Found a copy of Rondo of Blood & a PC Engine emulator. This game is funky; it borrows art from SQ and Castlevania IV, plus plenty of familiar baddies show up, usually with the exact same animation of later games.

lotsa late SNES/Genesis-era anime, too

kingfishy (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 9 February 2007 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
The big game & hobby shop has this for $35, which really isn't all that bad, but i'm used to seeing in CD Universe & other places for like $10.

kingfish, Sunday, 25 February 2007 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

aw man why are all these ps1 games so expensive, I missed out on all of them cuz i didn't have a playstation. and i wanna play them! Like I checked the prices for Suikoden 2 and it's going for about $150! And then I remember that that's American dollars and so it's even more than I intuitively thought at first. ;_;

aaron d.g., Sunday, 4 March 2007 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh hey mr. banana, i just read your email! (sorry I don't check it very often.) Yes I am Canadian, and am interested in buying Metal Gear Solid (I've always wanted to play that!) I've never actually bought anything off Amazon Marketplace before, but I now realize that it is a world of opportunity.

It might be a week or two before I actually buy, 'cause i have lots of games right now that are already occupying my time. Thanks very much!

aaron d.g., Friday, 9 March 2007 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

finally got Portrait of Ruin. The two player bit is really nice, and the artwork is top notch.

the item drops are too stingy, tho.

kingfish, Friday, 9 March 2007 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

Are your real initials GMC, aaron? cause if not, ya just missed out.

abanana, Friday, 9 March 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

i'm playing portrait of ruin right now. there are some rpg-y elements of it i can't quite figure out. i guess i should read the manual.

s1ocki, Monday, 12 March 2007 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

one thing I hate about the DS games is the manuals don't tell you what INT, CON etc do.
ATK: physical attack power
DEF: physical defense
STR: strength (???)
CON: constitution (???)
INT: magical attack power?
MND: mind, magical defense?
LCK: luck, how often enemies drop rare items and souls.

abanana, Monday, 12 March 2007 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

ok i have most of portrait of ruin figured out except WHERE DO I BUY STUFF. there was one guy at the beginning and i'm picking up mad $$$$$ but there is nowhere to spend it!! and i need potions and shit!

s1ocki, Monday, 12 March 2007 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania:_Dawn_of_Sorrow
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania:_Portrait_of_Ruin

(unhelpful, unfortunately)

Int -> magic recharge rate
mnd -> magic def, i think
con -> hit point modifier

did anybody play any of the PS2 games? I'm wondering if Lament of Innocence is worth trying out or not.

kingfish, Monday, 12 March 2007 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

also, why do some many of these types worship Rondo of Blood? Is it just cuz the design style changed and the game was never released to NA?

kingfish, Monday, 12 March 2007 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Games/por.html

Neat, this place has scans of all the promo PoR artwork(as well as for the other games, too)

kingfish, Monday, 12 March 2007 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

but where do i buy shit

s1ocki, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

from the fat monk guy

kingfish, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 03:09 (nineteen years ago)

am i missing him or is he just really rare in the game? or does he only show up in one place?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

ok nevermind i think i figured it out

now i am stuck in that gear tower with the pillar of flame and the medusa heads fromhell

s1ocki, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

can't do much over there. try another part of the castle. beat any portrait you've found.

and don't sell any weapons or clothes yet. some of them are needed for quests, and you never get them back, unless you online shop.

kingfish, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

oh shit i sold some already :O

s1ocki, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

also what's the deal w/ online?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

The weapons you can't sell are the nun's clothes(3 different pieces), the long sword, uhm, and some other food bits, i think.

Online you can open a store or go shopping at somebody else's, not sure how else that works.

kingfish, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

did anybody play any of the PS2 games? I'm wondering if Lament of Innocence is worth trying out or not.

I have that one. It's ehhhh...maybe worth renting.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

do you think they ever considered calling the series "transylcastle"?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

now that's just silly

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

i got the other dscastlevania yesterday for used too!! WOOHOODLES!

s1ocki, Thursday, 15 March 2007 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

ok this game was way shorter than i though tit would be!

although i'm guessing i did like none of hte side quests.

s1ocki, Thursday, 15 March 2007 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

which one? PoR?

kingfish, Thursday, 15 March 2007 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

ya!

s1ocki, Friday, 16 March 2007 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

did i miss something? i beat the two sisters and then their dad, braunstein or something was like, stay away from my daughters, we're a family. then everyone left. the end.

s1ocki, Friday, 16 March 2007 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

you missed something!

abanana, Friday, 16 March 2007 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

pay attention to the dialogue right before you fight the sisters.

abanana, Friday, 16 March 2007 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

the dialogue with the sisters?

does it have something to do with the whatsit upstairs from the sisters?

s1ocki, Friday, 16 March 2007 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

ok i figured out what to do, i think.

but it is not easy.

s1ocki, Friday, 16 March 2007 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, you missed a lot. That's the thing w/ all post-SotN games. If you hit the end way too quickly and easily, you missed something. It's far more obvious in DoS, where large sections of the map are still unexplored after the "final" fight.

kingfish, Friday, 16 March 2007 06:20 (nineteen years ago)

yay i found like 20 new levels

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 05:26 (nineteen years ago)

haha since this come out for XBLA/VC the ebay price has dropped thru the floor. and, even better news, I FOUND MY COPY! I didn't sell it after all!

Playing it for the first time in 5-6 years reveals a few things; they really did re-use all the sprites and even whole rooms, layout & all, for every castlevania since. There's a few customizations, since the lizard with a naked chick for a tail has the chick wearing a slutty top this time, also the controls are a bit wonkier than any GBA/DS game.

Also, the voicework and dialogue really is as bad as everybody remembers it.

kingfish, Monday, 30 April 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

'lizard with a naked chick for a tail'

MUST PLAY

Playing C:Order of Shadows. It's a lot like the NES versions, due to the limited controls. You still have stats & an inventory, tho.

Two new games on the way, another DS title and a 3d fighter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania:_Order_of_Ecclesia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania_Judgment

Apparently, the Portrait of Ruin team is again working on this. Too bad I sold the DS a year, but we'll see.

kingfish, Saturday, 12 July 2008 08:33 (seventeen years ago)

I kinda burned out on these games when I picked up that GBA double pack with Harmony/Aria, though they were both fun. Both pretty good, though Aria was way better (damn you addictive soul collect-a-thon!) in general.

Not sure if I should still bother to get the two DS games, or just wait until Order comes out.... what say you?

Got an emulator for the original PC Engine "Rondo of Blood". Yeah, it's the best Castlevania game ever.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

I really like the anime feel on this one. The controls are perfect and the game music is amazing. Stage 2 is like being in the "Thriller" music video.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

This game is a work of art, Roget Ebert can suck it.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

I need to get these drum samples.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

SOTN and another CV game is cheap on PS Store at the moment so I grabbed them. Worth it?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 13:21 (five years ago)

Certainly. Rondo of Blood is my favorite of the "classic" gameplay style. It placed #44 on this recent forum poll of platformers: https://www.resetera.com/threads/reseteras-101-essential-platformers-top-101-posted-hm-voting-in-progress.217215/

I picked up the collection with 1-4 and Bloodlines. I've never played Bloodlines before.

wasdnous (abanana), Tuesday, 7 July 2020 16:42 (five years ago)

Bloodlines is totally dope. One of the best classic era titles.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 7 November 2020 19:40 (five years ago)

A Lodoss War game? in 2020??
All for it, but surprised. Lol at that "Item Get" animation being a carbon copy of the Igavania message style

Nhex, Saturday, 7 November 2020 19:47 (five years ago)

the lodossvania is by the same folks that made the touhouvania game a year or two ago that was pretty good

ciderpress, Saturday, 7 November 2020 19:53 (five years ago)

I didn't realize that the first Lodoss book (Grey Witch?) appeared in english a few years ago, some reviewers say it's completely generic but I'm putting it on my endless list of things I'd like to but probably wont read.
Actually I didn't know there was a book series that came out of another table top rpg.

I had no idea that in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - the gradient in the UI flips based on which castle you are in (normal or upside down) pic.twitter.com/tSpORA19cz

Jonk Raven (dog latin), Saturday, 14 February 2026 09:00 (three months ago)

looks good. the last proper 2d metroidvania one was order of ecclesia in 2008 if you dont count bloodstained, though you maybe should given the shared creator dna. in which case we're getting two proper castlevanias this year since bloodstained 2 is coming too
