My PS3 YLOD'd a week before this PSN nonsense happened. I had been thinking about either paying to have it repaired or even buying a new one, but now I am thinking about making the leap to 360 (or possibly just getting Apple TV and sticking to PC gaming).
― rockapads, Friday, 6 May 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
yeh cos 360s are renowned for their reliability :por wait 12-18 months for next xbox maybe?http://www.develop-online.net/news/37618/Develop-source-New-Xbox-console-on-desks-at-EA
― zappi, Friday, 6 May 2011 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
tbf 360s die but iirc they dont vomit their users' personal information all over the internet
― Romford Spring (DG), Friday, 6 May 2011 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, that's the thing. it was a total one-two punch to the nuts.

A week after I put fraud alerts on my credit via Equifax, I got a letter supposedly from TransUnion asking me for my SSN, permanent address verification, and $8. Sounds fishy as hell.

wait, does it mean you can't access the internet at all on the ps3? ie no iplayer, 4od, i love film streams ?
― remove this man from the internet (Ste), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 13:02 (fifteen years ago)
It keeps telling me I need to be signed in.
But - weirdly - my games are capable of downloading updates...!
― 40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 13:14 (fifteen years ago)
I don't have Lovefilm, but apparently Netflix works if you try it three or four times. (The first few times it says you need to be signed in and then.. it just works.)
― 40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 13:15 (fifteen years ago)
Netflix apparently has some sort of failover if you can't sign in, but I'd almost guess they had to badger Sony to allow them to do that without being signed into PSN.
Hulu Plus is still dead in the water due to the fact it requires you to log into PSN before its own service.
The sort-of irony here is that Sony was much more accommodating for third-party developers than Microsoft when it came to sign-in and data storage, as far as I can gather. That's why Portal 2, on the one day it actually worked online on the PS3, was able to sign into Steam. iirc the xbox version can't?
― mh, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 13:51 (fifteen years ago)
iplayer + 4od still work although last time i tried the latter i could get anything newer than a week old.
― ledge, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:00 (fifteen years ago)
couldn't
Yesterday I boxed up all non-exclusive PS3 games, gonna trade them in for the 360 versions. I'm done, it's a Blu-ray player now unless I want to play Demon's Souls or something.
― AaronHz, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 15:18 (fifteen years ago)
amazing how badly they've fucked themselves with this. you would think they'd have a failsafe quickfix solution that they could roll out by region but shutting off EVERYONE for the better part of a month and a half with no warnings, no updates and no promises feels deadly.
― Stone Colde Sylke Freek (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

well i'm a reluctant to put too much blame on Sony for all this, lets not forget those filthy hackers out there are the real fuckers that need to be fried for all this.

I was kind of hoping to play Beyond Good and Evil HD this month.
Instead I've decided to finish Red Dead Redemption and I am having so much fun that I'm not even noticing my bank account being drained every time I switch it on.

Not as much as you'd expect according to our numbers. But they're still in decline, I'd give it another week or two then see how things look.

You're saying I should sell quick?
― NoShoutsNoCalls (Leee), Saturday, 14 May 2011 18:11 (fifteen years ago)
I doubt the market will crash or anything, but even before the outage, most major retailers started discounting all three systems or offering $50 gift cards with one. With E3 around the corner, the Wii 2 already announced, I'm expecting price drops or new SKUs for every system. The original Wii drop is already pretty much in effect, with the new Mario Kart bundle.

I was fully expecting it to be a free copy of PAIN but that's a pretty good offer right there. my PS3 choices are pretty much set in stone (had owned LBP & Infamous previously but sold them a while back) - anyone have any feedback about the options on the PSP side?
― you penis-curling she-devils (jamescobo), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:15 (fifteen years ago)
Assuming I already have the Wipeout games and no others in the list, what are my best options?(US)
― mh, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:16 (fifteen years ago)
Off another forum (presumably from a US blog):
The games are mostly on the older side but it's a nice lineup:
PlayStation 3
LittleBigPlanetInfamous*Wipeout HD/FurySuper Stardust HDDead Nation
PSP
LittleBigPlanetModNationPursuit ForceKillzone Liberation
The lineup's a little bit different in Europe:
LittleBigPlanetInfamous*Wipeout HD/FuryRatchet and Clank: Quest for BootyDead Nation*
LittleBigPlanet PSPModNation PSPPursuit Force*Killzone Liberation*Asterisks can be a scary thing, but in this case, it's only scary if you're from Germany, where Sony's swapping those games for a few others, most likely due to the country's stringent content restrictions. inFamous and Dead Nation are placed with Super Stardust HD and Hustle Kings, while Killzone Liberation and Pursuit Force transform into Everybody's Golf 2 and Buzz! Junior Jungle Party.
As already announced, you'll also gain access to 30 days of PlayStation Plus. Existing members will simply receive an additional month. Sony will also have a lineup of "On Us" movies available to watch, too. If the lineup of games available is anything like the movies, it's reasonable to expect Sony-produced flicks.
PlayStation Home users are in for something, too, though Sony isn't saying what.
It's worth pointing out again that this lineup is for European customers and could differ in the US.
