New PS4 controller is supposedly a HUGE improvement over the prior versions. Bigger, actual triggers, better grip, better thumbsticks.

oh, so the PS4 will be less expensive than the Xbone ? I would have thought the other way around.

PS4 has better specs, Xbone is more expensive because of mandatory Kinect2.0

OK, so no suprise (almost) everybody will get a PS4 then !

in the first couple of years games will probably look v similar on both machines, PS4 might have better framerates. later on when programmers get more used to the tech PS4 games will start to look better. Xbone will probably sell well in the US & UK to people locked into Xbox Live via 360 who are used to gaming with their friends, the rest of the world looks pretty set to go PS4 though.

isn't it suicidal from MS to have the Xbone 100$ more expensive than the PS4 ?
If I remember well, Sony had reduced the price of the PS3 so that it wasn't too much more expensive than the 360.

I'm an Xbox man. Always have been. But I think I'm going to buy a next gen system today and everything is telling me "PS4"...but it feels wrong to switch now.

there's really not much to choose between 'em at this point - xbox one is maybe better as an all-round media player, ps4 is still usually (marginally) better on resolution / framerates? i guess it comes down to which controller you prefer and which system has the more attractive exclusives.

(and, if multiplayer matters to you, where most of your friends will be playing, i guess)

I was going to say the same thing regarding the lack of DLNA (which irritated me to the point of upgrading the firmware on my TV so I could use it), but apparently there was a media player update earlier in the year that added DLNA for PS4.

buying a ps4 this week - i was xbox the last few gens but i was always playstation before that.

do i dare ask the "what games do i get" question here? i was going to start with metal gear, and then maybe pro evo for old time's sake, after reading the new one is good. possibly the last of us. after that not sure.

actually was just xbox for the 360. never liked the controller.

Bloodborne and Batman are both p great, the former in particular is essential

what I be mostly playing (bought my ps4 two months back) - Last Of Us, Witcher 3, Wolfenstein New Order, Rocket League, Destiny, Rayman Legends

get a ps+ sub for sure, it's a fun way to get new stuff monthly.

So i picked up the "Military Appreciation Bundle" yesterday, which came with Last of Us and NBA2k15 (and an extra controller). I got Bloodborne, Destiny - Legendary Edition, Metal Gear Solid V (I also bought Ground Zeroes online...which I just beat...in like 2 hours), and Assassin' Creed Lolity.

I was reticent because I disliked the PS2 so much but this is a pretty impressive system.

there are people out there who hate ps2?

i didn't like the PS2 either (or the PS1 for that matter), got on the board with the later systems

Yeah. The only PS4s they had were the Destiny Taken King White Special Edition and this "Military Appreciation Bundle", which is just a regular PS4 with a big American flag on a slip box cover. But it came with those two games and an extra, camo design controller. And 3 free months of PSPlus, which I take is standard anyway. Same price though.

worth it for the free controller and Last of Us, even if they lamely include last year's NBA game

you can get a good 20 hours out of MGS:GZ betw all the difft modes and objectives

in some ways it's kinda a better, more refined/concentrated MGS:V

Thanks for the heads up on the military appreciation thing- I'm still pricing out bundles for an eventual buy in the next few months, and that looks like the best deal by far (especially since i can sell the NBA game). Dunno why both this and the regular The Last of Us bundle don't include it on a disc, though.

man oh man do I love the XBOne controller; if it's not a game I'll be cross-playing on mobile I'll buy it for Xbox simply so that I can enjoy that fantastic controller. can't wait for the PC adapter to come out in November so that I can use a wireless one with my HTPC .

Has anyone seen if there's going to be a PS4 bundle with a 1TB drive that doesn't require paying an extra premium for a Call of Duty game and a ridiculous black-and-orange console?

Or - get a good deal on a 500gb system, buy this 2TB external drive, crack it open and stuff it into your PS4, voila 2TB PS4

p awful user experience that you get a new ps4 and as you try to play it it endlessly keeps downloading updates and patches for the game you want to play. with about 15 clickthrough menus about update 1.001 or whatever. guess i'll watch tv while patch two downloads for another 20 minutes.

Yeah, that has been my experience since I got it. Extra controller is a must. These babies can't handle my marathoning.

i had to get fifa with it as it was cheaper than without - but i intend to get the new pro evo and maybe trade fifa in. i got metal gear solid - will probably get dentistry or perhaps batman also.

any of you have the new pro evo? i'm LOCALGARDA if so - literally just turned it on.

i only played the first 2 but i hear the 2nd is the best of the series so i feel confident in my determination that they are... not great games.

Yep it looked bad. Scorpio sounds great on paper - but what games will there be for it? Xbox exclusives lineup seems fairly week, and unless they have a ton of stuff in the works, I have a feeling
that people will upgrade and then wonder why... reason being that most third party developers are going to develop for both the PS and Xbox platforms at the same time, thats just how it works financially, so it seems like the only major advantage to Scorpio if it doesnt have major exclusives would be improved framerate and resolution on those cross-platform third party games - which is great of course... but why not just get a PC?

crackdown 3 is the only thing i'm looking forward to this year, but i'm looking forward to it a lot - the first game was one of my favourites of the last gen

I played thru LIS 1 on the PS3 but have been wary of LIS 2, is it comparable in terms of quality?

I forgot to mention I installed and played thru the first hour or so of Yakuza 0...seems ok so far but not totally sold yet

I've only done episode 1 of both Life Is Stranges. I know the second one didn't resonate as much with fans of the first, but I found it pretty moving. Maybe too corny for some.

Yakuza 0 really shines with some of the goofier side missions and mini games, IMO. The cabaret club game totally derailed me from the main storyline.

I feel like this chip shortage might end up giving my xbox one a slightly longer shelf life in terms of developers not wanting to release stuff only for next-gen consoles :)

Yeah they’ll release games for the prior gen and they’ll run badly and then they’ll apologize to the small number of complainers or whatever

I sold my XBox One X thinking I could get a PS5 this spring to play Tony Hawk and MLB.

I know they couldn't have predicted the chip shortage (is this the same shortage hampering car production?), but it really feels like they rushed the release of PS5 and nu Xbox. Like, it could have waited a year to have the same impact, imo.

it seems like 6-7 years in the standard gap between Sony systems ('94, '00, '06, '13, '20). I agree one extra year would've been fine

not sure where the general gaming thread is but... i have to vent. picked up an xbox one s & controllers this week for ~150 quid... and this has been the most miserable gaming experience of my life.

this is my first modern console, after only ever playing PS2 growing up. I spent over a week creating accounts, typing in passwords, entering payment details, accepting privacy agreements, signing up for subscriptions, and hours of installing games overnight... but the select few games I wanted to play just won't run...?

forza horizon 4 hangs on launch, as does burnout paradise; other discs inexplicably stop installing halfway and get stuck (forza 7, FIFA, PGA Tour); some 360 titles won't run without a specific hard drive; the HDD is just about full with only around 4 games (!)... other games have crashed in the middle of playing... and the third party controller we bought has been disabled by microsoft!

all of this has just completely put me off... is this what modern gaming is like?

barring the hangs and install issues that sound like some sort of hardware problem, all the rest is par for the course

consoles peaked with ps2, now they have all the drawbacks of pcs and few of the advantages

I had to set up an xbox account for my daughter, using my existing but entirely abandoned and long forgotten account as the family account, and it nearly killed me.

i dunno. i have had a ps4 and still have the xbox one (it's at a relative's house). the installing games thing is annoying but it does mean *much* faster load times.
i don't get how logging into an account is a huge pain. you have to do that to post on ILX
Also it's very easy to plug in an external usb drive to these consoles if you're running out of space. They both support it

Yes it's a more PC like experience but let's be honest it's nothing like as much of a faff than running a windows 11 gaming pc and you don't pay nearly as much for the machine

Also I've played Forza Horizon 4 and multiple versions of Fifa on the xbox one and they ran just fine - so yeah you've likely got a hardware issue

i had suspected a h/w issue, yeah... i'm going to return the console to the second hand shop and see about an exchange. such a frustrating few days. it was a gift from my wife, we just wanted to game together... have recently read pages and pages of users having issues with several new titles inexplicably crashing, though, h/w issues or not... i'm really busy with work all week and want some escapism in the evening. it should be fun, not hours of maintenance, online updates and privacy agreements.

idk. some modern indie games i've played have been a blast (life is strange & firewatch to name two), but many titles - perhaps moreso the physics - in this era of gaming feel sluggish, bloated and visually confusing to me too, in comparison to 6th gen and before. there's so much information on the screen at once, so many menus and settings to wade through...

...i think i am just getting old at 32yo!
