One time in the original San Francisco Rush I jumped my VW bus off of something into an endless grey void LOL.

Also there was this one hill where, if you hit it at the right angle, you jumped directly up into the air at a 90 degree angle. Why was that so hilarious? Oh right, DRUGS.

Oh yah, the hacky sack level in California Games. Hatris is funny because I can't make any sense of it as a faux-tetris, wtf it's just a lotta hats.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

What the hell was he thinking? "I know how I can transcend my masterwork---haberdashery!" Hatris was put out by some no-name distributor, I think it was stillborn at the press.

Roger Dean designed the Tetris logo!

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 12 October 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

From the instruction manual:

If the hats should pile up to the top of the play field, you're out! But don't panic! As you stack hats, you'll get help from your Russian friends; Alexey and Vladimir. You can use them to move stacks and discard unwanted hats, or save them for cash bonuses in avoided overtime.

Maybe if your Russian friends were the chix from tATu it would've gone over better?

||||||||, Sunday, 10 May 2026 13:18 (one month ago)

it seems pretty bad but i don't care enough

games criticism is in a dire state and pretty much always has been

ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 04:21 (one month ago)

*but i don't care enough to find out for myself

ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 04:21 (one month ago)

but it’s really dire now i think

z_tbd, Monday, 11 May 2026 04:22 (one month ago)

i don't think that it's really gotten meaningfully worse, it's just been awful as long as i can remember and there's decent bits here and there on the fringes these days but never anything more

broadly, some problems that come to mind:
-reviews heavily tend towards engaging with games as products rather than art, there isn't really a healthy culture of criticism overall
-games are generally much more time consuming than music or film so the scale of coverage possible for critics is much smaller
-the media ecosystem is extremely top-heavy in its coverage, much more than in other mediums, there's not much in the way of healthy niches away from the immediate mainstream
-the games publishing ecosystem is more chaotic and it's very hard for most games other than the big aaa studios + a few particular bigger indie publishers to get much coverage at all
-gamers as a population are probably generally crazier in how they engage with reviews than the kpop fans who harass critics who give kpop albums anything but positive reviews
-there's no money in any of this for anyone and the economics of everything are just even worse than other forms of criticism

ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 09:47 (one month ago)

I feel that a lot of video game criticism, at least the stuff I engage with, is in the form of live streams or long form video, which seems to serve the media under consideration and ssolve the problems you list. People like Jacob Geller or youtubers like MinnMaxx (which often involves Geller). They're smart, seem to feature plenty of robust debate and discussion, and they're fun, too. (Geller's book of essays is great, btw.)

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 May 2026 12:38 (one month ago)

there's some ok stuff on youtube but it's a real shame that that's the only real way for it to have any sort of broad audience, video essays are just not a very good medium and there's plenty that might have something interesting to say but don't justify their length at all

ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 13:16 (one month ago)

I disagree. Maybe the epic five hour video model is a bit too much, but I've seen a lot of people do good, smart, tightly written/edited things with the format, and of course it lends itself well to discussing a dynamic visual medium like games. I do think the loose podcast format often doesn't really help, since it encourages time-wasting chit-chat and goofiness, like a morning drive show on the radio, but that at least keeps the vibe jovial.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 May 2026 13:51 (one month ago)

a 5 minute video feels like 3 hours for me and "goes on too much" is not a criticism i'd level at any other artform

Wildfowler (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 May 2026 14:08 (one month ago)

https://theonion.com/christ-article-a-video-1819595653/

a lot of the better places gradually falling to "wahhh we don't review games any more because it takes too long and they don't get enough cliiiicks" is bad imo

The hardware editor of (the shambling husk of) Rockpapershotgun got promoted to Deputy Editor recently and apparently said "we need to do more hardware reviews because it's important we all understand how the games we play are made", fuck outta here

mostly sad lols from this piece about Amazon's disastrous game studios & their AI push, but this bit tickled me

"For other Amazon games, meanwhile, generative AI's use was more upfront. Courtroom Chaos starring Snoop Dogg, for instance, is a generative AI powered game, where players can engage in LLM-based debates with the rapper over generated legal cases."

https://www.eurogamer.net/amazon-ai-game-project-trident-laid-off-anyway-report

Wildfowler (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 May 2026 15:07 (one month ago)

I mean we'd be training the AI, so paying us would've made sense.

Major Kirascuro (Leee), Thursday, 14 May 2026 16:23 (one month ago)

i've really been enjoying retropals lately. i generally don't go for the "people streaming stuff" model, but the hosts have a good rapport and are well versed in, well, terrible games. i was looking for a stream showing off the games for the Mega Duck (aka the Cougar Boy), and they delivered in spades.

if i haven't recommended them before, i also strongly recommend A Question of Character at http://www.youtube.com/@AQuestionofCharacter . i don't laugh out loud very often, but this channel _regularly_ causes me to do so. any channel that make a chronic sadgirl like me laugh as hard as it does gets my strongest recommendation.
