Why is casual racism/sexism more accepted in video games than other forms of media (these days)?

my main takeaway from all of this is that games, like most things, are a perfectly fine hobby as long as you aren't a worthless piece of shit about them

secondary takeaway is that it would be very difficult for me to give up games entirely but if that was the price I had to pay to punitively punish all of these horrific dumbfucks, so be it

xxp my experience is that MMOs (and strategy games even moreso) are a somewhat separate sphere where these people exist in fewer numbers and/or milder forms. i've definitely created a mental connection between gamergaters and AAA studio games (especially shooters), maybe falsely, but the behavior on display throughout this whole ordeal is much more extreme than anything i ever encounter as a gamer

I've poked at GamerGate for a couple of weeks and only gotten a couple of nibbles off of it
