lol "there are many games that feel wrong to play like candy crush but dark souls feels RIGHT"

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 February 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

heh, i also think about the game world to fall asleep.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 February 2014 16:13 (twelve years ago)

interesting comments about the new mechanics as well

Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Thursday, 20 February 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)

there was some article that quoted him as having put 1800 hours into Dark Souls, which is O_O. i mean, they must have meant to type 180, right?

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 20 February 2014 16:23 (twelve years ago)

this is pretty good, hacker w/ unlimited health gets demolished by the forest

pvp is still such a mysterious world to me

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 21 February 2014 00:08 (twelve years ago)

Yep. Probably the most esoteric part of the game. Still learning new things about it.

Fresh thread for DS2 because nobody else was doing it:

Dark Souls 2: YOU DIED HARDER

circa1916, Friday, 21 February 2014 03:18 (twelve years ago)

good title

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 21 February 2014 13:45 (twelve years ago)

does anyone here use a lot of magic? talking to a friend who played as a sorcerer it's like we played different games. and his sounds way easier.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 21 February 2014 17:30 (twelve years ago)

i'd say the 'best' way to play the game is as a devoted magic user with a maxed elemental weapon in the first run through and a maxed magic/faith scaling weapon in later NGs

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 21 February 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

i've never played a full on magic user (most i've done is level up faith or int for weapon buffs) but i have heard they make the game significantly easier.

circa1916, Friday, 21 February 2014 18:18 (twelve years ago)

i carved out tonight to play.
two immediate options now: iron giant and sif.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 26 February 2014 21:33 (twelve years ago)

i got through the duke's archives (felt very proud of myself for going back and rescuing big hat guy) and just started on the crystal cave. had a very dark souls moment when i tentatively walked to the end of that first pathway, didn't see anywhere else to go, thought maybe i could fall down to the butterfly below and YOU DIED.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 February 2014 21:44 (twelve years ago)

okay, beat the iron golem with some help, completely cleared out the painted world except for the boss. Trying to be nice. That was really fun. So here we are against the archers...
Working on levelling for a change; finally got everything up to *16*; i'm sure for most of you that's laughable but it's a big step for me and my level 51 dude.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 08:45 (twelve years ago)

fuckin' archers, I'm level 115 or something stupid on ng+ wearing Havel's Armour, and they STILL knock me off the ledge

Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Thursday, 27 February 2014 09:21 (twelve years ago)

the tumor-headed firebreathing poison people in the Painted World really remind me of Half Life 2.

Seath went down on the first try last night! thankfully, since it took me more than a few tries to get through those oysters with legs. and admittedly i read up enough on him ahead of time to put on all my curse-resistant gear (used lautrec's armor and the cursebite ring).

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 13:42 (twelve years ago)

xp to Neil. For the archers, I generally find it easier to strip down to fast-roll weight, sprint up there, head right, roll thru the arrows, engage the knight. If you're lucky he'll fall off when pulling out his sword.

Also, xp to forks, would recommend specializing more with yr stats. Like choose STR or DEX depending on what weapons you like to use and how they scale. Although some ("quality weapons") do scale on both. If you're interested in casting choose between Magic (Intelligence) or Miracles (Faith). Pyromancy is kind of a cool/weird path because it doesn't require any Intelligence or Faith stat investments, just some points in Attunement to open up spell slots. Resistance is pretty much useless, avoid that altogether. Vitality and Stamina are always worthwhile, can't go wrong there.

circa1916, Thursday, 27 February 2014 14:19 (twelve years ago)

can't decide i'm going to start off DS2 with the same type of character i've gotten comfortable with (strength-based, heavy armor, big shields & swords) or try something new. although it sounds like you'll be able to reshuffle your stats mid-game somehow, so maybe it doesn't matter.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:58 (twelve years ago)

i think my dex is at 21 and strength is at 19. I will likely start focusing stats from here on in, but wanted a base of 16 to 20 for all of them just in case that ever presented a barrier.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 18:04 (twelve years ago)

i had to up my dex to 18 just to use the black knight sword, which was totally worth it as it's my go-to for all situations not involving ghosts or skeletons that put themselves back together. other than that i've pretty much ignored all stats besides stamina and strength (and early on i was putting everything into vitality, which seemed important at the time but was probably not the best use of those levels).

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 19:18 (twelve years ago)

man i've been stuck with the drake sword forever. I leveled it up to +3 and that's 260 damage... hard to step away from that.
black bow of pharis is kinda dope too tho'.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 19:33 (twelve years ago)

black knight sword +5 = 330 damage :)

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 19:38 (twelve years ago)

man we are nerds

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 19:38 (twelve years ago)

no apologies
i wonder if i have the black knight sword... should check my inventory. I get attached to my gear and have a hard time changing, especially when I can upgrade to match general enemy levels.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 20:03 (twelve years ago)

likewise, although i've been better about changing my armor and shield for bosses. got the black knight sword as a drop after having the crow take me back to the asylum.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 20:11 (twelve years ago)

20 strength eh? i'd have to grind a bit before riding with this...
been considering trying the catacombs again with my Divine +5 Cutlass / Divine Bow +3, dunno if it's a waste of time

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 20:25 (twelve years ago)

also REALLY not sure I even have the black knight sword and killing those fuckers is always a production number.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 20:26 (twelve years ago)

i play without a shield btw
― i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, June 27, 2013

well have i got the mother of all pro-tips for you
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, June 27, 2013 5:18 PM

btw, this was totally true! i reached a point where playing without a shield was gonna be a nightmare and maybe impossible with the build i made and that's why i ended up quitting. Months later I returned, remembered this note, started playing with a shield and had a MAJOR forehead slapping moment.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 20:39 (twelve years ago)

haha.

i can only beat the black knights through parries, which, you know, can take a few tries.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:04 (twelve years ago)

lol, can't imagine trying to play this game through the first time w/out a shield.

circa1916, Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:09 (twelve years ago)

(also, srsly, you gotta retire that Drake Sword now)

circa1916, Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:10 (twelve years ago)

I favour the claymore and so I've tried two-handed but I find it only works in certain circumstances.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Thursday, 27 February 2014 21:10 (twelve years ago)

people HATE that drake sword

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 February 2014 22:36 (twelve years ago)

hollows HATE him

am0n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 22:51 (twelve years ago)

I have a Black Knight Greatsword +4; accidentally used my twinkling titanites on upgrading that instead of the normal BK sword, then thought fuck it, might as well spend an afternoon getting my strength up to 32 so I could pick the cunt up

it carves everything into mush in 2-3 hits tops but the hits are veeeery sloooow

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 27 February 2014 22:53 (twelve years ago)

I was one hit off killing Super Smough with it last night then accidentally drank an Estus flask while he was doing his death buttslam

since then I have been further and further away from being able to beat them as my in game and irl humanity dwindle alarmingly

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 27 February 2014 22:56 (twelve years ago)

The Silver Knight Straight Sword is nearly as powerful but a lot easier to wield.

Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Friday, 28 February 2014 09:37 (twelve years ago)

balder side sword

am0n, Friday, 28 February 2014 15:48 (twelve years ago)

will second that. love the balder side sword.

circa1916, Friday, 28 February 2014 15:55 (twelve years ago)

i actually like the speed and move set of the regular longsword. i was happy getting +5 lightning on one of them. i did one build with a chaos greataxe. that was really brutal, and so different to play

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 28 February 2014 16:04 (twelve years ago)

longsword is also good, claymore too. using the latter in demons souls currently, moveset is different but that stagger is still there

am0n, Friday, 28 February 2014 16:13 (twelve years ago)

bed of chaos time. i've been falling into assorted holes.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 28 February 2014 17:51 (twelve years ago)

i did it! it's done. final dark souls blog:

-i was all psyched up for pinwheel after finally getting through the catacombs for the first time, and the intimidating cut scene, and then he went down in one hit! i was almost disappointed.

-then nito was the exact opposite - finally made it through the tomb, feeling good, and then i died one second into the fight (before even seeing him) via giant sword coming up from the ground. same thing happened the second time. i read on the wiki that he doesn't like light, and even though i wasn't using the lantern i unequipped it and, just to be safe, the cloranthy ring which kinda glows. probably dumb and unrelated, but the next time he didn't do it and it was an fight easy.

-died many, many times against gwyn until i got comfortable enough to stay close & parry without getting grabbed (nothing else worked for me, target shield helped a lot too).

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 3 March 2014 16:25 (twelve years ago)

nice, feels good to parry gwyn doesnt it. did you do the artorias dlc?

am0n, Monday, 3 March 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)

no, i thought about it but didn't end up bothering. if DS2 wasn't coming out in a week i would definitely have done it before beating the game, or would be going for it with a new character (i don't think i'm a new game + type of dude).

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 3 March 2014 17:23 (twelve years ago)

dude, feeling very behind.

PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 March 2014 18:20 (twelve years ago)

congrats tho
