Ah didn't realise this was I Love Games, probably more of a ILE thing.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 12 March 2015 11:37 (eleven years ago)

I was into it for a bit last year, but feel like there was this metagame strategy that people figured out quickly...

Nhex, Thursday, 12 March 2015 13:55 (eleven years ago)

i played letterpress a lot when it was new, but only every once in awhile now.

polyphonic, Thursday, 12 March 2015 15:45 (eleven years ago)

OMG mr jump is so challenging and SO FUN!! seriously it's like aging a brand new nes game, the ones where you die 40 times before you beat the level

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 20 March 2015 01:11 (eleven years ago)

1010 was fun, but then got old. Unless I'm missing something besides "this is like tetris except you can't rotate anything."

pplains, Friday, 20 March 2015 02:05 (eleven years ago)

My kids are getting good at Geometry Dash and it makes me feel old. That game is ridiculous.

schwantz, Friday, 20 March 2015 04:34 (eleven years ago)

my son really likes Geometry Dash too. It's ridiculous how patient kids can be with games like this.

silverfish, Friday, 20 March 2015 18:25 (eleven years ago)

Watching him play is like watching one of those tool-assisted speedruns.

schwantz, Friday, 20 March 2015 18:38 (eleven years ago)

RED ALERT: if you have even a passing interest in the civ games, especially civ rev, you should check out the new sid meier Starships game. i'm playing the iPad version and it is has been addicting. it's $15 for the iOS version so i'm guessing most people will wait. it's also on Steam.

who is dankey kang (Karl Malone), Saturday, 21 March 2015 18:34 (eleven years ago)

vietnam '65 looks amazing - $10 iOS tho so i'm gonna wait till it's discounted

Mordy, Saturday, 21 March 2015 20:59 (eleven years ago)

really did not enjoy device6. found the writing awful and got to the first puzzle and had no interest in carrying on. am i missing something here, is it worth persevering with?

NI, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 22:05 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I didn't get Device 6 at all. I preferred Yearwalk, from the same people.

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 22:08 (eleven years ago)

NI - if you don't like the first part i don't think there's any point persevering. i liked it - at least whiling away a mentally disengaged wet afternoon. more limited than yearwalk tho.

Yearwalk had that great way of delivering hushed-snow spookiness - the way they used the navigation and landscape gave a great sense of strangeness - finding things as in a dream.

really like the invention of both.

I HAVE DEFEATED I AM LEVEL

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 01:38 (eleven years ago)

Haha this post is like a message in a bottle from Victorian Britain.

fields of salmon, Sunday, 19 April 2015 02:19 (eleven years ago)

bought myself a Horipad for my birthday; it is a shockingly good gamepad. solid buttons, quality d-pad, decent sticks, and superb ergonomics.

also this game which snuck onto the App Store is a bunch of emulators (SNES, GBA, NES, and Genesis to be specific, all MFI compatible); if you're on any IOS below 8.3 you can apparently add any ROM you want:

http://afterpad.com/post/116954273145/new-release-homebrew-indie-games-multi-system

I'm on 8.3 so I can't verify this, but I picked it up anyway in case someone figures a workaround out down the line; these apps don't typically stick around the app store for very long.

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 22:06 (eleven years ago)

correction, I downgraded to 8.2 and will now figure out how to get hella roms on my ipad

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 23:14 (eleven years ago)

this definitely works perfectly. you will also need to install iExplorer on your computer in order to drop ROMs in the app's document folder. if you're on 8.3, it's still possible to downgrade your iOS to 8.2 since Apple is still signing those installations (for now); here's the guide I followed:

Oh shit... Does Not Commute

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 24 April 2015 12:32 (eleven years ago)

Anyone else playing Dominations?

Mordy, Friday, 24 April 2015 14:29 (eleven years ago)

i want to know the name of the map game

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2015 14:30 (eleven years ago)

it's called "Maps of Our World"
basically they show you a labeled map and then quiz you to tap the right space. it keeps meticulous track of how well you do and then mercilessly drills you on the ones you keep missing.
$10 unlocks all the countries and capitals, 178 mountain ranges, 33 deserts, 100 seas, 500 rivers and an additional 1200 cities along with political maps of Germany, UK, Switzerland and the US
It's been one of the better buys I've made for the ipad quite frankly. Still having a hard time cracking Africa and Oceania; need to set aside some time.
Once we knock out the complete country list, we're going back for capitals and then cities. Probably start working on mountains and seas and stuff sometime in 2016. The upside is that things tend to stay the same; if we take five years to learn this, I think we'll have to relearn a handful of countries but this is good foundational knowledge.

i had ZERO geography in high school or college and it's a point of some embarrassment that it's so difficult to visualize where, say, Brunei is.
But no longer!

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 April 2015 16:37 (eleven years ago)

I'm playing Dominations, Mordy.

And also Does Not Commute, which rules.

polyphonic, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)

How can I add u poly?

Mordy, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:53 (eleven years ago)

No idea. I'm Miguelito on there though.

polyphonic, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:55 (eleven years ago)

Maybe I need to repair the ally gate first

Mordy, Friday, 24 April 2015 17:56 (eleven years ago)

probably easier to add through gamecenter. i'm josephcotten there

polyphonic, Friday, 24 April 2015 18:15 (eleven years ago)

is dominations pay to play / war of clans / wait for the timer to tick down so you can do something style?

Karl Malone, Friday, 24 April 2015 18:17 (eleven years ago)

yes, however it's designed by brian reynolds who worked on civ 2, alpha centauri, and frontierville - the last one of these games that i actually enjoyed (and i think voted for in c+p)

Mordy, Friday, 24 April 2015 18:26 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i'll probably check it out based on his involvement alone!

Karl Malone, Friday, 24 April 2015 18:32 (eleven years ago)

Because of the timer tickdowns it does feel like progress comes a little slow, but now that I'm winning multiplayer matches and my defense is holding off attackers better I'm starting to feel a bit invested. The main thing is that I only play it for about ten minutes per session. I have more room in my life for that sort of game lately.

polyphonic, Friday, 24 April 2015 19:32 (eleven years ago)

maps of our world only available for ipad :(

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 April 2015 20:40 (eleven years ago)

ah, i was tryna find it for iphone and ?

irl sweatpants (Hunt3r), Friday, 24 April 2015 21:10 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah, i dunno about for phones.
GeoBee Challenge also fun but different.

Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 April 2015 21:25 (eleven years ago)

i gave dominations a fair shot, but deleted it last night. i had made it to whatever age lets you pick a country (i went with the germans) and i played a few multiplayer battles and was working toward reaching the little alliance dock area, but i just wasn't having any fun. also, the nagging thought of pay-to-play - yeah, i could join a league and try to rise up through the ranks, but won't i just get wailed on by a bunch of people willing to spend $15 on stuff?

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 13:42 (eleven years ago)

Eh not really afaict the only pay to play is you can pay to have things finish quicker (tho the game gives you plenty of premium currency for free ime) but you can't like buy unique items w crowns.

Mordy, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 16:25 (eleven years ago)

I'm almost up to the Medieval Age. My defense has been holding up pretty well, and I tend to win my multiplayer matches for the most part. Of course if someone from the Enlightenment Age creeps in they're going to annihilate me but they get a lot more money if they attack someone closer to their level. Haven't spend any irl money yet.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 18:23 (eleven years ago)

Civ Crafter is another similar game that I've been playing. Also free. Build up your town and then fight other towns or whatever, with some clicker elements. This one in more of a Minecraftish visual style.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 18:25 (eleven years ago)

One thing I like about Dominations that you can watch replays of the attacks, win or lose, so that you can refine your defenses. And when you attack people you can see how they've set up their town and steal ideas from it.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 18:29 (eleven years ago)

If they ever manage to port a paradox grand strategy game to tablets I'll never play another game again
