That almost happened to me IRL in the Doge's palace in Venice. Walked through a dungeon room and went down some stairs, walked round another dungeon room and then through various galleries and ended up in yet another dungeon room with yet more stairs going down. Except of course without realising we'd done a loop round and back up to the first room. In the split second after I realised that I had a horrible giddy vision of going down and round and down and round, endlessly spiralling into the depths of the earth.
