somehow got addicted to this flash mmo topdown shooter kind of thing, Realm of the Mad Dog
every 20 minutes or so there's a huge earthquake and all of the players are transported down to the pit of hell in this giant mob to make a run at the evil lord of doom or whatever, nabbing crazy xp bonuses all the way as a team.
― 1986 tallest hair contest (Z S), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:31 (fourteen years ago)
er, Realm of the Mad God.

― 1986 tallest hair contest (Z S), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:32 (fourteen years ago)
it's kind of chaotic to figure out what to do during the first 15 minutes or so, similar to Minecraft, but soon progress seems intuitive
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:33 (fourteen years ago)
it's pretty fun, and seems to have gotten better in the last year. i could easily see sinking too much time into it, but.. i won't
― Nhex, Saturday, 14 April 2012 08:18 (fourteen years ago)
Killed by a Great Lizard, actually two of them. Seriously, if you see one of the red dots on the minimap moving quickly in a circle, avoid them. The game's basic combat kind of reminds me of Sinistar - I used the old tricks of finding the boss, then running away while firing, all the while holding down the fire button to take out any minions in the crossfire.

I always have a lot of lag in games like this. the WASD ends up sending me in the opposite direction I push.
― Jeff, Saturday, 14 April 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)
It's pretty fun when you can hook up with someone else to slay a boss or two (the game encourages you to do it by giving you big exp bonuses when you're near other players), but often i can't keep up with the roving mob because i'm old man zach these days. still, multiplayer roguelike!

ugh, can't stop playing. it's an unnerving game because once you're a road or two into the island, the action is pretty relentless. it's always on the edge between manageable and chaos.
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Saturday, 14 April 2012 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
ok that game is neat and I spent way too much of this weekend on it, thank you
I am quite bad at it tho, or at least I'm quite bad at knowing when I'm out of my depth when wandering round the map (sometimes you see a new enemy and think "ok this dude is totally badass and I am foolish" and then they barely graze you, and then after that happens 5 times and you think "well I guess I need to find tougher guys to match my awesomeness" you suddenly turn a corner and go from full HP to 0 quicker than you can remember which slots have healing potion in)
I am also quite bad at steering around with one hand on WASD and the other aiming on my shitty laptop mousepad, going from doing that to looking at items or pressing 1-8 without something suddenly appearing and killing you is difficult, have no idea how anyone manages to chat as well
lol old woman lacks coordination required for gaming

my problem is that i can't see the mouse cursor on the screen. i'm always losing it, especially when i'm in a massive 20-person train running around a loop on a road.

― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:32 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah, in big crowds I can't even tell which character is mine, which combined with the lagginess of big groups makes it a bit too easy to run right into a bad guy and then stand still under him going "uh"
(or find that suddenly everyone else is 6 screenfuls away and I don't know where I'm going)
― instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)
but the game is neat and I am just complaining abt my lack of coordination in the hope that someone will go "actually there is a magic single keypress that will solve all your problems!"
or sth
― instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:35 (fourteen years ago)
one thing that has been helping me is stashing away equipment for other classes in the vault. that way when you start out as a fresh character after dying, you can eq yourself with decent shit before heading out as a level 1
― Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)
Oh god, I foolishly clicked through this thread again and it resulted in me playing straight through Abobo's Big Adventure. Which was definitely entertaining although really frustrating in a couple of places...I mean of all the things to take from Mega Man they went with the instant-death lasers!? Final boss fight was also kind of annoying...but satisfying when you finally pull it off. Lots of good gags along the way...maybe not the masterpiece it promised but definitely transcends the postmodern collage thing it shoots for.

― bamcquern, Friday, 27 April 2012 04:07 (fourteen years ago)
Charming concept, sort of don't get how it's a game after a certain point - like once there's a million dots and the controls are so counterintuitive as to be random, then I'm basically just hitting the keys and hoping eventually the lucky dot hits the center. Like it's so soothing as to be a screensaver except also really sort of frustrating on a physical level.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 27 April 2012 04:49 (fourteen years ago)
ha i spent aaages playing realm of the mad god when 'working' on my first paper
the difficulty is keyed to altitude, moving inland is always towards the mountains which is where the boss monsters are; following roads keeps you on more or less the same difficulty
when i was playing it ppl were not managing to trigger the end-of-the-world bit every 20 minutes. but mb they have got better. i don't think i ever managed to hit the end-of-the-world boss tbh

so this is interesting (it has an Emily Short story already) tho it seems kinda limited:
http://varytale.com/books/
― Mordy, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 18:07 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm playing the Emily Short one, which is quite nicely written, though I'm not entirely sure what my aims will bring (I'm attempting to become more worldly while simultaneously practising my spelling) or if I honestly care, and I'm confused about whether the progress of months means anything... and the limit on actions is just frustrating here - while I can understand larger game worlds using it to stop someone burning through the content too quickly, if these are individual stories then why are they limited so tightly?
― emil.y, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)
to entice you to spend money i guess
― Mordy, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 18:40 (fourteen years ago)
Well, yep. But there are ways of making that happen that don't seem so cynical and artificial, surely? I bloody hate the 'freemium' model, I must say - the loosening up of Echo Bazaar's turn count has definitely improved play to the extent that I don't really mind the limitations, but this strikes me as something that should either be sold as a game in itself (and I'm sure it'd do fine on the iphone app/kindle/reader market) or done entirely for free, not forced into shitty freemium that is likely to make me hate everything to do with it in the end.
