just got a 5-star mall by y9 m7 w4; felt like I just coasted and that so many of all of the little intricacies (adding features to stores, hiring ppl based on the types of stores that they boost, having sales, escalators and elevators and most of the facilities, etc) were entirely inconsequential, which makes it seem like a pretty flimsy game

― Jennifer 8. ( (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 19:37 (eleven years ago)
yep. i've played 4 or 5 different kairosoft games and they all feel the same. there's always a nice golden age of playtime about 2-3 hours in (or 3-5 "years" into the game i guess) where things are really fun, and then it just fizzles.
game dev story and the rpg ones were my favorite, but that mainly just comes down to subject matter preferences.

I was hoping for something as engrossing and complex as SimTower but either a) I was much younger at the time and it actually wasn't all that complex or b) this game is just a really watered down version

at least some of the others have that weird diagonal-grid layout like RollerCoaster Tycoon so I'll pick up one of those and maybe it'll be fun... what's the RPG one? Like Epic Astro? That was what I was gonna get next.
Game Dev is cool! But there's really quite little to do, ultimately.

this may lean too far in the other direction of complexity, but you might check out pocket tactics.com, specifically their reviews section and best of 2014 and 2013 awards. they might lean a little bit too much toward wargames and WWII simulators and stuff like that, but they also review a good amount of unique strategy/tactics games that you probably wouldn't hear about otherwise.

The thing I especially liked about Hot Springs was that it was kind of a feng shui game ... it's really about placing the right objects near each other to make the space more harmonious, as well as trying to find a balance that appeals to different demographics. It's not deep in implementation but the idea is really fun imo. Mega Mall and the restaurant one borrow some of those ideas but Hot Springs does it best.
I always wanted to try Oh Edo Towns but never got around to it. Anyone played that one? Or the cruise ship one?

The thing I love about it is that it's constantly changing. You're basically a different character every day. Recently they introduced a bunch of australia-themed characters. If you use the kangaroo it can actually jump a little farther on the log sections. If you use a wizard he's constantly setting things on fire. I dunno, it's the best.
I think last night I jumped from the 150 range to the 220 range.
