The 360 version of Spelunky is out on July 4th
10/10 review from Eurogamerhttp://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-02-spelunky-review
― JCL, Monday, 2 July 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)
I heard it's kind of hard.
― polyphonic, Monday, 2 July 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
That looks great! I haven't been playing much 360 at all since I moved to my new place, due to the stupidest thing - my television isn't in a convenient location to hook up the cable to the internet, and I'm too cheap to buy the router that microsoft sells.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Monday, 2 July 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)
But that tempts me to figure out a solution.
I ain't a typical fan of yer cute traditional platformer but that review pretty much makes it sound like the best game ever. Except maybe this little bit of underselling: a vibrant cartoon aesthetic that blends the painterly tones of Braid with the personality of Plants vs. Zombies.
― Jesu swept (ledge), Monday, 2 July 2012 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
haha that game sounds like a perfect hell for me
― goole, Monday, 2 July 2012 17:16 (thirteen years ago)
.. is it just a Rogue?
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 2 July 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
Spelunky is basically a roguelike platformer... i.e. perfect.
The original PC version can still be downloaded for free, here...http://spelunkyworld.com/original.html
― JCL, Monday, 2 July 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
like pretty much all XBLA games, i'll get it when it drops to half price, then play it a year later
― Nhex, Monday, 2 July 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)
i finally hooked my xbox up to my router and downloaded spelunky! cozeny, iforry72 and polyphonique, you better watch out. i am chasing you on the leaderboards

My phobia of bees/wasps is totally screwing me over on the jungle levels on that
― if, Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:06 (thirteen years ago)
beat ya'll. ;)
yeah, i suck at the jungle levels. i guess are there only 5 worlds, with 4 levels in each? i see the top dude on the leaderboard only reached level 5-4.
that's actually kinda nice. i was worried there were like 100 levels and i could only reach the 6th one.
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:08 (thirteen years ago)
is there anything better than getting smooches from the dog? no, there is not.
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)
obvious stuff a spelunker has heard before, but i love the sense of gradual mastery with this game. the first 20 rounds, it was really a struggle to get through the first mines section. now the first few stages seem less like challenges and more like opportunities to rescue a few peeps and get 6-7 lives instead of working through the jungle off of 2-3 or something.
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)
however, getting up to 8 hearts and then impaling yourself within 5 seconds of starting 2-1, like i just did, is GRRRRRR
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:35 (thirteen years ago)
Wait, what dog?
― JCL, Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:45 (thirteen years ago)
ZS, sent you a freind request!
― JCL, Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:54 (thirteen years ago)
Friend request too!
― JCL, Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)
just accepted! and you're just a bit above my top score ($43,950)
so much more fun to play this with a goal in mind, looking for extra treasure, etc
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:57 (thirteen years ago)
ok, i'm gonna have to get this
― Mordy, Thursday, 19 July 2012 00:59 (thirteen years ago)
in settings, you can choose the person/thing you rescue. by default it's a lady, but you can also choose a man or a dog. you can also choose to rotate between the three. that's what i chose, so that every level i end up smoochin' a lady or a man or a dog. it's whatever, i'm just a spelunker lookin' for smooches wherever i can get 'em
― your friend, (Z S), Thursday, 19 July 2012 01:03 (thirteen years ago)
that spelunky, he don't care, he's poly
― Nhex, Thursday, 19 July 2012 01:07 (thirteen years ago)
I am terrible at this game.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 July 2012 01:10 (thirteen years ago)
I need to play this. Just downloaded tony hawk though. Time to reminisce.
― Jeff, Thursday, 19 July 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)
fuck tunnel man and his increasingly outrageous demands.
― adam, Thursday, 19 July 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)
Who dares challenge my reign at the top of the ILX leaderboard? ($50,300)
i am basically just trying to con people into playing this with me
― your friend, (Z S), Saturday, 21 July 2012 22:48 (thirteen years ago)
i dare! but i haven't gotten around to it yet. we're friends on 360 right?
― Mordy, Sunday, 22 July 2012 01:22 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not sure! i dont' think i've seen you on there. i am:
Z2S5
― your friend, (Z S), Sunday, 22 July 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
anyone playing quantum conundrum? it's pretty dope.
― 40oz of tears (Jordan), Sunday, 22 July 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)
Spelunker controls not so enjoyable for me unfortunately. I only tried the demo tho so maybe I should give it another chance before writing it off
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:20 (thirteen years ago)
do you mean the controls, or the "feel" of the jump? i have to say, after playing Fez for a few hours the other day and then switching back to Spelunker, i was really impressed with the feel of the jump! in Fez i had just repeatedly tried and failed to do a kind of precise jump for about 15 minutes straight, the kind of jump you could do first try in mario 3 or something. switching back to the more precise jumping of Spelunker felt so nice.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)
The feel of the jump, the feel of the whip, and also the grab controls when executing jumps. Just feels a little sloppy and imprecise.
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)
the jump i've grown to like a lot, the whip i was disappointed in at first (i kept expecting to get an extension to it so i wouldn't have to be up in every enemy's business in order to whip them!) but i've gotten used to. the grab controls, yeah, not a fan. many a time i've died because i'm accidentally holding onto a ledge and can't manage to get free, and then .5 seconds later some spider rips my face apart.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
For me, Spelunky is perfection. I feel like it deserves its own thread! Did you see the score I set yesterday Z S?
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
uh oh. nope! i'm kind of at a loss right now, because i'm totally playing for points, but that means skipping out on the item shop to save money/points, but that means that early on in the jungle levels i just get my ass kicked.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)
i've never gotten past the jungle levels, btw*shame*
I've never gotten past the FIRST jungle level.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)
The controls are completely precise, but it's a cruel precision.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)
I can't tell you how many times I've had like six hearts and a bunch of cool shit and then fell on some spikes. Game over.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
The jungle is really tough - I've only made it through a couple of times myself, but I'm (slowly) getting better at it. It's tough because you have so much less space to operate in, so it's helpful to either have a lot of bombs or especially the pickaxe. Even if you're playing for points, sometimes it's worth it to buy some extra bombs - not only do they make it easier to get past certain problem areas, but often they will help you to reach areas with extra items / cash, and will more than pay for themselves.
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)
When the level is dark I have absolutely no chance.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)
oh yeah, that's the worst. actually, the very first time i made it to the jungle level, it happened to be dark. i was like "this game is IMPOSSIBLE"
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
You can make so much money in the dark though (if you can survive). Not only lighting the torches, but more importantly, a bunch (10,000?) for every firefly you touch... I used to dread them, but now I'm sort of always hoping for them...
― JCL, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)
iirc there's a sun tzu line about viewing the dark levels as opportunities, rather than threats
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)
yarg, just missed you by $2000, JCL!
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
yo, ZS i friended u. friend me back!
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
i will say, the music is fantastic.
― Mordy, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)
i think i can now say with a statistically significant level of confidence that i am better at spelunky when i really, really have to use the bathroom.
― you're all going to hello (Z S), Sunday, 29 July 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)
xbox spelunky is goty hands down
― adam, Monday, 30 July 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

― Nhex, Monday, 30 July 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)
