This was just so good i may have to watch it again tonight.

LOL at the moment where Billys's colleague (the one he confronted about the fake hiscore) is talking to the camera about what a great guy Steve Wiebe is, and Billy's reaction is priceless.

Ste, Thursday, 27 September 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

Just watched this last night, and it's so good. Mitchell is such a cock! I'm sure they've done the film in a way to deliberately make Wiebe look like a great guy, which I'm sure he is but he's obviously every bit as competetive as Mitchell, just not as much of a bell end.

BTW, I checked Twin Galaxies and I actually have a pretty competetive high score on the Gameboy Tetris. Is it lame to be tempted to submit something? :(

CraigG, Friday, 28 September 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

Do it!

marmotwolof, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Totally not lame, i'm tempted to get my Outzone up there, because the current champ is nowhere near my best!

Ste, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

I've beaten the NES Marble Madness Top Score a few different times. I suppose I should tape it. But, there's not much competition for that score. I haven't scored below 100,000 points in a game of Marble Madness since the 1990s, which would automatically put me up on the list.

Z S, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

OH MY GOD

Abbott, Friday, 28 September 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

this has nothing to do with the film but this was shown at before the movie at the theater i was at. AWESOME:

G: When you broke the Donkey Kong world record and your score was verified, how did Twin Galaxies and Billy Mitchell respond?

TS: Shortly after my record WAS VERIFIED, Walter Day, and Billy Mitchell himself, called to congratulate me. I find this to be in stark contrast as how I've heard Billy is portrayed in the movie The King of Kong.

Holy shit, there's a MAPPY champion in this movie! That's like being Official President of the Family Circus Fan Club.

Abbott, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

Hahaha I totally forgot that I have Mappy on a Namco comp. I think I've played it on there exactly once.

marmotwolof, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

mappy champ is a bro

chaki, Monday, 8 October 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

I missed the boat on this, it is no longer in the theater here :(

Jordan, Monday, 8 October 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll have to wait for the DVD too.

marmotwolof, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

So the new episode of South Park is clearly meant to be a sort of homage to this film, but instead comes off as a sort of half-hearted poop-is-funny rip-off.
Discus.

two months pass...

Results 1 - 10 of about 10,700 for billy mitchell asshole. (0.21 seconds)

Eric H., Thursday, 10 January 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

at least 8,500 of those are me, though

Will M., Thursday, 10 January 2008 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

and this: http://spyhunter007.com/steve_wiebe_donkey_kong_timeline.htm
in some ways, the fact that this has created a tempest in a teapot sort of underscores the obsessive geek nature of everyone involved, no matter how peripherally.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Dude in the first link just sounds way jealous.

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Watched this last night. It was pretty good, but I guess I was mildly disappointed. How many times did they play "You're The Best"? Like twelve? Also, enough with the line graph animation. They used it like a million billion times.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

this movie ruled

s1ocki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

the crazy thing about billy mitchell is he's like the only alpha male in the entire retrogaming subculture so he can just completely dominate and cow everyone else involved.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

this was on my top ten of the year

Abbott, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

AVC: What if I sent you a copy of the movie, and you watched it and then we could chat after that? And you could directly address some things…

BM: You can't send me a copy of the movie. Number one, it's not out on DVD [Editor's note: This interview was conducted before the film's recent DVD release.], so what you got, you can't send to me. I could have gotten it a long time ago illegally. And I'm not gonna do that. But I think you're gonna have a hard time believing the fact that I kinda know everything about the movie, since every day I open my computer and reviews are forwarded to me, including video clips and all that. Plus, I got a good memory.

I guess he did the BBS documentary. Huh. I think I exchanged a few emails with him many years ago when he was putting that thing together.

multiple xposts but i think i used to have a damned good score relative to the twin galaxies range @ gameboy tetris too!

anyway mostly this makes me want to somehow be recognized for how hard i would wreck anyone at nhl '94 for sega. we used to play it as a drinking game in lol college

johnny crunch, Friday, 15 February 2008 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Is Billy wearing eyeliner? Is he wearing teethliner??

JimD, Friday, 15 February 2008 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

If he never washed, and he shaved, he would look like Nick Cave (but with patriotic ties).

Abbott, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

some of wiebe's meathead friends in WA were awesome. "i told him not to get chumpitized and to go out east"

johnny crunch, Friday, 15 February 2008 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I just realize Billy Mitchell has a bottle of his own hot sauce on the podium. I understand the urge to show everyone your hot sauce, but c'mon - leave it in the cabinet.

Z S, Friday, 15 February 2008 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Billy's passion for hot sauce is actually his most endearing characteristic, to me.

Jordan, Friday, 15 February 2008 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Billy should play the bad guy in the new Tron film, just to stir shit up.

Ste, Saturday, 16 February 2008 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

it would be awesome if he took little sips of hot sauce in between sentences

this movie was so good

i prefer the 80's version of Mitchell

Ste, Thursday, 21 August 2008 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

Did anyone see the South Park about whether Bono or Stan's dad had taken the biggest crap? Was this supposed to be a play on King of Kong?

Abbott, Thursday, 21 August 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

I thought it was just a big piss take of Bono

ah sorry, you should have been more descriptive with the episode - but I kinda agree with you if that helps.

Ste, Friday, 22 August 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

That was the last episode of South Park I watched; quality seems to have finally fallen off.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 22 August 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

Pretty messed up. I've met Mitchell a couple times at retro gaming conventions, seemed nice and happy to be there and meet people. More than anything, I admired him for his wing business and sartorial eccentricities. It's sad that it was all built on lies.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 13 April 2018 03:35 (eight years ago)

so why didn't he just submit these as emulated ?

In space, pizza sends out for YOU (Ste), Friday, 13 April 2018 11:53 (eight years ago)

Well there’s chances of save states and game hacks that subtley produce more favorable results when using an emulator.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Friday, 13 April 2018 12:20 (eight years ago)

That is to say people trust original hardware submissions more. Emulator submissions will always be looked down upon as not being equivalent to the real thing so most people just avoid them.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Friday, 13 April 2018 12:36 (eight years ago)

plus I thought the tape was suspected of being spliced together from (presumably) dozens of runs. idk if they've proved it yet though

of course, that's not really the way life works in general

frogbs, Friday, 13 April 2018 12:38 (eight years ago)

his gameplay footage gets way too "lucky". when there are random points awarded, he never gets the lowest ones. (the stuff about audio breaks is not true -- savestates make splices invisible.)

adam the (abanana), Friday, 13 April 2018 13:06 (eight years ago)

Omnigamer's Power Point Slides

The luck slide #14 is interesting but I don't suspect his scores were really that far off from normal. Omnigamer also didn't call it a smoking gun or anything in the presentaion video.

Also in slide #22 he states Myths going around. The idea that video splicing occurred is one of them since no credible evidence has ever been found.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Friday, 13 April 2018 13:14 (eight years ago)

but yeah.. save state splicing can be a thing etc...
