i'm finding quiet a real drag (just got her), she keeps shooting guys and waking up the whole camp! guess i need to outfit HER with a zzz sniper rifle too?
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 12 October 2015 20:31 (ten years ago)
as soon as side op 107 shows up, complete it and the ones that follow it. it pops up after mission 13. it will make your life easier AND more fun.
xp and for quiet, eventually you can unlock her suppressed rifles (zzz and kill kill kill), and also another one which is apparently like a crazy anti-materiel rifle (since i don't really use her i never unlocked it! d-dog is my homeboy)
― nerd shit (Will M.), Monday, 12 October 2015 20:34 (ten years ago)
it takes a handful of missions just bringing Quiet along before she learns the "cover me" command and cracks the game open. still prefer D-Dog for scouting reasons but Quiet can tranq an entire outpost for you if you develop her the right gear
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 October 2015 20:38 (ten years ago)
oh man, some of the prosthetic arms are fun as HELLLLLLLLL. hand of jehuty and rocket arm are SO GREBT once you unlock them!
I had a hard time w Rocket Arm doing that one mission they used to reveal it. I've been using the electric shock move recently and it is awesome.
D-Walker's drive mode is really good for getting around esp Africa since it is flatter landscape. You can use cars too but you might mess them up, D-Walker can drop from any height.
I really like the buddies system, they are all super unique and cool, and all have individual strengths and weaknesses. Are there any other games where you have selectable AI buddies like this? All I can think of is Elizabeth from Bioshock but she was more like a travelling ammo and health spawning point.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 October 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)
I did the missile recommended scenes with the basic rocket launcher. It takes 4-5 rockets to kill a tank but if you stay close to the HQ in the 2 tanks + MPV one there's a restock of rockets in there.
re: suppressors I was always paranoid that supply drops would alert people but apparently everyone else just calls them in right on the edge of where they're infiltrating/fighting and it's NBD.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 12 October 2015 22:15 (ten years ago)
yeah, i got slightly closer and closer with them each time and never got noticed. tempted to try dropping them on an enemy's head for a stun, that could be fun.
― nerd shit (Will M.), Monday, 12 October 2015 22:47 (ten years ago)
Oh it's a riot. Any time you are stumped on how to take someone out at a light or gun post or something just mark them and supply drop that spot.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 October 2015 23:20 (ten years ago)
still just playing this in small increments 1 or 2 missions / side ops at a time, only 4% completion. i fultoned some guy not far enough away and a guard called it in as basically "one of our men just flew away on a balloon"
― am0n, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 20:12 (ten years ago)

got Emmerich with the walker, accidentally drove off the map and it wouldn't even kick me back to a checkpoint I have to do the entire mission again. Goddamit
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 05:26 (ten years ago)
There are a few missions where they really sting you, it's like they want you to do the whole thing basically perfectly or not at all
'The Mist' guys are starting to get annoying, they're supposed to be these ultimate badasses but I just run away from them, they zig zag around me like pestering flies and then I make it to the edge of the map and I win
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 07:37 (ten years ago)
yeah, those guys are a fucking pain. i'm always tooled up with stealth / knockout weapons so whenever those irritating bastards appear i've got nothing capable of killing them, which leads to me running benny hill-style around the countryside. the mission at the airport where you're forced to take them on is the most frustrating level in the game :(
― bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 12:59 (ten years ago)
did the first main mission last night - i'm prob low attention span but after finding out where the guy i'm meant to find is, via the info in the first outpost, i had no idea i was meant to leave that town and head on somewhere else. i keep missing the garbled messages on the intercom. i wandered around the town for ages killing russian soldiers. i got a lot of good gear out of it but it took me about 3 days.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 14:48 (ten years ago)
Yeah this game is insanely large. I have played over 200 hours and am still having brand new experiences.
Did my first dreaded FOB defense today. An alarm was sent up while I was getting frustrated w a side op so I took it, added a lethal Brennan sniper rifle to my load out, and warped to Mother Base. Arrived right at the core, the point where the invader has to reach, and was relieved to see a bunch of my men and women patrolling the platform at all levels, looking for the intruder alongside me.
After a minute the game went into Reflex mode, signaling someone spotting the invader. I hear a tranq shot indicating that one of my soldiers had been neutralized. From the sound of it, it was close, so I positioned myself at the entrance of the final platform and aimed towards the stairs. As luck had it the invader came running up the stairs soon after, and I stunned and fultoned him, successfully defending the base. Earned some of these points and that points. Had a scary minute or two and then felt awesome. Yay.
There are so many people freaking out about FOB defense but it really is a piece of cake. Hell it's a lot of fun.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:14 (ten years ago)
If you ignore the alarm do your peeps just attempt to defend it without you?
(And what is warping???)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)
Yeah they defend it wo you. Warping is, during FOB missions it will warp you onto their FOB. Like through a tear in time and space.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:28 (ten years ago)
i am enjoying this but it's full of minor frustrations. the controls are kind of unintuitive - changing weapons is a fucking nightmare. too many instructions are just garbled - like urm wurm boss chopper, and i'm just left wondering what the fuck is going on. i'd have liked a more dumbed down tutorial to get me into it as i'm pretty poor at the stealth stuff. maybe i'm just not as young as i was.
another thing, the map doesn't zoom in close enough when you're on missions and all the menus are horrible.
i reckon 3/4 times (perhaps every time someone is showing me how to do something) i have no idea what they said and they just keep repeating it. a lot of irritating user experiences, eg finding the chopper after running away from the mist guys for the first time, and it keeps saying it has to fly away because there's an obstacle, the obstacle was just my fucking horse that i hadn't got off yet.
oh and is the story too dire for everyone else to pay any attention to? i haven't got a clue what's going on or what "cipher" is, or basically anything, i try to listen but every cliched line just floats past me.
apart from all that this is cool!

― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Friday, 16 October 2015 00:29 (ten years ago)
to your points:the controls took me the entire demo to get the hang of and about four days of regular play to start to feel natural.the menus are all horrible. the map absolutely drives me nuts sometimes.the helicopter and the wait times are abominable.i have no idea what is going on in the story; it is all deeply juvenile and idiotic. it is a very very very fun game though.
― a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 October 2015 01:04 (ten years ago)
yeah I have still seen enough to keep playing for sure. I just got to the base, so I'm guessing all the tooling up etc gets fun.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 16 October 2015 07:51 (ten years ago)
yo forks, no joke. get that companion app for the phone and never open your map again.

― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 16 October 2015 15:05 (ten years ago)

― a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 October 2015 19:33 (ten years ago)
there's apparently a $20 dongle made my madcatz or whoever that handily allows you to bolt your phone to the top of your ps4 controller, giving you a wiiu-style experience for the map, i heard it works pretty well. just be prepared to have yr device plugged in the whole time, that app makes shit run hot
― nerd shit (Will M.), Friday, 16 October 2015 19:37 (ten years ago)
this game is frustrating as hell. i feel like some of my more successful raids have been lucky, and other times a tiny slip of a button (the stand/crouch/crawl thing is completely fucked) and suddenly i'm seen. i'm now on the fourth or fifth mission where you have to blow up the comms devices. how the fuck was i supposed to know, minus google, that i needed to earn and equip c4 to do this? it is also really frustrating once you fail a mission and have to start miles out of town all over again, it encourages hurrying which leads to further failure. prob not a problem if you are less shit at this than me!
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Thursday, 22 October 2015 20:01 (ten years ago)
You can take out the antennas by just shooting them too. Also you can find the one building (near the back of the base) that houses the comm equipment and just shoot that.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 22 October 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)
yeah i figured that via my eventual googling, but by that point i'd got killed having got right beside the first antenna but gone wandering for explosives

So I got to the Skulls battle at the airport and man - finally an awesome boss battle! Those fuckers are tough. I was slowly figuring it out and then I decided to see what would happen if I just hightailed it out of there. Got the the edge of the mission area, hid, and... where were they? I looked through my binoculars and saw them in the distance, shooting in another direction. What were they shooting at? And then I saw the green laser. Quiet! I'd forgotten completely that I'd brought her along! Luckily she had her actual rifle rather than the snoozer and she was just patiently whacking them with headshots, bing bing bing bing. I waited and watched. Eventually she dusted them all. Mission over. !!
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 30 October 2015 00:10 (ten years ago)
i'm torn about this game, lot of aspects i rly hate. i wish i could turn ranking off. i beat the mission, fuck off with your d-minus grade
― am0n, Friday, 30 October 2015 16:06 (ten years ago)
whats the point of reflex mode if youre some distance away? great im frozen in slo-mo and have to wait 30 secs for everyone to kill me
― am0n, Friday, 30 October 2015 16:31 (ten years ago)
it's so you can really bask in your humiliation
agreed about the grade, and i hate how i can hear in his tone of voice what i've made just before it pops onto the screen
this is a much more single-minded game that previous entries. there is basically ONE mechanic and the missions are dedicated to exploiting every possible configuration of it. previous MGS games would almost be like a collection of mini-games, with drastically different mechanics, strung together by some basic sneaking.
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 30 October 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)
I was trying to find out which MG game made me dismiss the whole series.
It was Solid Snake 2 on gamecube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hRVl6GK1VU
sooo it took me a while to realize this was the game because that f*cking intro doesn't let you see gameplay for half a hour.
I like to watch intros. So I do recall watching this. I'm not sure if I read everything because at some point I probably got hypnotized by the scanlines and started picturing imaginary whales floating through a tangerine dream.
Then when I did get to play I watched boring communications and died multiple times.
This game sucks. I returned it to the store.
//
My other MG experience was on NES when I was a kid. Those alarms are frustrating! It's like getting high and hearing the po po coming for you. Not fun. I couldn't get into it back then.
― The Once-ler, Friday, 30 October 2015 17:09 (ten years ago)
wait that's not solid snake 2. it's twin snakes, a remake of metal gear sold.

agreed. also i just got to skulls and ran away. mission complete! felt pretty lame. took me like a half hour to get inside the base and suddenly "prisoner has died" dark souls is a cakewalk compared to this
― am0n, Friday, 30 October 2015 17:52 (ten years ago)
yeah i find it highly frustrating.
― doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Friday, 30 October 2015 18:01 (ten years ago)
Fuck a bunch of mission 45. Kind of don't feel like struggling through to finish the game - I really enjoyed the basic open worldness and sneakiness and the early missions where you're learning new skills and working up strategies but then you start getting all the good tech and buddies and it gets a lot easier to push through missions and they all get pretty samey until you hit the two roadblock missions where it's just BLAST SHIT HOMIE.
Afghanistan Central Base is my favorite location - tons of ways to screw up and get caught but a lot of room to be sneaky and eliminate people before anyone notices. All of Zaire/Angola is underdeveloped - you get dropped into the village and have to find out about child soldiers and maybe shit's getting notched up then 90% of the missions are at remote outposts that are just the Afghanistan outposts with greenery.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 1 November 2015 08:43 (ten years ago)
there's a big African base that's pretty sweet, full of little bridges and shanties and swamps. it's where one of your targets goes if you're not quick enough hunting him down. (I wasn't because I was intent on Fultoning every living and non-living thing in sight)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 1 November 2015 13:37 (ten years ago)
so there are a lot of missions in this game, is what i'm getting
― ♛ LIL UNIT ♛ (thomp), Sunday, 1 November 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)
possibly ... too many?
Yeah it can feel kind of bitty. It might have been better to have like 10 missions on the scale of the GZ one with a few smaller ones sprinkled in. Still an awesome game though. And the smaller missions allow you more time to fuX0r with your base and your sideops and your combat deployments (if that's your bag)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 1 November 2015 14:03 (ten years ago)
the two tanks mission is fuckin hard.
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 15 September 2015 00:33
jsdafklds fucking took out the commander stealthy, attached c4 to both tanks stealthy... apparently that doesnt work? fuck this game
― am0n, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 15:47 (ten years ago)
you might need two c4s each... iirc they are on the move, right? i think i put the c4 where they were going to roll and popped it off when they rolled over
― nerd shit (Will M.), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 16:10 (ten years ago)
is this Backup Backdown? i think it takes 3 to blow up a tank. do that and use a rocket launcher or grenade launcher. if u run out, call in an ammo resupply.
also you only need to destroy one tank to complete the mission. it has a very unforgiving checkpoint system though and you can make it through the entire thing and then fall and die and have to redo the whole thing again.
once you get the vehicle fulton and ant-vehicle mines it becomes a completely different mission.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)
Just started doing FOBs in earnest and they are a BLAST. Anyone wondering where the big bases are in this game that hasn't checked out FOB needs to. It's like MGS2 on steroids.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 17:20 (ten years ago)
Tanks missions, I'd bring Quiet and have her tranq or kill the support and then sneak up and Fulton the tanks. Got way too easy once I unlocked the wormhole Fulton.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 02:07 (ten years ago)
i don't have quiet or d-dog or tank fulton unlocked. should i not be doing the main missions in order? also the tanks end up parking at a base so im just crawling up to them
