Ah, makes sense, thanks.

I figured it would just be one large PvP murder fest. I wish there were consequences for that, tbh. I'd much rather do cooperative tasks with people. On that note, I joined the ILX crew.

yeah, online mode is pretty glitchy.

i waited 10 minutes for other opponents to show for the intro race, only to be matched up with only Lamar (AI). then in the first mission, as soon as I grabbed the dropped drugs, the world shifted to daylight, then back to nighttime, made me invisible, let me look around for a little bit from a fixed location, warped me to the middle of dimension X24E, gradually let the world populate around me for 20 seconds, floating around in another dimension again, and then was warped back to the beginning of the mission again

sounds like a saint's row 4 mission

ah, bit my own joke. sr5, sr5.

there seems to be a glitch where online mode dumps you back into single player way further into the story than you actually were, like with at least one major plot event skipped, just happened to me but still had the save file from before, be careful out there kids

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)

uh oh, literally just 1 minute ago (before i read this), i was kicked out of online and was back into single player (as trevor). i just shut down the game (quasi-rage-quit) - hope i didn't get skipped ahead somehow!

reckless woo (Z S), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)

I'd saved it as Trevor wearing a terrible suit and a luchador mask in his house, and when it kicked me back from online today I was Michael wearing sweatpants in the desert, started getting phonecalls about story missions that made no sense for where I got to (50.4%)

I think you're OK unless you somehow saved over your manual save file, but not sure if that'd even be possible unless you were ignoring the mission phone calls and driving a long way to your safehouse

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

Grrr, I guess I'm not playing online tonight after all. I'm only about 40% of the way through, and I don't want to jump ahead.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:02 (twelve years ago)

it's not a big deal if it happens (imo) - like biscuits is saying, you still have your old save state you can hop into

reckless woo (Z S), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

but it might be worth waiting a few days anyway for the online problems to be fixed. it's pretty unsteady right now.

reckless woo (Z S), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, not a big deal. I just hope R* fixes these server stability issues by the weekend. I may be a little delusional though.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:10 (twelve years ago)

Playing a bit more it had basically skipped me ahead of the next main story mission and inconveniently lumbered me with Michael

I think I like the bits where the score goes full on 1.0 Klaus Dinger motorik even more than I like the bits with the unnerving synths

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 21:37 (twelve years ago)

I'm finding that exploring on foot in the city is a better way than driving to get your bearings in the world and check out all the detail that's gone into this game.

GTA Online is cool once you finally get in

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 05:01 (twelve years ago)

round of applause for that trevor mission in the docks moving containers and climbing a crane for being the worst GTA mission of all time and probably the worst gaming mission of any game ever of all time. everything shite about this game in one tedious badly-written 20 minute bundle of anti-fun

NI, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

I thought it was a tribute to The Wire S2

20 minutes? I think it took me 5 which is probably why I'm not butthurt about it.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

that mission was kinda fun i thought, sorta sims-y or something

also the game was pretty to look at during that mission

the worst mission in this game is easily towing cars

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

I tried getting online a few times yesterday evening, but never got beyond the intro scene. Once Lamar dropped my character off to get my own car, everything would just stop.

I've only recently finished the first heist. I was a little underwhelmed with it. I hate how the game makes you do these missions only one way. If you go off the rails, so to speak, you instantly fail the mission. I'm hoping the heists open up later on.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

what's that recent game that's all heists? i love the idea of it, but it sounded like it's only fun if you're doing multiplayer.

payday 2 apparently

Yeah, that's the big bottleneck. Once you get to the point where you pick your car for the intro race (right after that point) you should have no further issues. Once you've finished the tutorial, getting into online is actually very easy. If you keep trying you'll eventually get it.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

i dunno, i ran into repeated issues after the tutorial, although i'm going to give it another shot later today.

i'm more concerned about the actual gameplay experience. as soon as the tutorial ended, i was in a car, and the other human player who was with me during the tutorial was standing right in front of me. so of course i immediately ran him over and he died. then 3 seconds later someone shot me in the face and i died. as soon as i learned how, i turned passive mode on (at the cost of $100, no biggie), and then as soon as i turned it off later, i was murdered.

PvP is fun for some people i guess but i'm not really that into it

reckless woo (Z S), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

There's lots of non-PVP stuff, or stuff where you're competing with other people to complete a task rather than just murdering each other.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

And lots of races and other fun stuff.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

Also the tutorial is longer than you might think it is. You don't really get into the real game until after you've dropped your first car off at Los Santos Customs.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)

20 minutes? I think it took me 5 which is probably why I'm not butthurt about it.

you think wrong, 'broccoli', takes 5 minutes alone to drive back from the docks to floyd's house, another 5 minutes to watch the thigh-slapping cutscene of the guy covered in shit, etc etc. but yeah, the tow truck sidegames are dreadful though, not least because it's the first or second female character you meet and yup she's a conniving shrieking crackhead, what else would she be.

Slo-mo lobbing of explosives at helicopters was A+

bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

Passive mode bugged me because you have to turn it off to use a gun at all, so if you turn it back on to do a holdup you're seemingly at risk of being murdered by the very dickheads you're meant to be collaborating with

That container moving section was so funnily boring I thought it was meant to be an extended rib, they should've had that awful camera view of some different-sized moving rectangles be the first gameplayer trailer just to bask in all the 8000 word thinkpieces about what this all means from the gaming press

random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)

This happened in my first holdup. My friend had collected the money and I accidentally brained him with my pistol when I was trying to shoot the cashier. To me it's part of the fun but it's definitely a good idea to roll with dudes in your crew you can trust. It's very easy to steal another player's money.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

haha yeah that would've salavged it. i was playing it like this. thing is, i was angrily rushing through it because it was bugging me so kept screwing up (disconnecting trailer from truck) and also spent an age trying to work out how to pick up the boxes because i'd clicked through the instructions in a fit of pique. my own dumb fault but still: UGH

NI, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

yah i thought that bit was annoying-charming for some reason.

I punched him! I think it's either you leave him alone or nothing, as far as the story is concerned. Same thing happened when I kicked the paparazzo guy in the ass. I wish I'd known; I would have either left them alone or got more creative about it.

antexit, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

continually checking BAWSAQ while I'm at work may be the shittiest thing a game has ever made me do btw

WHY DIDN'T I BUY PISSWASSER AT $4

antexit, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

How did y'all know to jump on Pisswater and HAL in the first place?

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:40 (twelve years ago)

i don't understand how it can just go up continually anyway? it doesn't correct/reset??

goole, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:48 (twelve years ago)

HAL's high is $49.44, and it's currently at $16.09, so there's still plenty of room for it to rise, hypothetically.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

Same for Pisswater, which had a high of $148.66 and is now at $17.54.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean either will go up.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)

HAL and Pisswasser were two that were set very low at launch, for whatever reason, and people have been pump-and-dumping them on Reddit. HAL was $1 originally, so why not buy it. I believe the highs for each stock listed are not reflections of where the stock has gone in the last two weeks but just fictitious histories of the stock's life overall.

Of the two, HAL is supposed to be a weapons manufacturer, so it could wind up being tied to something that has actual value in online, through DLC or whatever, that just hasn't been realized yet.

antexit, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

I really really really wish I hadn't done the assassination missions. :(
