The Playstation 3 is IDENTITY THEFT

My PS3 YLOD'd a week before this PSN nonsense happened. I had been thinking about either paying to have it repaired or even buying a new one, but now I am thinking about making the leap to 360 (or possibly just getting Apple TV and sticking to PC gaming).

A week after I put fraud alerts on my credit via Equifax, I got a letter supposedly from TransUnion asking me for my SSN, permanent address verification, and $8. Sounds fishy as hell.

wait, does it mean you can't access the internet at all on the ps3? ie no iplayer, 4od, i love film streams ?

It keeps telling me I need to be signed in.

But - weirdly - my games are capable of downloading updates...!

I don't have Lovefilm, but apparently Netflix works if you try it three or four times. (The first few times it says you need to be signed in and then.. it just works.)

Netflix apparently has some sort of failover if you can't sign in, but I'd almost guess they had to badger Sony to allow them to do that without being signed into PSN.

Hulu Plus is still dead in the water due to the fact it requires you to log into PSN before its own service.

The sort-of irony here is that Sony was much more accommodating for third-party developers than Microsoft when it came to sign-in and data storage, as far as I can gather. That's why Portal 2, on the one day it actually worked online on the PS3, was able to sign into Steam. iirc the xbox version can't?

iplayer + 4od still work although last time i tried the latter i could get anything newer than a week old.

Yesterday I boxed up all non-exclusive PS3 games, gonna trade them in for the 360 versions. I'm done, it's a Blu-ray player now unless I want to play Demon's Souls or something.

amazing how badly they've fucked themselves with this. you would think they'd have a failsafe quickfix solution that they could roll out by region but shutting off EVERYONE for the better part of a month and a half with no warnings, no updates and no promises feels deadly.

Not as much as you'd expect according to our numbers. But they're still in decline, I'd give it another week or two then see how things look.

I doubt the market will crash or anything, but even before the outage, most major retailers started discounting all three systems or offering $50 gift cards with one. With E3 around the corner, the Wii 2 already announced, I'm expecting price drops or new SKUs for every system. The original Wii drop is already pretty much in effect, with the new Mario Kart bundle.

Well, I just got offered a firmware update in the US, so it might be!

..aaaand it tells me the network is still undergoing maintenance if I try to sign in. So they're partway rolled out.

Not much psn functionality for my portable yet, it seems. But it's gratifying that at least something happens.

I was fully expecting it to be a free copy of PAIN but that's a pretty good offer right there. my PS3 choices are pretty much set in stone (had owned LBP & Infamous previously but sold them a while back) - anyone have any feedback about the options on the PSP side?

As already announced, you'll also gain access to 30 days of PlayStation Plus. Existing members will simply receive an additional month. Sony will also have a lineup of "On Us" movies available to watch, too. If the lineup of games available is anything like the movies, it's reasonable to expect Sony-produced flicks.

PlayStation Home users are in for something, too, though Sony isn't saying what.
