love the Umihara series, it's got a bit of a steep learning curve mechanically but once you get the hang of it it really comes into its own. The guy behind the Dark Souls PC fix has been working on a fix to unlock the resolution etc. http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=763
Capcom humble bundle up, Resident Evil/Strider/DMC etc.

having finally gotten around to getting a controller, i am now starting to go through the pile of shame from the beginning. PLEASANT SURPRISE I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT, HAVING GOT IT FROM SOME KIND OF BUNDLE AND PROBABLY HAVING NEVER KNOWN WHAT IT WAS: two-year-old abstract platformer 140. this is a fun, charming thing, probably the best of its kind since the first squaresoft space invaders

I just tried 140. I like it!

xxp love that a guy is working on fixing that UK port

Nhex, Sunday, 18 October 2015 04:09 (eight years ago) link

140 was exactly as long as it needed to be, which is a thing I really appreciate! it would have been even better if the music was actually good and the last boss challenge wasn't so ennnnnnnhh. Solid eight out of ten.

Many of these work in-browser, and the rest you can download.

SUPERHOT is the best paranoid psychedelic fps i have ever played

Has anyone else tried Californium? I'm digging it so far

Darkest Cosmologist junk (kingfish), Monday, 29 February 2016 07:46 (eight years ago) link

what's Californium like? sounds pretty unique from the stuff on the site but can't get a grasp on what it's actually like to play

NI, Monday, 29 February 2016 17:35 (eight years ago) link

I played Firewatch; it was a confoundingly beautiful game, but I'm just not sure how much "there" there is there, if you get my drift. The ending is a total copout, and I struggled mightily to not hear Harry Crane jabbering into those walkie-talkies. again, however, it is a CONFOUNDINGLY gorgeous game; I'll remember that park way on down the line.

on balance I recommend it - I do have a few reservations, but it's still a worthwhile expenditure of time IMO

I played through "day 1" of firewatch last night and I'm pretty bored so far.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 29 February 2016 18:26 (eight years ago) link

worth noting that one of the days you play in that game is "Day 77" collective subconscious etc https://goo.gl/photos/zefKtVUU2YxjnRRNA

guys i really think yall should play SUPERHOT

adam, Monday, 29 February 2016 19:51 (eight years ago) link

it's stylized fps + 70s paranoid thriller + really weird and bold design approach

adam, Monday, 29 February 2016 19:52 (eight years ago) link

i played the web browser demo of superhot and i liked it

jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 29 February 2016 20:17 (eight years ago) link

they've added in sort of a narrative and an appealing framing device

adam, Monday, 29 February 2016 20:56 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it looks dope. will wait until later in the year to backlog it, tbh

Nhex, Monday, 29 February 2016 21:36 (eight years ago) link

i really like the writing in firewatch, something i've hardly ever said about any game ever, but it's not so much wild fun to play, more a really well-executed mystery/thriller. i like what it points toward re: future of game dialogue & plot but a touch more 'game' would be nice - a variety of endings is kinda bare minimum, bit surprising this wasn't on offer

witness on the other hand isn't gripping me at all. done that first maze room and it all felt a bit zz and shallow, kinda like how The Talos Principle never grabbed me.

trying lifeless planet at the moment but i'm craving a decent story after firewatch and this all seems a bit 16bit.

i guess i don't really know what i want from a game anymore, other than a bulked-up firewatch circa 2019 (imagine if the money & time gone into crap like heavy rain and la noire had gone on something like that, gaming would be in a much better place right now)

NI, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 03:29 (eight years ago) link

Re: witness, which maze room? Beyond the tutorial area? The glass castle gate marks the ending of the tutorial

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 03:42 (eight years ago) link

ah i don't think i got that far! does it change dramatically? it did feel kinda talos-y, which i found really boring and samey after a while

NI, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 04:08 (eight years ago) link

no joke when you said "tried lifeless planet" i thought WAIT DID NO MANS SKY COME OUT

even my tired subconscious brain throws shade

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 06:11 (eight years ago) link

the superhot demo was the shit

I've been playing risk of rain and although it's often a masochistic exercise, any step forward is thoroughly joyous. And they do happen! Just takes forever.

ulysses, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 15:42 (eight years ago) link

is no mans sky releasing on pc or just playstation?

ciderpress, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 15:57 (eight years ago) link

both i think!

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

risk of rain had a really cool vibe but i never got good at it. love the sound in that game.

adam, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

hadn't heard of lifeless planet, gonna add that to my to-play list after firewatch i guess

ciderpress, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:12 (eight years ago) link

Risk of Rain is FUCKING HARD! And each new character you unlock requires an almost completely different play style. I've been on this game for about a month and i still haven't beaten it once on easy!

ulysses, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:47 (eight years ago) link

i've heard the difficulty is designed for 2+ player co-op and is pretty much impossible to solo

Mordy, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:48 (eight years ago) link

I can attest to that. But I can't ever find anyone who wants to play! I'm gonna beat this fucker at some point, i swear.

ulysses, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 16:53 (eight years ago) link

liking Owlboy a whole lot; it feels like a late-period SNES platformer stuffed to the gills with modern gameplay amenities. buy it while it's on sale right now.

btw does anyone have an opinion about that game Steep? the pitch is that it's like skate (RIP), but with snowboarding rather than skateboarding; it sounds appealing to me, but even with the sale discount it's still $40.

i'm going to be up for getting a new laptop soon and i'm torn. on one hand i feel like since my #1 activity is gaming i should probably switch back to a PC but otoh i like using OSX significantly more than i like using Windows. why can't apple just make a good gaming laptop?

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link

how much does whatever difference there is between windows and osx actually come up day-to-day with what you're using a laptop for? personally i can't see any sense in getting a mac, including paying the mac premium, when you know you'll be playing a lot of games.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link

i use both at work - literally side by side. a lenovo touch screen ideapad and a macbook retina pro. i find it significantly more pleasant using the macbook. just simple things like Mail vs. Outlook. cannot stand using Outlook.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

Right there with you dude
At the moment I'm using boot camp on my 2014 retina mbpro to play through resident evil 7. I have a stand alone cheap windows laptop as well, which can play the game at a better frame rate and resolution - but the regular user experience is so much worse. So rather than switching back and forth I'm just using the mac (and now my mac partition is running out of space). Can't win

calstars, Friday, 10 February 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

so i've got my ps4 streaming wonderfully thru my macbook w/ zero lag and great looking graphics so i don't actually feel like i'm missing any games (and i don't have to deal w/ the pita of bootcamp)

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 16:29 (seven years ago) link

i gave into bootcamp this time around for Overwatch
a decision was that Windows 10 doesn't nag you/cripple you to register, so you can run it pretty much forever without having to buy it
that said, my Steam backlog (even counting only the Mac games) has more games than I can ever play, I'm sure it's the same for you

Nhex, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:06 (seven years ago) link

yes, definitely. not to mention games i sunk considerably time into, wandered away from meaning to go back to (coughpillarsofeternitycough) and likely never will

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:10 (seven years ago) link
