That's not really how it works. You use your phone (or the menu) to start an online mode (heist, mission, race, etc.). The free roam is mostly just a place to fuck around, although there's plenty of stuff to do in it if you want to.

this. every single word in it seemed to be written by a dude who just got dumped by his first girlfriend and had a lot of ugly *feelings* to work out. the online was great, though.

The NPCs in GTA Online are occasionally pretty sketchy.

RDR had to have writing that wasn't scrambling to pose as 21st-C satire, so it as if they had to force themselves into the constraints of coming up with dialogue & plot for the first time since Bully. Which is a shame, because once in a while, something worthwhile shines thru in their writing even on GTA stuff like the character relations in Gay Tony or even moments in GTA5.

But everything else is operating under some editorial or creative imperative to have nothing but the most horrible, cardboard people presented with the most freshman-year cynicism. All of the parodic or satirical shit even in 5 felt like nothing had advanced from 2001.

Started playing RDR again this morning thanks to this thread.

As long as you aren't a completist, there's no such thing as a game being too long. You just play until you're satisfied and then stop, and the game is the perfect length.

feel like i generally agree w/ that but w/ a game that gets raves based on its ending it's kinda a shame to miss it bc you weren't willing to slog thru 20 more hours of gameplay

eh, don't know about that. you could apply the same reasoning to almost anything that's too long

some things really are too long. there are ways to adapt, and no one's forcing anyone to complete anything, but that doesn't mean that some games (and other media) don't go on for too long, pointlessly and repetitively.

What would they do for the next one? They were already starting off pretty late for a Wild West adventure. Will the cowboys start running liquor for the mob?

Or maybe, it will be a prequel.

frustrating minigames: the game

now i remember that i never got more than like 12 hours into a rockstar game, fuuuuuuuuuuuck this

just after finally figuring out the hellish lasso minigame i have to do more herding on my horse that sucks

rockstar i just want to play your games without breaking my controller in half yk

how to herd
1. find a mass of cattle and go to the opposite side of where you're trying to push them
2. try to push them the right way
3. behold as a small rock splits the herd and sends them both the wrong way
4. get the herd back together and try again
5. behold as the camera does the wrong thing and then your horse does the wrong thing because none of this works smoothly
6. where is the entire herd

how to lasso
1. finally get the fucking lasso around the fucking horse
2. google why the horse keeps immediately breaking away because the tutorial doesn't tell you that you need to hold the button
3. finally get the fucking lasso around the fucking horse
4. dismount your horse
5. mount your horse again because it was within 100 miles of the horse you were actually trying to mount
6. where is the horse

how to play horseshoes
1. bet 1 dollar and continually lose the easiest challenges because you just want that fucking outfit

I enjoyed RDR at the time (especially the zombie dlc iirc) but don't think I could do it now.

Zero's third mission ("New Model Army") was really fun. Almost made that brutal second mission worth it.

I just don't understand why this studio pours 7 billion dollars into these games and then makes sure the player spends at least 30% of them stuck in minigames that seem to be designed by teenagers who would otherwise spend their time pumping out flappy bird clones with malware

I've been constantly playing GTA Online since I got it. Conversely, I've played GTA V maybe like three or four times.

I don't think I've even come close to finishing a Rockstar game. Maybe like 3/4 of the way through GTA 3 but that was it.

I think if you're stuck in the mini games on rdr there must be something wrong. Seem to remember 95% of the time was riding a horse and shooting ppl and animals. You know you can just grab a horse and leave wherever you are at any time right?

I have finished many main stories in rockstar games but clearly never completed the games 100%.
the minigames in RDR are annoying as well as some missions (mostly the races afaic) but there is something I like in the idea of the game... maybe more than in the actual game as it's very repetitive.
that said I like... the poker parties !

Poker was the hardest mini-game by far for me.

ahah. but if you know how to play poker, it's a nice game in itself.
you can spend a lot of time just playing that...
although they could have added the possibility to take out your gun to make it more of a part of the main game !

I have played RDR a few months ago and went all Westworld on it by stopping in a little village and shooting everybody.
it was a little frustrating because people kept respawning as if nothing happened.
