best bit: where he nearly gets fucked up by the wagon wheel skeleton dudes

Neil S, Thursday, 23 July 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

i still have the free Games W/Gold version of this sitting on my hard-drive but I have not yet touched it. Dare I?

I am p shitty at video games tbh

yeah, definitely. in a lot of ways i find the difficulty level of the souls games much easier to take than others because pretty much every time you die you'll know exactly what you did wrong and have an idea of what you might be able to do differently the next time. it's tough but fair, and it's a great teacher - you'll find yourself coming back to areas you struggled with before and breeze through them because you've become a much better player in the interim.

bizarro gazzara, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:25 (ten years ago)

also, dark souls is flat-out the most atmospheric and engaging game i've ever played - it's worth giving it a shot just for the experience of exploring the world

bizarro gazzara, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:26 (ten years ago)

yeah just give it a try stevie, being good/bad at games is p much immaterial, no one is waltzing thru these games, but i think most ppl who try find the core gameplay fun enough to mitigate the frustrations until you have more of a handle on it.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:30 (ten years ago)

one more thing: if you find you're not getting on with the game, try another character build - it's amazing how much putting points into different stats can palpably affect the experience of playing

bizarro gazzara, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:34 (ten years ago)

okay, cheers dudes, i shall go on in later this week!

liveblog please

Neil S, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:39 (ten years ago)

yeah, reading about new players navigating their way through souls games is endlessly fascinating to me - post yr impressions!

bizarro gazzara, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:40 (ten years ago)

deadblog more like - will def get back with details once i'm in the dungeon!

Credit: howtokeepapositiveattitudedotcom (stevie), Monday, 27 July 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)

Nice one! My tip FWIW: it's tempting to build a warrior/knight "tank" character, upping your stamina, strength and endurance but it's more fun to play the game as an agile character or a mage. But y'know follow your heart!

Neil S, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:54 (ten years ago)

not just more fun but more effective. certainly for DS1 i think that, rather than stat build and equip to take more hits, you need to learn and build to not get hit at all. somethings will 1-hit you however beefy you get.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:57 (ten years ago)

it'd stand you in good stead if you ever get around to playing bloodborne too

bizarro gazzara, Monday, 27 July 2015 13:58 (ten years ago)

Yes plz liveblog, your first time through a Souls game is amazing! If I could offer one word of advice, it's to avoid that cemetery with the skeletons until you have pretty much run out of other places to explore.

My magic character is currently stuck in The Duke's Archives. The combo of crystal warriors and projectile mages is too much to handle, I can't even run through it.

It looks like they made it to the 2nd bonfire in the Undead Asylum. This does make more sense than the guy that beat the game with voice controls.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 14 August 2015 04:58 (ten years ago)

It seems like the automated nature of the controls will make blocking nearly impossible.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 14 August 2015 05:00 (ten years ago)

been watching this for an hour or so. They're never getting out of the Undead Asylum.

Neil S, Friday, 14 August 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)

I got nowhere with this game and got fed up with it. Sorry guys. This is not my bag.

Credit: howtokeepapositiveattitudedotcom (stevie), Friday, 14 August 2015 14:57 (ten years ago)

it's def not going to be for everyone. you can't be blamed for trying it and not liking it, but having it on your computer for free and not even trying it would've been an invitation for a mob with pitchforks and torches showing up at your house at midnight.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 14 August 2015 15:13 (ten years ago)

I tried it and gave it up and then went back to it a year later before it finally clicked.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 14 August 2015 15:21 (ten years ago)

not deleted it yet! and glad i tried it - i can see it being awesome at scaring the shit out of me, if i didn't always get killed before i could even get scared

Credit: howtokeepapositiveattitudedotcom (stevie), Friday, 14 August 2015 15:40 (ten years ago)

The secret is that you need to look at the game as an extended and complicated puzzle, not a survival horror or adventure game. Every situation in the game has at least one "right" way to be done.... And often many more... And each right answer leads to the next, often in successions of twenty or more. If that sounds arduous and pointless, this is not the game for you. But the rewards if you get in the groove are SO viscerally enjoyable and the mental map of the space feels more real than my memories of high school.

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 August 2015 16:37 (ten years ago)

Actually, that sounds lots of fun. But a 15-month-old running about the house and a massively impoverished amount of spare time as a result suggests I might not be able to give it the proper attention within the next few years!

it's sort of the perfect summation of all the depressing, lonely aspects of DS

Neil S, Monday, 17 August 2015 09:49 (ten years ago)

ok i get it now, and that is insane.

it's sort of the perfect summation of all the depressing, lonely aspects of DS

well said, it's a pretty good simulation of a player having gone hollow.

Perhaps the funniest moment of the stream so far was when Twitch Plays Dark Souls equipped an item called the Darksign. When deployed, Darksign allows you to sacrifice whatever souls (aka experience points) you’ve accrued during a run in exchange for showing up at the last bonfire (aka save points). Twitch found itself unable to do anything but keep using Darksign.
