which MK had the Afghani guy who could drop through the bottom of the screen? that's the last one I played. it was fun. yep!
― Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)
Afghani guy?! i have no idea what you mean! was it 3d polygons?
― Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
Also wasn't this one of Kano's powers?
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:45 (eighteen years ago)
apparently his name was Kabal. and apparently he wasn't necessarily Afghani, but from a dusty land, and perhaps even a desert. maybe he was Bedouin?
― Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)
Couldn't one of the robots in 3 drop through the floor too? forward forward lowkick or something?
― antexit, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)
Arcades died when home systems were able to meet and more or less surpass cabinet quality graphics/sound/design.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:04 (eighteen years ago)
Now, the only stuff that works to keep arcades alive are "event" games, like where you go skiing... for realz! Dance Dance/Beatmania used to keep it alive, but now that people have shown a wii/guitarhero willingness to buy peripherals, that well is mostly dry too. It's down to kiddie bullshit (whackamole, skee ball, treasure claw) and retro stylee arcades to carry the torch.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:06 (eighteen years ago)
Kabal was the MK3 character I'd always play as...he looked like a tusken raider from Star Wars

― HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
he was my guy in MK3. which I only bought due to loneliness and depression.
― Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)
i wasn't allowed to have it or play it due to overparenting. but i bought allll the magazines for 1-3!!!
― Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)
oh god I was in college for I and II, I old
― HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)
nothing wrong with that! means you got to play them when they were cool. if games were ever "cool" anyway
― Will M., Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:18 (eighteen years ago)
MK2 had cool death moves and level design but actually sucked shit to an amazing extent when you were actually playing it
I mean, can run through SF2 from time to time and enjoy it but MK's just like a series of awkwardly blocked punches and annoying shouting noises
Deadly Alliance was good

Even the fonts in MK3 were lamer... it is silly how the controversy after MK1 made it so they avoided bringing back the spine-ripping until MK4.
― Nhex, Saturday, 15 March 2008 19:28 (eighteen years ago)
Also LOL at both that weird ass Fatality you picked and maskless Sub Zero.

it just wasn't believable anymore

uh, MK vs. DC is really damn good! Granted I haven't played a MK (or any non-Smash Bros fighting game) in like 13 years, and I am solely interested in the DC stuff, but this is both fun and solidly put together. Feels like a true MK despite being 3D. And Captain Marvel's Kingdom Come lightning blast move is awesome.
dude, this totally sounds like a gamestop user review.

that sub-zero was the hottest sub-zero. and the robots--cyrax, sector, smoke--were all awesome

I feel like I could write some funny Zizek-esque explication of that clip, but I'm too tired right now to think. But how about this; We expect Jared to die in the first sequence when Sonya has thrown him off the cliff, but he subverts our expectations and throws her off instead. But, because the medium feels guilty for mocking our expectations (and MK is all about obvious payoff), Jared must still die to Jax in the next sequence. This both revenges the feminine (Sonya), but also sets everything right once more. We expected Jared to die and so he must die. This is, in fact, the meaning of Mortal Kombat. Subtlety is eschewed in favor of gore and fatalities (for which the series was critiqued historically) - it's not merely an adolescent fantasy world, but a fantasy world about completion and expectation. What happens is what always must have happened.
This is, in fact, why the friend-alities are the most subversive aspect of MK. Except, of course, for the baby-alities. (Contrast this to the DC world where storylines and comics extend for hundreds of issues over decades. MK V. DC is actually a battle between completion/resolution and unending non-linearity.)
― Mordy, Friday, 21 November 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
they are called FRIENDHIPs
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)
The truth is, I always sucked at MK because I couldn't remember the really complicated moves.
― Mordy, Saturday, 22 November 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)
i just ordered mk trilogy for playstation (i just got a ps2 for free so am buying some games for it). i hope its as good as i remember playing it in the arcades (and not a weird revamp). wondering if i should gt mk alliance.

IMO MK2 > UMK3 > MK > MK3
the rest, haven't played
― mh, Monday, 11 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)
UMK3 added back some stuff that was good with MK2, but by then the franchise had already turned and a lot of people had walked away before it came out.
imo ultimate MK3 > MK ultra

it has:
2-3 really nicely staged and executed scenes2-3 performances with enough charisma to carry the terrible dialog (though sadly not the lead guy who is basically one of derek zoolander's model friends enlisted to act)3-4 moments that will make you go yesssssss if you have any affection at all for the games1 very funny, subtle-enough callback to the gameplay of the first couple editions that should make you smile
as an object of IP care and feeding it does more than enough
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 25 April 2021 03:59 (five years ago)
so cheesy, total fan service. story very clunky, but as B-grade schlock, good!
― Nhex, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:51 (five years ago)
Sounds good to me. I am a fan of the very silly '95 movie and was worried this was going to be like a Zack Snyder take on the IP
― feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Monday, 26 April 2021 13:00 (five years ago)
yeah I just assumed that what this movie was gonna be so I didn't have much interest in seeing it. if it's ridiculous and stupid I might watch it after all.
― frogbs, Monday, 26 April 2021 13:09 (five years ago)
there are some funny moments but i was frequently bored. suffered from a lack of lambert. all the casting is terrible imo.
― adam, Monday, 26 April 2021 15:34 (five years ago)
Watched it last night. While it *was* stupid, it also wasn't very much fun outside of a handful of the fight scenes. I feel like this property would be better served Netflix Castlevania-style as an OTT gory animated series.
