My PS3 made some worrying noises when I tried to eject a DVD (wasn't sure if there was anything in it). After a sweaty few minutes of power off/power on/try ejecting, it finally spat out a DVD. It then played another DVD fine (Princess Mononoke, since you ask), so I celebrated by buying 3D Dot Game Heroes, which I've been meaning to pick up since, well, whenever it came out. I'm sure I'll get bored of it a few hours in, but I love the idea.

It reminds me of any number of crazy-looking-but-basically-rubbish Japanese games from the PS1/PS2 days, but has SCE Japan Studio ever actually made a bad game? It's hard to think of one. So this really could be a great as it looks.

Sleeping Dogs is fun. Yakuza series transposed onto GTA engine... but a Japanized version of GTA. Hints of Shenmue.

• drive mechanism will break and also crack the inside edge of the discs.
• it's more expensive?
• it costs the same as a WiiU

i would assume its a lot cheaper to make, so should benefit their bank balance

What's really perplexing are the comments from the fanboys saying that it looks better that the current PS3 slim. It's like a PS3 shaped children's lunchbox.

Actually what's really perplexing is Sony's decision making here. This holiday season, the last before the PS4 drops, would have been a chance to drop the price and sell PS3 slims on the arguments: 1) it's cheap, 2) there's a load of games, many of which are classics this gen, 3) another 10-12 months of titles, 4) you can actually find one in a store as opposed to the already mostly sold out WiiU.

Seriously though, I can imagine it's possible they just can't afford to release these consoles at a much cheaper price. I don't think it's that ugly. Actually none of the consoles this generation have been appealing looking. It's definitely nice that it's smaller (and uses less power).

i just wished they'd dropped the price some more, since it's obviously a cheaper build

that said, i'm shocked MS and Sony haven't put out some info to try to spoil Nintendo's season a little, ala PS2/Dreamcast

no, just rumors... a bunch of devs have already started working on games for the upcoming systems, but assuming they started this summer, 18 months of dev time isn't that great for launch titles. 2-3 years is more believable

but the last guardian is DEFINITELY confirmed for holiday 2012 right

there was a rumour a while back that MS were aiming for holiday 2013 but were having production problems with chip production - no idea how true that was though.
just realised that WiiU will have playable versions of 2D Mario, Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter at launch. if that doesn't shift hardware then Japan will surely be signaling that they are abandoning consoles for good.

Nothing has been announced. The general feeling is that Microsoft and Sony are aiming for holiday 2013. Developers have the systems and are working on games. My feeling is that we will see them by Spring 2014 at the worst. Sales have been really poor for most of the year & something has to be done to freshen things up, sooner rather than later. But it does make you wonder why Sony would release a new PS3 hardware refresh, if the console will be out-of-date in 12 months (though I imagine they could also still hope to sell PS3s for a few years after PS4 gets released, especially if the rumors about a lack of backwards compatibility turn out to be true).

Tokyo Jungle is $12 with a PS+ membership so I will buy and report back when it's live tomorrow. I am into it.
