coventry maybe but wd a milton keynes GTA really be any cop? GTA needs a sufficiently large mix of ethnicities and immigrant factions to work successfully dunnit? which probably discounts a heap of cities on my list, tho it would be nice to see them stray from that formula (I might be getting GTA wrong here btw, I'm not the biggest fanboy, feel free to correct me)

Hey, guys! Love this conversation.
I voted for Tokyo. With the lights and tall skyscrapers and dense population, you could have some very engaging gameplay. If the artists at Rockstar really branch out like they did in GTA: San Andreas, you could include Mt. Fuji, rural Shinto areas of gameplay, and even the military base at Okinawa. Plus, Japan in itself geographically most resembles a GTA "state". Just imagine plots involving North Korean kidnappers and side missions in pachinko parlours!
Yanks would have to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road, but who knows? Maybe even Godzilla or the Enola Gay could make an appearance in the end!
I wonder what they would call it though. GTA: Miyogi?

to be fair those rumours have been going around for a while now, and I don't believe Rockstar have confirmed anything other than that they are working on the game.
Strong possibility on both accounts though. Agree about a new thread, happy to endulge in any speculation etc on the next game.

I'm convinced that at least half of these open roam sessions are populated by children who haven't even hit puberty yet.
I ask my 13-year-old son, who has hit puberty, what's the deal and he's just, I dunno. I'm on Oculus.
I hear some kid warbling that he wants a car, can anyone give me a car, or another one almost burst into tears because he's getting griefed. I think, What the hell am I doing here? But then I think, But wait. This is a game made for adults, not these children!
I just mute the whole session now, but it's still weird. It wasn't unusual to hear a squeaker or two back in the day, but it's been nothing but during the holidays.

this trailer didn't excite me as much as the first, the novelty of the reveal is ofc gone now so less of the whiz-bang 'look at this insane thing we made' showing-off. (plus the tom petty song worked way better than this one).
instead its a reminder that this will have story mode, lame satire, etc. arthur was a wonderfully done character but rdr2's story, while a bit more 'elevated' than their usual fare still was cliche as hell
i don't know what i'm expecting from these games, i guess. they certainly deliver on most of what they aim for, i think? still, they're always not quite as good as you wanted them to be, which i believe someone in here said re: rockstar and has stuck w/ me.
honestly i'm not sure what they are aiming for anymore. i guess i still can't believe how horrible a 'game' GTA V was. rdr2 was a horrible 'game' but a great 'experience' IMO. (GTA V was a horrible experience AND a horrible game). when i say 'game' i'm talking like, tetris as the ur-video game. i realize they aren't necessarily aiming for that. but to me rdr2 (almost) justified their design philosophy and GTA V failed completely
i'm sure this has been said a million times but the aspect of interactivity is handled so strangely in modern rockstar games. the intended immersion actually highlights how artificial everything is and is in fact not immersive at all and is instead distracting and frustrating
that's why the teasers move me a bit more, can imagine what could be but inevitably isn't
― global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 16:15 (one year ago)

― conspiracitorial theories (stevie), Wednesday, 7 May 2025 16:18 (one year ago)
Currently replaying GTA: Vice City on my daughter's Switch and really enjoying it. Have little inclination to play the new game - let alone invest in the tech to play it, or find the time to scratch beyond the surface. I enjoyed GTAV as a video game - perhaps the last one I really sank time in, arriving just as my partner became pregnant and in the last gasp of my having spare time - but it was misogynist as fuck and really, really gross in places. The "satire" was often weak and dumb, beyond sophomoric. And replaying VC, a fair chunk of that is similarly simplistic and blunt. I guess these games hit different when you're almost 50, and have much more compelling things to spend your dwindling time on.

― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 16:25 (one year ago)
thinking on it now and the 2nd and 3rd rdr2 trailers that gave a glimpse into the story got me fuckin stoked, unlike this
rdr2 was basically a fantasy setting and that's a better concept for a video game IMO. how far off is crafting potions and armor from making 'dynamite arrows' or whatever. its not. not that 'crafting' is what i like, really, i think i'm just saying it heightens the artificiality of the experience in a way that suits the concept of a 'game' and in a way that fits with the world better. guessing the fiddly bullshit in this game, instead of crafting, will be like, keeping your engagement on 'dicktok' or something
maybe i just like cowboys
― global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 16:27 (one year ago)
I think because it is about cowboys in a different era, there is an element of escapism to it, which is akin to fantasy. These games though are very much leaning to the trashiest contemporary aspects of our nation, so not escapism more ... hyperrealism?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 May 2025 16:33 (one year ago)
and have much more compelling things to spend your dwindling time on
on reflection this reads more dismissive than I intended, tbh - I've definitely sunk hours into video games in recent years. but as global tetrahedron suggests, spending my one life on this planet "keeping your engagement on 'dicktok'" would feel like replicating in the virtual realm mistakes I'm trying not to make in the real world.
Really wanted to love RDR1, but found horses TOO SLOW. Really loved the mission where you pick flowers for a stranger's wife, though (the denouement was a bit of a shock though)

This is kinda nuts:
As part of its latest financial report, publisher Take-Two confirmed that GTA 5 has sold-in 215 million units, up from 210 in the last quarterly report. That'll include some physical stock being held by retailers that hasn't yet been sold through to consumers, but that's a pretty negligible caveat, especially considering that Take-Two reported another 5 million copies of GTA 5 sold every single quarter this year.Red Dead Redemption 2 is also selling by the wagonload, with 4 million copies sold in the past three months. Citing venerable industry analyst group Circana, Take-Two says RDR2 is the "best-selling title of the past 7 years in the US based on dollar sales."
Red Dead Redemption 2 is also selling by the wagonload, with 4 million copies sold in the past three months. Citing venerable industry analyst group Circana, Take-Two says RDR2 is the "best-selling title of the past 7 years in the US based on dollar sales."
So GTAV has sold 215 million copies, and RDR2 has if not sold more then made more money than whatever GTAV has made (and counting).
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 17 May 2025 20:51 (one year ago)
Think about the clip between gta 3 / VC / San Andreas or even 4 and the expansions and compare it against the current bullshit
― calstars, Saturday, 17 May 2025 20:59 (one year ago)
Well why would you rush to replace a product which is still selling 5m copies a quarter? That’s ~40 people a minute who are still only just getting around to playing GTAV for the first time in 2025.
― JimD, Saturday, 17 May 2025 21:25 (one year ago)
They’re not saying RDR2 has made more money than GTAV, they’re just saying it’s made more money over the last seven years - ie if you discount the first five years of GTA’s sales.

Obviously they’ve got experience of that because it’s what they did with 3/VC/SA, but I’m guessing they found it wasn’t as lucrative as what they did with the V engine/assets - build a live service game on top of them and have that rake in cash for you between this and your next game.
― JimD, Sunday, 18 May 2025 10:58 (one year ago)
unfortunately thats the dead end the industry has run into yeah. there can only be like a dozen mega-hit live service games at any given time but running one of them is so much more lucrative than making normal video games that execs are now just gambling away entire companies left and right to try to become one of them

sony situation is wild just lighting money on fire for games that either never come out or no one plays when they do
― lag∞n, Sunday, 18 May 2025 17:36 (one year ago)
The pattern (not unique to Sony) is pretty funny. It's always something like: 1) game studio does well enough to get Sony's attention, 2) Sony buys game studio for hundreds of millions if not billions, 3) Sony directs or redirects studio team toward a new secret project, 4) years go by with no updates, 5) secret project gets cancelled, costing Sony and the studio many more millions, 6) Sony downsizes or disbands the studio. Bungie, Bend, Bluepoint, even Guerrilla, Santa Monica or Naughty Dog, they all seem at the least a little stifled by Sony. I guess the tradeoff is that in the case of a few of these, their games are so closely linked to Sony's identity and financial success that Sony can't help but throw money at them.
