the pre-BG games are out now too

http://www.gog.com/game/forgotten_realms_the_archives_collection_two

that's the best collection imo. vol 1 has the eye of the beholder games and vol 3 has the underrated menzoberranzan. i don't know where the ravenloft or al-qadim games are, those are good too.

adam, Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

heh, i think this is a "how old are you" question

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 August 2015 15:59 (ten years ago)

my stepbrother gave me a 5 1/4" disk with hillsfar on it when i was in elementary school. it's basically thief meets red dead redemption meets skyrim, at least in my memory.

adam, Thursday, 20 August 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

calstars, Thursday, 27 August 2015 23:19 (ten years ago)

Still need to play Thief 3.

Purves Grundy (kingfish), Friday, 28 August 2015 06:30 (ten years ago)

three weeks pass...

Warner Bros Studios titles on massive sale this weekend. Get Shadows of Morder GOTY for like $20.

Also Call of Duty series. I've never actually played MW1, and that was $10, which seems worth it.

Purves Grundy (kingfish), Friday, 18 September 2015 20:26 (ten years ago)

Shadows of Mordor is fucking amazing, especially at that price - it's my personal favorite expression of what "next-gen" means to date (MGSV be damned)

has anyone done Steam and/or NVIDIA Game Streaming? I'm specifically interested in field reports of using Moonlight, which purportedly lets you stream your entire controller-supported library over your local network to an iOS device in Big Picture Mode and automatically using any connected MFi controllers as input devices to control everything. right now it's only available for jailbroken devices (and GeForce cards of 650+, which I have) and I haven't jailbroken a device since iOS, like, 5 (although this is kind of a blessing in disguise since I only have to JB iOS 8.1 or something), but if I can break my iPad and get this set up, I can basically play my entire Steam library using a combo of my iPad mini plus my Gamevice, which is unquestionably the single greatest present you can buy yourself if you have a mini and an interest in playing games with actual buttons and a terminal case of more money than sense.

that + Plex = being able to engage with all the media I use on my PC from anywhere in the apartment

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Saturday, 19 September 2015 04:54 (ten years ago)

I guess you're still kind of up shit creek when it comes to stuff which doesn't have a good controller mode, but then again I ended up finally beating Diablo 3 on PS4 so it's definitely possible to bolt a usable controller interface onto a system which by all rights should have nothing to do with this sort of thing

So that I don't...

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 18:02 (ten years ago)

RE4 and Remember Me were added to the Capcom bundle, making it a very good one.

Beat the average (around $9) for
RE4
RE5
RE Revelations 1
RE Revelations 2 episode 1
DmC
Lost Planet 3
Remember Me
Strider
Bionic Commando Rearmed

i might bite on the hope that in the next year I'll finally get a new Mac/PC that could possibly play these games. a good chunk of thise was given away for free on PS+ already though

i am honestly in a place where my time is more valuable than playing a game to find out if it's fun
this is a novel position for me, i'm not sure what to do about it.
*downloads anyway*

Grim Fandango Remastered on Steam's Halloween sale for $5 (I think? I see £ not $), so don't buy the Humble Weekly Bundle for $13 just for that like I sort of just did

oh well, it's a good cause and I wanted Escape Goat 2 too. nobody tell me how cheap that is on Steam right now though

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 29 October 2015 22:09 (ten years ago)

Not sure this is the best thread but my bff has a steam greenlight game up at the moment for votes, procedural/roguelike murder mystery fun, check it oot.

four weeks pass...

big steam sale. thinking about getting the following (but haven't pulled the trigger yet):

NEO Scavenger: $14.99 $7.49
Elite: Dangerous: $44.99 $14.84
Dungeon of the Endless Pixel Edition $11.99 $4.07
Reus: $9.99 $1.99
Avernum: Escape from the Pit: $9.99 $1.99

thoughts on any of these? is elite dangerous good?

Mordy, Friday, 27 November 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

I gave NEO Scavenger 15 minutes, couldn't get over the interface which was like something out of the early '90s. YMMV though, see the video

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2015 17:39 (ten years ago)

that's the one i'm most sure about - i played the demo and loved it. how about elite dangerous tho?

Mordy, Friday, 27 November 2015 17:41 (ten years ago)

Yeah I was tempted for Elite Dangerous too, but my gfx card seems to be huffing and puffing lately so I'm holding back.

Others I've eyed up:
Stick of Truth
Cities Skylines
Call of Cthulhu

Whilst browsing now I've found one I'm certainly pulling the trigger on
Grim Fandango remasterd for £2.74

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 27 November 2015 22:06 (ten years ago)

elite dangerous is insanely gorgeous but i'm not sure there's any more to it than flying through a narrow space station entrance into a cavernous spherical room encrusted with landing pads and saying "wow" over and over again. an upcoming patch will add, like, moon buggies, which will also be completely awesome, for a while. nb tho i never got anywhere in previous elites either; just said wow a lot.

i did once show first encounters to some youngs and they loled heartily over the my-first-3d graphics until i took off and flew away from the planet and just kept flying until i was in space, and then they were like OMG WHY DON'T THEY MAKE THIS NOW, and i can confirm that they did.

denies the existence of dark matter (difficult listening hour), Friday, 27 November 2015 22:12 (ten years ago)

i can also confirm that when i play it i vocalize all the calls to my clipped female computer voice's responses

denies the existence of dark matter (difficult listening hour), Friday, 27 November 2015 22:18 (ten years ago)

ha, that's great. So did they get around to adding planets yet?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 27 November 2015 22:24 (ten years ago)

planetary landing I mean

the "horizons" expansion just went into beta, but i've been imprisoned by fallout 4.

denies the existence of dark matter (difficult listening hour), Friday, 27 November 2015 22:26 (ten years ago)

yeah that's the thing - w/ fallout 4 it's hard to feel like i need any new video games but if elite dangerous is good i'm sure i'll want to get to it at some pt (btw neo scavenger is great)

Mordy, Friday, 27 November 2015 22:41 (ten years ago)

is that you playing now? (mshinefi)

is neo scavenger finished?

Least appetizing Steam sale ever? I miss drowning in 75%, 80%, 90% off discounts.

Nhex, Saturday, 28 November 2015 22:14 (ten years ago)

That's probably what the Christmas sale will be like.

Haven't bought anything this time around, though I'm kinda curious about Endless Legend. Since I've not had any interest in playing anything other than Binding of Isaac Rebirth (and Afterbirth) for the last three months, I don't really see any point in buying anything at the moment. Also, I have quite a few unopened games left from the summer sale.

Enter nothing in the dialog and click 'OK' (Øystein), Sunday, 29 November 2015 00:47 (ten years ago)

I got the First ep of Life is Strange, all of Krntucky Route Zero, and v cheap Grim Fandango and Gods Will Be Watching

huh, I hadn't noticed three of them were adventures. maybe even the last is, after a fashion

thwomp (thomp), Sunday, 29 November 2015 00:53 (ten years ago)

afterbirth is so good

Mordy, Sunday, 29 November 2015 00:54 (ten years ago)

so I've been spending the weekend (a) blowing my usual ridiculous wad o' cash on way too much stuff and (b) trying to get comfortable with the Steam Controller. gonna talk mostly about the latter: it has a downright vertical learning curve since using touchpads is completely counterintuitive to thumbs trained over decades to expect analog sticks or buttons, but the more comfortable I get with it, the more I like it - ESPECIALLY the fact that it lets you rebind any input to whatever makes most sense to you. the community has already come up with bindings for a bunch of stuff, too, meaning it's FINALLY possible for me to play Sid Meier's Pirates on the goddamn couch again. plus it makes whole new genres easily playable, most specifically point-and-click adventure games and 4x/turn-based strategy games. so far, Civ V is hella fun using it (even if the text is really small) as is FTL; I also bought Pillars of Eternity [who already released official SC bindings] but I wanna get a little more comfortable with the controller before I commit to learning what I understand is an extremely complex game.

the controller is also surprisingly tactile for something that looks and feels like a cheap piece of shit at first glance: the touchpads give good haptic feedback, the squeeze-buttons on the back are a godsend (they're basically a fixed version of the Vita's stupid rear touch panel), and from reading the reviews the trigger buttons are maybe the best stock triggers on any controller this side of the legendary Xbone Elite Controller.

tl;dr: if you're willing to invest the time either to find a useable binding from the community (which isn't hard at ALL) or to put your own bindings together, the Steam Controller can make an ungodly number of formerly KB+M-only games playable from your couch. it's not as good as a "proper" controller (e.g. an Xbox/bone piece), but what it lacks in immediate ease-of-use it looks like it makes up for in potential play opportunities it creates. I have both (plus a Tuact Aimon for when I really feel like driving myself bonkers) and it seems like a really good setup.

also ever since I upgraded to W10 I discovered that all the games which used to drag ass on 8 suddenly work perfectly well; Wolfenstein, Shadows of Mordor, and even Witcher 3 run way better on my PC than they did on either of the two nextgen consoles. now I just have to wait for IDARB's long-promised Windows 10 launch and I can finally rest easy.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Sunday, 29 November 2015 05:52 (ten years ago)

also also, one of the games I picked up was that Jack Box 2 deal someone mentioned over on the PS4 thread; I got the Steam version since it was cheaper , but if the Twitch & play-from-a-device features are legit we should def get an ILXor game going at some point

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Sunday, 29 November 2015 05:57 (ten years ago)

Steam games I bought

Broken Sword 5
Her Story
Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, because I just read the novel
Divekick, which I have on PS+ too
Ys I and II Chronicles+

I haven't played any 3D (polygonal) games lately so I'm not buying them now.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Sunday, 29 November 2015 13:29 (ten years ago)

her story looks great

i probably don't need to buy divekick, do i

thwomp (thomp), Sunday, 29 November 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

i think Divekick is worth $2 for the idiotic laughter it will bring you, if you're into that sort of thing
Torchlight II getting a mere 50% discount at $9.99. It came out in 2012, and has been Humble Bundled!
tempted by Her Story tho, damn this recent spate of '90s FMV nostalgia

btw thanks for the Steam Controller review james, def interested in takes

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Wednesday, 9 December 2015 04:10 (ten years ago)

so tempting for the +41 to my Steam account

Nhex, Wednesday, 9 December 2015 04:27 (ten years ago)

I splurged on it; that's a solid price to legit own digital licenses to a bunch of ROMs that are fun as fuck to play with my arcade stick, but the majority of the games in the bundle are either formatted as standalone DLs or games that run in a browser window. the only Steam keys are for Metal Slug 1, 3, and X + King of Fighters '98 and 2000.

man I've been wilding out buying games from Steam et al lately; it's mostly just because I finally have a pretty solid complement of controllers to use (Xbone pad, Steam Controller, MadCatz TE 360 fightstick, and a really good Saitek HOTAS setup I got for cheap pretty much just so that I can finally play TIE Fighter and the X-series on something other than a keyboard. (Elite: Dangerous was also cheap in the Thanksgiving sale, which I chalked up as a second reason to just spend the money already dammit James. in any event I just got the stick & throttle yesterday so I am still squarely in the "how do I make this thing work with Windows 10 in the first place" stage of the relationship; I'm sure reports will follow once I figure shit out.)

I doubt that the winter sale will be quite as ruinous to my bank account, but I'm hoping for a few games to get decent price cuts - really just Dragon Quest Heroes, Hard West, Trails in the Sky SC, and the enhanced Baldur's Gates since they apparently work really well with the Steam Controller (which at this point I recommend without reservation to anyone on the fence about one; if you commit to the learning curve built into this thing, it will give you a chance to play a whole bunch of games again. plus the thing keeps getting more functional every day the more the community uses it. my biggest gripe with it is that it doesn't work with GOG's launcher yet AFAIK, which is a shame because I would love to play something like Master of Magic or Ultima 7 on my TV from my couch with this thing if they'd just support the kerfungled thing). but then again the attitude "pfft, there are only a few games I want this Steam sale anyway" is legally admissible as proof that the person who said it is both crazy and an idiot, so stay tuned for updates, I guess.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Wednesday, 9 December 2015 09:03 (ten years ago)

Or (like me, sigh) that they've just bought WAY too much stuff in previous sales/bundles and so there's only a finite amount of non-shit stuff left to even want.
