Forgot to look into the room in Darkroot Forest that is past that huge gate you have to spend 20,000S to open. I opened it a while ago and use it as a bank (there is a trick you can do to fool some valuable enemies into jumping off a cliff) but never explored it. I love this dark forest, it might be my favorite looking area of the game. At any rate I came upon a huge wolf and got into a pretty tough fight, dying a bunch, but slowly figuring out how to handle it. All this time I am thinking this is a boss or something, because he is so tough. The first time it killed in just a few hits. The next time I started off really strong doing about 1/3 damage right in the first dozen or so moves between us, but the wolf does this thing where it rolls up into a ball like Sonic the Hedgehog and goes shooting across the forest, doing massive damage even with my shield up.
Third time I am winning! The giant wolf is down to 1/4 health, when all of a sudden..... comes.... another giant wolf! Dammit! Is this a dual boss battle or something?
I am in the zone so I roll out of the way, dodging both of their attacks, and miraculously manage to take down the first wolf. Then out of the mist.... comes.... a third wolf! And hell, why note, a fourth wolf too! Three giant wolves tearing me to pieces! What a surprise!

When that third wolf's head peaked out from the evaporating soul of the first one, that scared the shit out of me. My favorite experience in the game so far.

pretty sure those are...cats.
― lil urbane (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:20 (eleven years ago)
i mean, when it's a giant wolf, you'll know it.
― lil urbane (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:21 (eleven years ago)
best way to deal with the cats is to find out where their boundaries are on the map and then peek out, hit em around a bit, fall back, heal, repeat.but you have to be on the right side of the map.lol at jordan. giant wolf.... eventually.

OMG these damn snipers in Anor Londo!!! Is this the hardest part of the game?

1000x yes. Especially first time through.

Learning to parry can help, but the part of the game that's perfect for practicing parries is...directly afterward.
― lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 16 March 2015 02:30 (eleven years ago)
haha, Adam, this video of yours is a nail-biter. missing the first bonfire in Anor Londo, just barely surviving the gargoyle, and then, well, i won't ruin the last couple seconds for anyone else.

Haha yeah it was really late and took me forever to take down the Iron Golem, so I just wanted to go to sleep after that gargoyle =)
Made it past the snipers last night! Time for a crash course in parrying...

props dude, the last few seconds of that fight are super tense. this is where i admit that i've never beaten O&S properly solo. i think last time i at least had Solaire, or maybe a human helper who died midway through.
i also never beat Gwyndolin. the run back after dying is too annoying.

I'm in the Duke's Archives, a sprawling, baroque, ruined library filled with wizards and the crystallized undead. Is there whispering coming from the books? It is mixed in very low under the constant drone of the wind. It does feel like a library at the end of the world. I climbed up a very long ladder, and at the top there was an archer waiting on a ledge opposite the tower. We engaged in a bow-and-arrow duel, the controls allowing me to dodge, strafe, and roll while aiming. I win the contest but with one hit to spare, as is usual when not dying altogether. The moments where you cheat death in Dark Souls are so much more gratifying than in other games.

AGGGGH.
I just tried opening a chest and it turned out to be a mimic, which is a frightening monster that can instantly kills. I had been attacking treasure chests for a long time now, to the point where I got tired of it. I slipped up and the first one I didn't check got me!

Leveled up my intelligence and magic so I could use Cast Light and the Pyromancies. 100 hours in and I am starting to use magic for the first time! I made it to the first bonfire in the Tomb of Giants, and have explored a little but am now stuck. It looks like the only way to go is into a tomb with giant (duh) skeletons, who I've been picking off one at a time and certainly don't feel up to the task to taking down a half dozen in such close quarters. Maybe there's another route...
Wish the difficulty wasn't such a high barrier, this game does so many things right by minimizing all the crap that has been piled on of games since the start of 3D (and before). There are no barriers to entry, no invisible walls. No pause button, either, hah! No map -- and I love this so much! No markers. No quest lists. When you talk to an NPC your character isn't frozen in place like a mannequin, you can just walk away if you want. No QTEs. The character creation section is ONE SCREEN. Amazing. If Zelda is The Beach Boys then this is The Ramones.
I got to a safe spot earlier after clearing out a bunch of giant skeletons and went to go get some water, and when I came back, I had died. The game is relentless, something the missing pause button gets across VERY CLEARLY. Sometimes I will die and start to plan out what to do while it is loading, and the loading screen is so short that the game immediately comes back up, that gong sounding off, the ritual begins again. The game commands your attention.

i think for this section i learned where the enemies were and then ran past them all. totally valid strategy imo.

I've been unable to take down Lord Gwyn so far. He's the most difficult boss of the game imo. Started a new character thinking I would breeze through a bunch of the game. LOL NOPE
Tried some of Dark Souls 2. It runs way better than DS1 (both on PC). Some of the changes seem really weird. For instance all the enemies just not re-spawning anymore after you've run through an area a million times. Not that this makes it any easier.
― ©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 3 April 2015 15:21 (eleven years ago)
Did your copy of Dark Souls come with the DLC? If so, I would absolutely run that before you beat Gwyn. It's a really solid add-on and getting to it is gonna be a bit of a pain if you take him out.
― circa1916, Friday, 3 April 2015 15:47 (eleven years ago)
Gwyn is so hard, you really have to get used to his timing to parry him consistently (and then remember to avoid his grab).
On my second character I did go through the game much faster (until the DLC content, which you should really get if you can), but Gwyn was as hard as the first time and I gave up rather than put in the time.
xp

the community put together a really nice patch for DS1 on PC. fixes most, if not all, issues people had with the port.
