in all seriousness tho, xbox live is a revelation. /the/ killer app of this generation for my money. don't know if you're maybe a bit too late to ~get into it~ at this point tho

definitely recommend trying it out if you can bag a free month's trial or w/e

do I hear 51, 51, 51... I'll give you 51, 51, 51 (cozen), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

I probably will at some point but idk, playing games is like an occasional thing for me - like I get really into a couple of games over a period of some months & then I'm doing other stuff for months at a time. I'm totally sure it's way fun but I am probably a little late for it, yeah

xbox live is a revelation.

I guess this makes sense if you like multiplayer, but for me xbox live is this weird extra expense that I get very little value from.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

ditto. there was a minute when i was playing left 4 dead with friends online (lol single life), but since then i haven't used live at all. netflix is the only reason i'm paying for it, more or less.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

xbox live is like 99% streaming netflix and demos/downloadables to me, but this is changing now that the multiplayer coop of portal 2 sits angrily unplayed in its case.

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

I do netflix and demos on my PS3 now, for free.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

ya but PS3... has no games

do I hear 51, 51, 51... I'll give you 51, 51, 51 (cozen), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yes it does!

polyphonic, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

The combat in El Shaddai is definitely on the shallow side, but man is this game cool and weird. The sidescrolling parts are gorgeous.

polyphonic, Monday, 12 September 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

ok i want to buy some games for the weekend since the gf is out of town, and gamespot is doing buy 2 get third free so here are my options so far:

dead rising 2
dead space 2
fable III
metro 2033
shadows of the damned
other stuff i am forgetting

pretty much needs to be in the $30 and under category (shadows of the damned is $35 which is hurting its chances tbh). any thoughts peeps who have played these?

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

dead rising 2 is great. i haven't played metro 2033 but i really want to -- post apocalyptic russian game w/ ammo bartering sounds very cool. fable 3 i didn't play but i got off the fable train with number 2 they're all so samey and kinda boring. dead space 2 i watched my friend play and it looks scarier and better designed than number 1 which was really good and which i greatly enjoyed playing.

Mordy, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

if it were me i'd buy dead rising 2, metro 2033 and get dead space 2 free

Mordy, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

Dead Space 2 is pretty much what you'd expect if you've played Dead Space. It's good but doesn't seem as engaging or atmospheric as the first one did. Worth having though.

Metro 2033 is super-atmospheric but i haven't got far with it yet. It's very tough and the weapons seem really underpowered but it's definitely something i'm going to go back to.

A little bit like Peter Crouch but with more mobility (ShariVari), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

only one i've played is dead space 2, which accomplishes exactly what you think it will, but metro 2033 and shadows of the damned seem more like jjj games.

xp ha

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

Definitely not Fable 3.

Fallout 3, Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age Origins, Resident Evil 5, Just Cause 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 are all under $30 if you happened to miss those before.

polyphonic, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

as a dude who spends way too much money on games, i have all of those

lol at me

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i kinda disliked fable 2 and figured that 3 would be more of the same, but some dumb part of me keeps trying to recapture that first time fable magic

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

3 is much worse than 2.

polyphonic, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

ah crap i also dont have need for speed: hot pursuit or mass effect 2

hmmmm

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

ME2!!! Get that.

Mordy, Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

Mass Effect 2 is superb.

A little bit like Peter Crouch but with more mobility (ShariVari), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

i have also considered the idea that from everything i read i could probably burn through shadows of the damned in a weekend and then go and swap it out for something else on the list

xpost is it a bad sign if i got really bored with mass effect 1 and quit somewhere around the cantina shootout thing

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i'd say if you didn't finish me1 don't bother with me2 since at least 90% of its punch is from situating the world within the context of the actions you took personally in the first game

Mordy, Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

ME2 is definitely better than ME1 though, especially if you don't care that they simplified the RPG elements.

polyphonic, Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

and i also havent bought blur yet

leaning towards shadows of the damned, metro 2033, and dead rising 2 and just buying blur later on, but who knows

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i'd say if you didn't finish me1 don't bother with me2 since at least 90% of its punch is from situating the world within the context of the actions you took personally in the first game

i never played ME1, which is probably why i was pretty bored by ME2. a

remember yr man when he's at wooooooooooork (Z S), Thursday, 15 September 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

selection was picked over, so no metro 2033, but had wild urge to buy you dont know jack instead. will report back on shadows of the damned and dead rising 2

Scream, Fistula, Scream! (jjjusten), Friday, 16 September 2011 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

shadows of the damned going back, dead rising 2 is pretty awes, hoping that a used copy of metro 2033 came in

guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

ok ended up with need for speed hot pursuit and buying a copy of metro 2033.

so far metro 2033 seems like its a game built especially for my brain. its great.

guh (jjjusten), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

super super dark, great feel and environments, everything is dismal and broken and depressing. all the weird conversations everywhere around you are worth listening to, realizing that you cant give money to all the beggars because they are everywhere so you have to try to pick the ones you believe or that look like they really need the money, only to have some laugh at you just as you get out of earshot. oh and did i mention that all the money is bullets, so every act of charity means you might end up knife-fighting a mutant in a radioactive corridor later on? this is a bleak bleak game, and its going to be awesome.

guh (jjjusten), Thursday, 22 September 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Gears of War 3 multiplayer is fucking cool. And it looks amazing in 3D, if you happen to know anyone who spent money on that particular boondoggle.

polyphonic, Monday, 3 October 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

Did one month for a dollar so I'm on this xbox live thing for at least a month. Name = fireantparty

Jeff, Monday, 3 October 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

dear metro 2033 u are really really hard

guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

Looks like Dead Nation on wheels. Or a top-down Just Cause!

a guy called Gerard (onimo), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)

ah, "from the creators of Just Cause 2" might explain it :)

a guy called Gerard (onimo), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)

strongly reminds me of a game i used to play on the arcade at my dentist's office, but i can't remember the name off-hand (it was on the same machine w/ pacman, contra and that game where you're a jet plane fighting the japanese during ww2 iirc)

Mordy, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

jackal?

original bgm, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 13:13 (fourteen years ago)

yes to both!

Mordy, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

man, that looks like just the kind of semi-mindless action/driving fun game that i want to play right now

whooooaaaaa! (Z S), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

I suggest playing it multiplayer even if it's with randoms.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

I'm playing Madden '12 and it is easily the worst Madden I've ever played. I said that last year but this one is much worse than last year. Sheesh.

The PS3 version doesn't even have a roster update. Does the 360 version? Nnamdi is on the Raiders, Derek Anderson is QBing the Cards, etc.

polyphonic, Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

one of my favourite DSP Madden 12 clips:
http://www.youtube.com/user/stefozzie#p/a/f/0/SiHlm_GUEyM

(background: phil played this same match previously but it crashed whilst he was winning, in his attempte to replay it things just didn't go his way. The rage starts arond 2:15 in and continues right until the end of the vid where he ends the clip with a most amazing sentence!)

Summer Slam! (Ste), Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

no roster update??? that's a huge step backwards if true

Mordy, Saturday, 5 November 2011 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

anyone else playing forza 4? it's pretty amazing to look at from cockpit view with the realistic shadows and stuff.

Planningtocockblock (haitch), Saturday, 5 November 2011 06:55 (fourteen years ago)

five months pass...

i've started el shaddai (a nice $18 used pickup)

idk dudes. it's wild, very pretty, i love seeing japanese games get super sacrilegious with western mythoi, but this combat, ooof. after arkham asylum it's just very bad. i'd rather watch someone else play it i think.

goole, Thursday, 3 May 2012 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

How far in are you.

Comparing the combat to Arkham is really unfair because Arkham is basically the best brawler mechanics ever imo

polyphonic, Thursday, 3 May 2012 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

not far at all. the neon city skyscraper bit?

well, sux2b el shaddai then!

goole, Thursday, 3 May 2012 23:16 (fourteen years ago)

i hate to say this but the combat doesnt really get better, altho at a certain point it can get kinda flowy and mesmerizing, which fits the weirdo vibe of the game imo.
