I dl'd wizards and wagons b/c it sounded good on touch arcade and it is boring. I might try it again but the "combat sequences" are the pits.

I just want a good and simple and fast implementation of dopewars I think

i permanently banned Touch Arcade from my life after it gave a glowing review of Dandy.

Karl Malone, Monday, 28 December 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

I'm super down on iOS gaming right now; don't have an iPad any more so big games like rct3 and balder's gate etc are off limits, and I'm terribly sick of games with little trickles of new characters and little else like crossy road. and stupid puzzle craft 2 and tap tycoon. why do I get looped into this crap? If I'm gonna be addicted to a game, let it be something totalizing that I can't think of anything and just want to keep playing, instead of "fuck in 6 hours I'll have to load up this game again and click some crap for 3 minutes and let the timers go". I guess this is just f2p (I don't spend money on f2p obv, except $20 one time on mpq pbuh).

a couple days ago dug out my ds and have been loving the oldies but goodies, but I'd like something good on the phone too.

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 28 December 2015 16:30 (ten years ago)

Most of the time, I won't even download a game if there are IAP. Especially if you look at them and it's bs like "bag full of jewels" or something of that ilk.

Jeff, Monday, 28 December 2015 16:55 (ten years ago)

Been playing Leo's Fortune (on sale right now I think), and it's a nice mix of platforming and (pretty simple so far) puzzles.

schwantz, Monday, 28 December 2015 21:34 (ten years ago)

i keep meaning to check it out! downloading now.

in ancient iphone news, i finally played monument valley. i didn't like it (i think i'm the only one on earth). i mean the graphics are good and everything but they forgot to put a game in there. i guess i need the threat of permadeath.

i didn't really understand how this game was a 'puzzle' game, which was a shame, because the original concept seemed like it allowed for some of them. i mean, you have to engage your brain significantly more to get through an average sonic 2 level

carly rae jetson (thomp), Tuesday, 29 December 2015 04:41 (ten years ago)

agree with karl and thomp re: monument valley.

think i love downwell in every way but it feels frustrating to play without three buttons... prefer turn-based on phone generally. only been completely consumed by threes and 868-HACK so far. hoplite also great. runners up for desert golf and other brough games

home organ, Tuesday, 29 December 2015 04:54 (ten years ago)

some of the later MV levels were a bit puzzle-like, but mainly it was just sorta pretty and mellow.

messing with divide by sheep and rayman adventures these days

Furdemption on the iPad saved my Christmas.

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 3 January 2016 13:56 (ten years ago)

dream quest is one of the best iOS games. if it had decent graphics, it would be huge. i'm not even a huge fan of CCG/hearthstone-style games and i've found it addicting

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2016 15:34 (ten years ago)

i guess we all slept on it in 2014 because it didn't even appear in coint and plick

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2016 15:39 (ten years ago)

Yes! Dream quest!

Jeff, Friday, 8 January 2016 15:59 (ten years ago)

yeah, on your recommendation upthread! i read very positive reviews of it last year but then completely forgot about it til you mentioned it.

Karl Malone, Friday, 8 January 2016 16:04 (ten years ago)

Currently trying to beat it with the Druid. Tough, because you alternate rounds as a human and as a wolf. The human can only use spell/action/mana/equipment cards, the wolf can only use action/attack/equipment cards, so you essentially have to build two decks in one that can stand on their own. And make sure you're battling the right enemies with the right character.

It's so heartbreaking, I'll get a game going and have an awesome poison generating deck, where I can get like 30 poison on someone quickly, but then the final battle is the stupid Vampire who is immune to poison and I lose in like 5 turns.

Jeff, Saturday, 9 January 2016 01:32 (ten years ago)

I've beat it with the paladin, thief, samurai, and ranger so far.

Jeff, Saturday, 9 January 2016 01:34 (ten years ago)

I'm waaaaay toward the beginning I think. I only just unlocked the monk. (Also I am bad). But the difficulty curve is so good. I feel like I get a little better every time, due not just from the occasional passive boost or whatever but also my underlying skill

Karl Malone, Saturday, 9 January 2016 02:43 (ten years ago)

Best beginner class - samurai?

Karl Malone, Saturday, 9 January 2016 02:44 (ten years ago)

I get farther with the samurai but have more fun as a wizard.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 9 January 2016 02:45 (ten years ago)

I think samurai was the first one I beat it with.

Jeff, Saturday, 9 January 2016 03:10 (ten years ago)

Thief is fun because you can string together massive hands with circle/slice/swiftness/jab/alacrity and then nail them with a backstab or dice.

Jeff, Saturday, 9 January 2016 03:26 (ten years ago)

man i downloaded dream quest on the bus earlier and yes, i will happily spend a lot of bus journeys playing it, and no, it is not good

carly rae jetson (thomp), Saturday, 9 January 2016 11:55 (ten years ago)

'wouldn't desktop dungeons be better with CCG combat? ... and also grinding?'

carly rae jetson (thomp), Saturday, 9 January 2016 11:56 (ten years ago)

obviously your choice on whether to keep going or not, but it's a lot different than desktop dungeons (which i also liked). i mean, of course it shares many similarities with it because it's a roguelike with different classes, but desktop dungeons shares those characteristics with a lot of other games as well. and although it's true that it's probably impossible to defeat the final boss (who i haven't even seen yet) within your first few plays because you have to improve yr passive traits and gain access to new cards, the gameplay doesn't feel like grinding to me. it's just fun.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 9 January 2016 16:42 (ten years ago)

oh come on, this guy obviously saw desktop dungeons and decided to make his own thing. it has the exact same ui! also the health pickups, the 'wacky/goofy/tongue-in-cheek' flavor text

it's fun but also frustrating because with a few more whacks of the balance stick it could be actually good

carly rae jetson (thomp), Sunday, 10 January 2016 01:11 (ten years ago)

he also apparently got hired to the hearthstone team on the strength of it so more power to him i guess

carly rae jetson (thomp), Sunday, 10 January 2016 01:23 (ten years ago)

I originally tried out Cardinal Quest 2 on my ipad mini and rated it pretty lame at the time. Now there's been a ton of updates apparently, I put it on my phone a while ago, and just picked it up today because I had a bunch of stupid timer things going in Spirit Lords. I have now put in probably a total of at least 3.5 hours and it's not even close to bedtime.

El Tomboto, Monday, 18 January 2016 02:05 (ten years ago)

maybe i should start playing it. been playing some wayward souls finally but i'm not v. good so its too much a grind.

went back to classics -- super mamc and punchquest and yeah there's really nothing in the last year that i've enjoyed remotely as much. just so frenetic and energetic, like real pick up & play ish. idky why games feel like they're so asset-heavy and draggy lately (or just post flappy-bird type one-note minimal obsessive things).

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Monday, 18 January 2016 02:58 (ten years ago)

good old punch quest. I quit playing after I reset my ipad and realized that I couldn't restore my progress (wigs, hats, perks etc) without restoring my entire ipad backup. F that.

El Tomboto, Monday, 18 January 2016 18:04 (ten years ago)

rick and morty has a pokemon style game
also lifeline is v good
both free

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 January 2016 01:20 (ten years ago)

Getting Lifeline now

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 January 2016 01:24 (ten years ago)

I've only followed one story path, and it's a doozy. Curious to rewind and play again, see how differently I can have things turn out. This kind of game (like, say, 80 Days) is interesting to me in exact proportion to the branches of its narrative.

rb (soda), Tuesday, 19 January 2016 01:43 (ten years ago)

imho when starting out in Cardinal Quest, save your mana to unlock the Ranger first. That little dog is a bad ass.

I think the thief with a couple of lucky drops is the most fun I've had so far (specifically, getting the displacement spell so I could just pluck individual monsters from a crowd, send them off to some other part of the dungeon and then sneak up and backstab them at my leisure). Imagining the sheer terror of those poor goblins and ogres after I got shadow mastery. I'M THE BATMAN.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 January 2016 01:55 (ten years ago)

I also grabbed Pixel Starships because why not
Anybody else tried it out?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 January 2016 13:28 (ten years ago)

Crashlands!

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Saturday, 23 January 2016 08:47 (ten years ago)

are you playing it ON IPHONE or ON IPAD? looks fun but if the interface is bad on phone then I'll skip it

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 23 January 2016 12:46 (ten years ago)

on iphone -- interface is pretty good for the running and exploring. the only rough spot in the entire thing is the map isn't touch & drag, but that's so inessential to gameplay it hardly matters.

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Saturday, 23 January 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)

ok cool, I'll have a look. hope it's not a battery killer, feel like they should add info about that on the app store.

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 23 January 2016 18:03 (ten years ago)

oh yeah, its reputedly a battery killer

I think Churchill Solitaire is the first solitaire game I've played that has a campaign mode. Definitely the first with a rousing action movie score.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Sunday, 24 January 2016 22:03 (ten years ago)

I need to hear more about Crashlands, I'm holding off getting it until I get my ipad screen fixed and all the streamers playing it on Twitch are kind of unbearable

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Monday, 25 January 2016 23:44 (ten years ago)

i deeply regret starting to play dream quest

carly rae jetson (thomp), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 13:07 (ten years ago)

Jeff when you say 'beat' just to confirm you mean 'beat the guy at the end with 1,000 hp' right

carly rae jetson (thomp), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 13:08 (ten years ago)

god i just skimmed a terribly written review of crashlands and it noted that the game included both pets and a crafting system while pointing out it might not be deep enough for some players

carly rae jetson (thomp), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 13:11 (ten years ago)

these things are both true -- the system is very pick up & go and streamlined, moreso than any other pet or crafting system i've seen. that said, this game has eaten lots of time so far. if it came out a month earlier it would have been my 2015 goty for sure. if people haven't played towlfight its pretty great too.

through two of the three worlds now and its been p. great. the combat is really nice & the open world is very well done.

Option ARMs and de Man (s.clover), Monday, 1 February 2016 04:06 (ten years ago)

still waiting to find out if jeff has actually beaten dream quest

carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 1 February 2016 12:00 (ten years ago)

Oh missed that! I've beat it with several of the classes but I think there is another big bad guy that somehow I haven't reached? Because I still have unlocked those "reduce boss to under xxx hp" achievements. I should research.

Taking a dream quest break, been digging card crawler, even though it's more of a grind at times.

Jeff, Monday, 1 February 2016 13:49 (ten years ago)

You need to play it on the higher difficulty level to find the boss at the end.

AlanSmithee, Monday, 1 February 2016 14:26 (ten years ago)

Oh geez, it's hard enough as it is.

Jeff, Monday, 1 February 2016 15:01 (ten years ago)
