Why do people think the music in the Final Fantasy games is so good?!?

Why do people think the music in the Final Fantasy games is so good?!?

I've only heard the music from FF X, but I liked it because it seemed very incidental and unassuming. It didn't get in the way and held up well after constant replay.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Did the FF guy do the music for Xenogears, too? I always like the "underground/dungeon/explorey" themes that japanese adventure/RPGs have...

seriously! is there any chance of a tracklisting dodongo?

rio natsume, Saturday, 1 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah! the bit with the mario 3 "I just beat the boss" music!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 October 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I know I'm typecasting myself here but, the SimCity 4 game music is really nice. They actually brought in a full orchestra to record some pieces. And some others are done by dudes called the Humble Brothers; their peices are great! "Metropolis" is really cool. I listen to the SC4 tunes when I'm working sometimes. Good background music.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 October 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

Did the FF guy do the music for Xenogears, too?

It was Yasunori Mitsuda, who also did Chrono Trigger (with the Final Fantasy guy) and uh, Tsuganai: Atonement.

I fucked up the sound quality on the nintendo mix somehow when I finished it. It was edited together using Cool Edit 96 (registered to PhRoZeN cReW 97!!!!) and I somehow saved it wrang. It's gotta be cleaned up!

when i play (s)nes games on my emulator i always turn off their sound and listen to mp3s. old game music is interesting as a nostalgia trip only.

I finally started fussing around with some of the cooler audio options for Snes9X on OS X. The Large Chamber reverb sounds awesome! Now if only I had time.

I got mp3 downloads of the themes to a couple of my Gamecube games from nintendovip.com when I registered them. Not that the theme music to Mario Golf is that exciting, but I thought it was an interesting move on their part.

I like that song from FF6 that sounds like Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.

one of the ocean loaders for the C64 was sonically perfect. kingfish is right: i think my love for the SID chip explains my love for M83 :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 November 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

There's a wee loop of background music in mariokart ds that plays while you're waiting for people to come and join your online game. I've had it quietly running in the background for the last 20 minutes or so, and it's not got tired at all, it's exactly the sort of sweet backgroundy midi music that nintedo have always been great at.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

There are some pretty nice almost micro-housey tracks for the ice/snow levels of Metroid Prime on the gamecube.

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

The only good thing about Xenosaga, and it is pretty awesome, is the ambient synth techno jingle that plays when you access the Unus Mundus Network on the main character's little PDA thingamabob. A bizarre Miyazakilike white rabbit thing floats and bobs up and down on the side of the screen while this music just loops, and it actually feels cool and futuristic and imaginative for a while, then you get back to the actual game part of the game and wham, abundance of boring, unappealing crap.

rio natsume (rio natsume), Friday, 2 February 2007 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

I really honestly feel that if you switched the OSTs of KD and WLK people would just say the exact same thing about the music being not as good and sounding unremarkable.

OffTM. The true litmus test comes from my girlfriend, who has never played either game, but loves the soundtrack of the first game, begged me to download the soundtrack to WLK, and then was really disappointed in it when she finally heard it. We still listen to the first soundtrack pretty often.

What about the world map music for Dragon Warrior I (NES)? It wasn't the greatest, but it looped so often that it's pretty much etched into my memory forever.

i totally tranced out to the wii menu screen music earlier while trying to connect to wifi. it's beautiful, ryuichi sakamoto is clearly still a huge influence on game music.

Ah I cba arguing with GZeus any more he's an ok guy. I think Oblivion has some great music especially the re-worked Morrowind theme(I don't know or care if it was used in previous Elder Scrolls games so please don't point it out).

Darramouss is nice now (Darramouss), Friday, 2 February 2007 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

Wilfred Castillo makes awesome music using a gameboy emulator. (click on the music link at http://www.snoopdroop.com/). Listen to You're a Hero on Level Zero and tell me i'm wrong!

I went thru a period of using Zelda sound files for all my mobile phone rings and alerts (receiving a text made the Treasure Chest ditty :D)

It's amazing isn't it.

If you leave the menu on, and play some music on your hifi it almost always appears to blend into whatever track is playing.

Wow I'm an idiot. I was listening to the LOGIN music. Or something. Hence the quality.

Will M., Tuesday, 10 April 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

the sacred grove music from ZTP when you have to chase that weird little doll with the quadrophonic horn around has been stuck in my head for about 48 hours

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

every once in a while, my brother will start singing one of the songs from bust-a-groove. that game sure was fun.

i'm just a complete sucker for that motif when in the 5 chord the 5th steps down to the 3rd. there's for sure something in earthbound like that too. foundational!

i mean, i like the idea but it's so big! You'd have to do it by eras. How do you compare Pac Man interstitial songs to the soundtrack from Journey?
