Secondary black mage and you should be fine

I started playing this again but only because I got about twelve hours in to the new Tactics Ogre and realized I was better off playing FFT. The new TO is, however, gorgeous and it plays so smoothly. When you install the game to your memory card you will only hear the disc drive chirp when it initially loads the game. After that your PSP will be silent, and your battery life will will give you more hours than FFT. But, at least at the point I'm at, there is little actual customization of characters. They're all virtually identical, except for the dude with the wings who is just so much better than everybody else. The level design is also very flat and too spacious. So many times in FFT you have to confront someone who's shooting at you from the top of a windmill or a knight who's standing strong in a doorway or a mage that's raising hell from behind some crates.
I like this thread. I've been playing FFT for almost thirtteen years, dutifully coming back to it every year so, but have never finished it. I will probably never finish it.

five maxed Chemist/black mages with good guns and reflect magic should be able to get off three kills every round and heal/resurrect any fallen; i think you could breeze through the game pretty easily (if tediously) that way.

once you get past the first ten hours of course
You can install TO to memory from disk? How many games have this functionality?

w/ the scc you cant use any secondary abilities but yeah, its been easy enough so far, if boring. once i realized you cld 100% one shot kill any undead the only real challenge has been putting gil into potions/phoenix downs
one thing that id forgotten is how good the maps are in this game & how many small details play into things e.g. physical attack % being lower in the dark, rain enhancing lightning elemental spells
― Lamp, Sunday, 15 May 2011 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link
chemist seems like a boring scc because of the high survivability

ohhhh no secondary huh.yeah still should be doable but man that is gonna be tedious after awhile

fwiw, i lost nobody on my team on my last playthrui never ever lose team members when i play; i'll reset the game if somebody diesi'm normally not like that with games but FFTactics brings out the motherhen squad commander in me

It's the first I've seen... oddly this feature is arriving at the very end of the PSP's life. Took up practically all the free space on my memory card, but like I said above, the game runs smoooooth.

yeah i chose chemist cuz its a class i hadnt really used them much in any of my previous playthroughs & hadnt thought much abt how best to use them. even w/ the terrible stat grown i still have yet to lose a battle
― Lamp, Sunday, 15 May 2011 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Ok, the iphone version's out. I've never played any version of this before. I should buy it, right? I mean, I keep going into the app store, and hovering over the buy button, but...£10.99 feels so steep for such an old game.

the reviews have not been kind; apparently it's a very sloppy port.

is level 49 about right for your main character at the beginning of chapter three?

there are so many great little details about this game that dont ever end up mattering at all

anyway i am playing this game again and really enjoying it, theres just so much stuff and somehow most of the battles are genuinely interesting to fight despite my having put like thousands of hours of my life into playing this game and understanding how it works

shocked they haven't made an FFT2 yet.

favourite class: time mage. i like their hats
this comment traveled thru time from 3 years ago to be super OTM right now
i missed this thread :)

Haste and Slow opened my eyes to the idea of "power scaling" in gaming in general. As an 18- or 19-year old I expected each successive class unlock to present progressively bloodier and higher-damage skill and spell options. It felt like Time Mage took ages to unlock and was kind of pathetic,
it was only much later when I realized that there's a reason they don't give you Time Mage right away and make you work for it.

secret hunt is the most busted ability in the game?
― ≖_≖ (Lamp), Saturday, 8 November 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link
they have! but they're for GBA/DS. i played the first one (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance) and it's fun but suffers in comparison to the original. they added a Judge system which is sometimes fun but mostly annoying. and the story (disclosure: i only played through about 12 hours or so) was pretty mediocre.

oh, duh, i'm sure you know about those. i guess you mean a sequel that takes place during the Lion War and isn't about daydreaming schoolchildren?

i liked the first ds fft but it doesnt have the same depth as the psx game
rn i am fighting the urge to manage my level advancement to maximize stat growth because i really dont want to fall down that rabbithole

i thought the setup of the gba one was really affecting
it sort of felt arbitrary and failed to compel once it got to landmarks on maps, though, a bit like legend of mana

disgaea is extremely anime voice but the way it encourages experimentation and exploits is sui generis and great. i haven't played since the PS2 but i've heard the recent PC port isn't great.
