xp yeah, i can't help but wonder what kind of recourse ppl have if they just never deliver the product. class action suit???
― Mordy, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 03:31 (thirteen years ago)
I suspect that people who are fed up with waiting for things either try to obtain refunds from the project organizers or, failing that, from Kickstarter or Amazon.
― the physical impossibility of sb in the mind of someone fping (silby), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)
crap, forgot that the only the first 25,000 donators got that free copy of Project Eternity for $20. ah, i'll chuck in $25 once it crosses 1.6 mil
― Nhex, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 03:56 (thirteen years ago)
Kickstarter's policies on refunds are "GTFO" in blazing 20-foot-high letters, iirc.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah they don't care, and in fact it's against their business interests to want to refund money.

What, FTL? I will. Worth it.
― Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Friday, 21 September 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)
i don't know if other kickstarters are like this, but i'm really impressed at how often obisidian emails me w/ substantive + interesting updates about the progress of the kickstarter, the choices for game design, etc.
― Mordy, Friday, 21 September 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)
we should make a fake one of these for half life 3 and get rich biatch

FTL looks really cool. Maybe I'll buy it off steam this weekend.
― Mordy, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
it's on mac. always makes me more likely to grab it
― Mordy, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)
I pledged to Project Eternity. They announced they're using the Unity engine, which likely means a near-simultaneous release of the Mac versions (and probably future iOS/Linux versions as well)
I owned 4 out of 6 games in the latest humble indie bundle, so I really really fight my instincts to buy these cheap indie games now

Project: Eternity at $2.16M now, and the highest stretch goal currently listed is $2.3M
― Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Monday, 1 October 2012 04:22 (thirteen years ago)
so Project Eternity keeps getting bigger and bigger
Stretch Goals Met - Player House, Mac, Linux, DRM-free option, French, German, Spanish, a Bigger Story, a new faction, 2 more classes, 2 more races, and 3 more companions. All added.Next Stretch Goal - Expert, Trial of Iron, and Path of the Damned Game Modes plus the Godlike Race at $2.3M.
Next Stretch Goal - Expert, Trial of Iron, and Path of the Damned Game Modes plus the Godlike Race at $2.3M.
they're easily going to clear 2.3M i think
― Mordy, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)
kind of depressing to think that they probably couldn't raise three million by, like, selling shares in the game, but by offering THE CHANCE TO HANG OUT WITH THE DEVELOPERS FOR TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS they can
― set the controls for the heart of the congos (thomp), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)
well, yes, the economic disparity in this world is troubling and very sad... and it is a little crazy they got a couple dozen people to donate 1-5 grand each... but for some that's pocket change
― Nhex, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

OK! After much team deliberation we have one final ultimate stretch goal. At $4.0m we will be enhancing the whole game. We will use live instrumentation for the soundtrack, add developer in-game commentary, and use every dollar between $3.5m and $4m to enhance the game. Also at $4.0m Chris Avellone will be forced to play Arcanum.
I like the coda

― JimD, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)
better chance of it coming out than a lot of kickstarters imo

yeah, i agree with that.
― the max in the high castle (kingfish), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 05:45 (thirteen years ago)
haha, i do love the "forced to play Arcanum" bit, as it was suggested by one of the backers
we'll see if this really comes out by April 2014 (that would give it about an 18 month dev period)
― Nhex, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)
Assuming they get the writing done in time, I think they can do it. I mean, the majority of the older employees have done this kinda game several times in the past in the Black Isle era
― the max in the high castle (kingfish), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)
Too bad, looked interesting (though I didn't fund it):http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/10/haunts-kickstarter-failure-highlights-the-risks-of-crowdfunding/
I am hoping that Word Realms word game from the Kingdom of Loathing people comes out eventually and is buyable in some form, because I forgot to fund it by a dumb mistake (clicked "Fund this project" about 10 minutes before the deadline but forgot to OK the payment in time). iirc it was supposed to be released around now but I realise probably no Kickstarter in the history of ever has actually shipped by the original stated date
― still small voice of clam (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 20 October 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)
well that's the secret right? the final games will absolutely be buyable once the project is funded so kickstarting is more or less just getting a slight discount. would be far more pertinent to wait on all projects.I think i'm done with kickstarting games, especially where there's obvious funding to be had.*stares at ouya receipt, cries a little*

Yeah, sorry for recommending Haunts upthread... I only pledged $10, so I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't make it out. That said, it's not as dead as most of the news agencies are making out; the dude basically said if he can't get it finished, he'll release the full source and the community can have at it. So *something* will come of it either way.

Would love this to be great, but to avoid disappointment the single player experience has to be a lot better than X3, and the multiplayer has to avoid taking on Eve. that's harder than it sounds on both counts.

Kickstarter UK launch = sudden influx of British indie games on Kickstarter
Sort of looking at one which makes nods to lots of things I totally adore but where the videos/screenshots make it look perilously close to Tower Defence (nice ZX Spectrum on the wall tho):http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1438429768/maia
and one which is in a genre I don't enjoy but looks interestingly done:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1499900830/sir-you-are-being-hunted
but boy howdy, £10 feels like a lot more than $10 in the "can I afford to throw this at something which may never exist and may be terrible, and even if it exists and is brilliant it'll be £2 in a Steam sale eventually" stakes (yes yes we are not preorderers but funders, ok)

As part of Project Eternity making so much dough, one of the side requirements was that Chris Avellone had to play Arcanum. They posted a poll as to how he should document this undertaking.
