POS I don't personally see the point in (I prefer asocial and indoor POS games) but I'm glad that this particular POS is making so many other people happy.

xp to ste: only in that you have to go outside with a gps. the closest approximation is the pokestops/portals, but they're just arbitrary sites and don't have a physical container full of toys or anything. the pokemon appear all over the place, but they can appear more often around those pokestops if someone has lit a virtual flare under them (and even then they're not locked to a specific point, you can walk up the street and the pokemon sort of drifts along with you).

So unfair this isn't properly launched in the UK yet. I'm already reading about it constantly.

it's pretty easy to get and runs pretty well

I'm crushing it on my morning bus ride. Average about 30 to 40 captures every morning.

i completely missed pokemon as a youth, know literally nothing about it --- is it really something that people grew up on? was it that ubiquitous? i always thought it was a p niche thing, like magic cards or something

― jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, July 11, 2016 10:43 AM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

same. it's omnipresent among all my young musician friends (mid 20s), but i'm very surprised if i hear about anyone in their 30s who is conversant in Pokemon. certainly not any of my irl friends.

(i did play Magic btw, but don't remember anyone talking about Pokemon ever)

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

didn't see people playing this today, really. not like yesterday. think the trend has passed

Treeship, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 21:56 (nine years ago)

ppl who are 30 know pokemon. idk about ppl "in their thirties"

Treeship, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 21:56 (nine years ago)

i'm turning 32 this summer and i think i was right on the bubble, most of my friends older than me didn't get it and almost everyone younger than me did

a simba man (Will M.), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 22:09 (nine years ago)

sounds about right, I have no idea what these things are

mh, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 22:23 (nine years ago)

I am 31. The day I bought pokemon diamond, I played until 5am and then had to show up for work at 7:30am. So I know all about pokemon, i.e. I know to stay far, far away from this game.

Salsa Golf (Argentinean Ketchup) (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 22:29 (nine years ago)

I'm 36 and I know Pokemon well. But I'm also very childish.

Jeff, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 22:32 (nine years ago)

40 and I've played every generation apart from black/white. Not proud of this.

JimD, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:00 (nine years ago)

41 and I only know about pokemon through my son

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:13 (nine years ago)

33 and I remember the initial US craze, but I wasn't interested at the time (either I had burned out on card games after M:tG, or was too snobbish about trends to take part); in the last several years, though, I've been aware how Pokemon, like Harry Potter, is just lingua franca for most of my very slightly younger friends.

im 32 in a couple of weeks and was "too old" at the time for pokemon. though my brother, 2 and a half years older, was into it. he's a huge nerd.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:30 (nine years ago)

The two trans women who won Democratic congressional primaries this year are 33 and 30, and they both chose the name Misty, which may be a coincidence, or another mark of Pokemon's hold on my generation's sensibility.

one way street, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:36 (nine years ago)

yeah pokemon came to the states around 96 i think, and i was just the right age for the craze (7)

I think DC is not as crazy about this because we are all too busy using our phones to do "work"

I work near the Lincoln Memorial. I meant to head out there today and see if there was anyone Pokemanning.

I'm 36. A pair of my roommates in college were obsessed with Pokemon around 2000 when it was first getting huge, but it seemed pretty weird to me even then. I still watched all the shows with them, but I didn't really care too much about it. They watched Digimon too and I remember liking that better.

how's life, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 00:48 (nine years ago)

Yeah I'm 45, this escaped me completely, i was already an adult when it was a thing.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 01:00 (nine years ago)

I already said how I missed everything between 1992 and 2007. But I've been relearning everything with the kids, starting with this mysterious Spongebob character who I've now seen all 982 episodes of. That said, the kids hadn't got to Pokemon yet, probably because it's old game that uses physical pogs or whatever.

However - Pokemon, Mario, Angry Birds, Legos - it doesn't matter. I'd be all over this stupid game if my Android phone wasn't a piece of shit.

pplains, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 01:01 (nine years ago)

I'm just saying I've only had one busride sighting of a pokemon goer, I expected a lot more. maybe I'll keep an eye out tomorrow

I did wonder to myself today how many pokemon might die, uncaptured, inside all the military bases and spy agencies in the rooms where no phones are allowed

they should put pokestops in the anterooms with the phone-sized gym lockers, perhaps

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 01:04 (nine years ago)

but it seemed pretty weird to me even then.

Should clarify that I mean the fact they were watching this children's show when they were ostensibly grown-ups. It was super-regressive.

how's life, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 01:05 (nine years ago)

i'm 32 and didn't get into it when it came out but there's been plenty of time in btwn then and now for me to play a few of them.

caught my highest level pokemon yet tnite in the churchyard near my parent's house: CP151 Pinsir
