― Nhex, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
(also do have the sinking feeling they will just go back to Vice City, but I'd much rather see another city. Even in another country besides the US, but it seems you need that vast multicultural criminal tension for it to work, so where else?)

Hey, guys! Love this conversation.
I voted for Tokyo. With the lights and tall skyscrapers and dense population, you could have some very engaging gameplay. If the artists at Rockstar really branch out like they did in GTA: San Andreas, you could include Mt. Fuji, rural Shinto areas of gameplay, and even the military base at Okinawa. Plus, Japan in itself geographically most resembles a GTA "state". Just imagine plots involving North Korean kidnappers and side missions in pachinko parlours!
Yanks would have to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road, but who knows? Maybe even Godzilla or the Enola Gay could make an appearance in the end!
I wonder what they would call it though. GTA: Miyogi?

― s1ocki, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)
gta blame it on rio
i've never played this game but the latino element seems essential, so i voted for rio
plus rio is already actually like gta
however, it would be super badass to flip the script and pull a "snake eater" where you're in the jungles of colombia and have to steal jeeps and swamp boats

"however, it would be super badass to flip the script and pull a "snake eater" where you're in the jungles of colombia and have to steal jeeps and swamp boats" <-- idk that just sounds like far cry to me

I'd like to see them go back to the bigger three city idea, but yeah, time for some new cities. San Andreas style, but London / Paris / Berlin perhaps.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 22:55 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I voted for Paris b/c I actually know it well, unlike NYC and Miami (never played SA). But from this thread I think a South American city would be badass. But pretty unlikely. I figure it'll be Vice City 2.

― tacos, fettucini, linguini, martini, bikini. (sunny successor), Thursday, 22 January 2009 14:57 (seventeen years ago)
the thing about Chicago is that for people outside America there isn't really a definable image of Chicago. E.g. I could tell you literally nothing about Chicago whereas I could tell you all the boroughs of New York and their geographical placement as well as a number of landmarks without having ever been there.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
the game is so tied to american gansta movie shit i dont think theyll ever take it abroad - if it took place in lagos or rio or wherever the culture just wouldnt be there
― ice cr?m, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)
xpost. ike in GTA 4 going over whatever they called the Queensboro bridge in to Dukes and saying to myself, "hey, there's the Queensbridge Houses". Same thing wouldn't happen in a Chicago based game.
And yeah, it is tied to American gangsta movie shit, plus I think wherever it is would at least have to be anglophone, having it in Rio with all these dudes doing crap accents would be rough.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)
i miss the period detail of earlier GTAs - would love to see 70s/60s game, tho i guess that might turn off legion of teen GTAers...

― set phasers to stan (cozwn), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
a whole bunch of 20s-50s gangsta games have been huge disappointments so maybe a GTA could do it right. 20s Chicago might work. "might feature rub-a-dub and flappers" etc
xp ok now that one i like
― MIRV Griffin (goole), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:23 (seventeen years ago)
I'd be surprised if they didn't do London at some point
― burt_stanton, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:25 (seventeen years ago)
Oh yeah, and even people in the US don't know anything about Chicago... unless you're from the Midwest.
― burt_stanton, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:26 (seventeen years ago)
london was already subject of one of the pre-3d grand theft autos
― MIRV Griffin (goole), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:29 (seventeen years ago)
london is a possibility but dudes are OTM that they will never / should never do it in a non-english country, wouldn't be the same.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:33 (seventeen years ago)
Wouldn't be the same as having a game set in America, in which every single character speaks using UK English idiosyncrasies
― antexit, Thursday, 22 January 2009 16:12 (seventeen years ago)
I think the colonies have long since developed their own charactersitic idiosyncrasies.
― throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Thursday, 22 January 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)
There was this game that existed around the same time as the pre-3D GTAs called Driver.
The first one was set in Miami/SF/LA/NYC but the second was set in Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas and Rio.
I played the hell out of these 2 games. Good times.
― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 January 2009 20:35 (seventeen years ago)
The LA part of San Andreas was amazing, I think they should do LA again revamped.
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 22 January 2009 21:47 (seventeen years ago)
Tokyo would be super-hott -- yakuza, geishas, neon motocycles, mechas. Shinjuku would be total eyeporn overload.
Also: Putin-era Moscow!!
― Leee, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:28 (seventeen years ago)
Think about the clip between gta 3 / VC / San Andreas or even 4 and the expansions and compare it against the current bullshit
― calstars, Saturday, 17 May 2025 20:59 (one year ago)
Well why would you rush to replace a product which is still selling 5m copies a quarter? That’s ~40 people a minute who are still only just getting around to playing GTAV for the first time in 2025.
― JimD, Saturday, 17 May 2025 21:25 (one year ago)
They’re not saying RDR2 has made more money than GTAV, they’re just saying it’s made more money over the last seven years - ie if you discount the first five years of GTA’s sales.

making a sequel with the same engine assets etc does seem like the way to go tho with how complex it is to make the big games these days itd still prob take many years maybe pushing back the next gen idk

Obviously they’ve got experience of that because it’s what they did with 3/VC/SA, but I’m guessing they found it wasn’t as lucrative as what they did with the V engine/assets - build a live service game on top of them and have that rake in cash for you between this and your next game.
― JimD, Sunday, 18 May 2025 10:58 (one year ago)
unfortunately thats the dead end the industry has run into yeah. there can only be like a dozen mega-hit live service games at any given time but running one of them is so much more lucrative than making normal video games that execs are now just gambling away entire companies left and right to try to become one of them
― ciderpress, Sunday, 18 May 2025 15:14 (one year ago)
the PS2 faster release cadence still exists in lower budget and indie stuff but the big companies are never going to go back to it

sony situation is wild just lighting money on fire for games that either never come out or no one plays when they do
― lag∞n, Sunday, 18 May 2025 17:36 (one year ago)
The pattern (not unique to Sony) is pretty funny. It's always something like: 1) game studio does well enough to get Sony's attention, 2) Sony buys game studio for hundreds of millions if not billions, 3) Sony directs or redirects studio team toward a new secret project, 4) years go by with no updates, 5) secret project gets cancelled, costing Sony and the studio many more millions, 6) Sony downsizes or disbands the studio. Bungie, Bend, Bluepoint, even Guerrilla, Santa Monica or Naughty Dog, they all seem at the least a little stifled by Sony. I guess the tradeoff is that in the case of a few of these, their games are so closely linked to Sony's identity and financial success that Sony can't help but throw money at them.
