Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

The shield thing still makes no sense to me. If gamergaters are the ones being attacked, wouldn't the women and people of minority status they're claiming to represent be their weapon, not their shield?

I know this is completely trivial and not really an issue to anyone but me, but it still bugs me.

to these people racism and sexism don't actually exist, they're just "-isms" to deflect "criticism"

they don't think that it's all white knighting dudes but definitely doesn't go deeper than "white knighting dudes and shrieking white feminists putting words in the mouths of everyone else" which is easy to think if you never actually listen to anyone else

the reason all-encompassing pejoratives like "SJW" are so effective is that they allow the people who use them to decide exactly who falls within that range. it's harder for them to argue against an actually-diverse group of people than a bunch of self-righteous liars just using that diversity to prop themselves up on their high (white) horses.
