― your friend, (Z S), Sunday, 22 July 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
anyone playing quantum conundrum? it's pretty dope.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Sunday, 22 July 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)
Spelunker controls not so enjoyable for me unfortunately. I only tried the demo tho so maybe I should give it another chance before writing it off
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)
do you mean the controls, or the "feel" of the jump? i have to say, after playing Fez for a few hours the other day and then switching back to Spelunker, i was really impressed with the feel of the jump! in Fez i had just repeatedly tried and failed to do a kind of precise jump for about 15 minutes straight, the kind of jump you could do first try in mario 3 or something. switching back to the more precise jumping of Spelunker felt so nice.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)
The feel of the jump, the feel of the whip, and also the grab controls when executing jumps. Just feels a little sloppy and imprecise.
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)
the jump i've grown to like a lot, the whip i was disappointed in at first (i kept expecting to get an extension to it so i wouldn't have to be up in every enemy's business in order to whip them!) but i've gotten used to. the grab controls, yeah, not a fan. many a time i've died because i'm accidentally holding onto a ledge and can't manage to get free, and then .5 seconds later some spider rips my face apart.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
For me, Spelunky is perfection. I feel like it deserves its own thread! Did you see the score I set yesterday Z S?
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
uh oh. nope! i'm kind of at a loss right now, because i'm totally playing for points, but that means skipping out on the item shop to save money/points, but that means that early on in the jungle levels i just get my ass kicked.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)
i've never gotten past the jungle levels, btw*shame*
I've never gotten past the FIRST jungle level.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)
The controls are completely precise, but it's a cruel precision.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)
I can't tell you how many times I've had like six hearts and a bunch of cool shit and then fell on some spikes. Game over.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
The jungle is really tough - I've only made it through a couple of times myself, but I'm (slowly) getting better at it. It's tough because you have so much less space to operate in, so it's helpful to either have a lot of bombs or especially the pickaxe. Even if you're playing for points, sometimes it's worth it to buy some extra bombs - not only do they make it easier to get past certain problem areas, but often they will help you to reach areas with extra items / cash, and will more than pay for themselves.
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)
When the level is dark I have absolutely no chance.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)
oh yeah, that's the worst. actually, the very first time i made it to the jungle level, it happened to be dark. i was like "this game is IMPOSSIBLE"
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
You can make so much money in the dark though (if you can survive). Not only lighting the torches, but more importantly, a bunch (10,000?) for every firefly you touch... I used to dread them, but now I'm sort of always hoping for them...
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)
iirc there's a sun tzu line about viewing the dark levels as opportunities, rather than threats
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)
yarg, just missed you by $2000, JCL!
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
yo, ZS i friended u. friend me back!
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
i will say, the music is fantastic.
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)
i think i can now say with a statistically significant level of confidence that i am better at spelunky when i really, really have to use the bathroom.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)
xbox spelunky is goty hands down
― adam, Monday, 30 July 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)
you guys are really tempting me to get it
― Nhex, Monday, 30 July 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
despite my reservations i got it.
― Mordy, Monday, 30 July 2012 03:31 (thirteen years ago)
it is fun, for sure. tho i die an awful lot.
i played the one on PC for a time, i'm just not sure if it's improved enough on Xbox where it's worth buying and investing the time in again? is it?
― Nhex, Monday, 30 July 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)
free on pc btw
― I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 July 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)
that's what i'm saying man!
― Nhex, Monday, 30 July 2012 04:44 (thirteen years ago)
I've never played too much of the PC version, but to me, going back to it (which I just did), it feels really primitive compared to the XBLA version - though it still has its charms. Playing Spelunky on your TV with better controller support, new more detailed graphics (that make the game easier), new music & sound effects, and especially leaderboards is totally worth whatever it cost. Also I think it's good to support such a well designed game with a few dollars.
― JCL, Monday, 30 July 2012 05:19 (thirteen years ago)
Leaderboards are based on depth rather than score, is that right?
― JimD, Monday, 30 July 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)
The opposite actually. They're based on score (gold & gems).
I don't mean to diss the orginal PC game (I just played it a little more). It definitely has a fun, old-school feel (burgertime sound effects, those graphics, etc), that's gone from the XBLA version. But I really do feel the XBLA version is considerably refined (especially in the way enemies move) and simply a better game. Even if it has lost a little of the charm of the PC version...
― JCL, Monday, 30 July 2012 05:37 (thirteen years ago)
ok ok getting this tonight.
― ledge, Monday, 30 July 2012 09:13 (thirteen years ago)
if i was writing a gamePro sidebar tips and tricks feature on spelunky in 1994, i would title it "LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!!"
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Monday, 30 July 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
I've been going with throw a pebble before you leap.
― JimD, Monday, 30 July 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
i would also try to throw in WILL YOU "REFUSE TO LOSE"?
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
i trust you J. I will get it... hopefully before everyone gives up on it (everyone gave up on SSX pretty fast)
― Nhex, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)
I'll get SSX once it's cheap.
― Euler, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)
I will get it... hopefully before everyone gives up on it
I hope to keep at Spelunky until I beat it at least once. Someday! I think it's kind of a perfect, evergreen, title though... since it's always different... it seems endlessly replayable. I also appreciate how you can either play it for five or ten minutes or for hours (if you have hours). It's great too that you can take multiple approaches to playing it - you can play for score - you can play for survival - you can play to discover secrets - you can play to unlock new areas or just focus on getting better at one area if you unlock it & use shortcuts. Even after 300+ games I'm still slowly discovering new stuff, figuring things out and getting better at survival. If you have friends over you can also play co-op or competitive multiplayer (sadly not online though).
― JCL, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
Adventure co-op is brutal. The game is hard enough when you're the only one making mistakes.
The deathmatch thing is too crazy. It's like Bomberman but each match is like 5 seconds long.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 30 July 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)
I suck at spelunky; I also suck at 10,000,000 on iOS
― skrill xx (cozen), Monday, 30 July 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)
Look before you leap indeed; I went from being nowhere near getting past the jungle levels to managing it multiple times very quickly once I discovered that you can look down.
― if, Monday, 30 July 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
love the spring boots, love the baseball glove, love the climbing gloves, and the pickaxe. i'm not a fan of the handheld weapons at all. it's too annoying to use them when there's only one thing that you can hold your hands at a time - drop the weapon, pick up the damsel, move the damsel down a bit in the level, go back to get the weapon, repeat repeat repeat.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Monday, 30 July 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)
I find the boomerang pretty useful despite those issues, and at least it's usually possible to get one very easily and without paying.
― if, Monday, 30 July 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
woohoo, broke the 100K barrier!
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Monday, 30 July 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)
This fuckin game. You fuckin guys.
― ledge, Monday, 30 July 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)
i love this stupid fucking game, even though i can barely break 60k and it's taken me weeks to even get to the ice caves
― scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)
This is going to be another one of those times where I am outside of the ilg mindset I think because I just played the spelunky demo and oh man did I ever hate it. Sorry dudes.
― O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 06:17 (thirteen years ago)
Well what did you hate about it.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 31 July 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)
i'll tell you what i hated, spending ten pounds and two hours making myself very angry. seriously this game is sooooooooo frustrating and i know that's kinda the idea but it's just bad for my health. i made it to area 2 (level 5) ONCE. Sure I'd eventually get better at e.g. actually looking out for arrow traps instead of getting hit by them EVERY TIME, and i could use the wiki for other playing tips but why? whhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyy? just to try and get my name up on a leaderboard? it is not enjoyable.
