So I picked this up yesterday. It's a blast, especially if you liked the first two games. Going back to 2-D was a great move. Story mode is actually really entertaining (albeit hella cheesy, but it's MK so that's a given).

the Shaolin Monks game was really good, especially if you loved MK2 like I did; just nonstop action, Die Hard Arcade style

oh man, the new game is so wonderfully stupid. i'm amazed they put this much effort into such an idiotic story, and i love it.

Yeah I got the new one yesterday for cheap and it is pretty goddamn awesome

the story mode is what my 12-year-old self really wanted out of the movie

another plus to this game is that it makes it really really obvious if you have worn contact points in your controller buttons FUCK U I PRESSED A style.

Definitely MK3. On top of having a fat cop and losing the cool ninjas in favor of dumb robots, they toned down the oriental flavor massively. The coolest thing about MK was that it was the closest to a Big Trouble in Little China fighting came you could get. MK3 just had no style.

The background were sometimes cool though. I think Ultimate MK3 was a step back in the right direction. But yeah, the cop thing really seals the deal.

Also, those fatalities, you can tell they really just didn't give a shit in MK3, reusing the same explosions-of-blood and exploding-guts animations over and over again.

Glancing through the early user reviews and folks, so far it seems like the new one has gone wrong in two key ways: having maddeningly onerous lootbox unlocks, and having female characters that are wearing clothes

i don't really follow MK these days but i think the chainsaw guy from Mandy would be a cool and fitting character for the series

i played mortal kombat mythologies sub zero a lot as a kid bc i was obsessed with the cut scenes (which are... real lol to me at this point in my life) and i thought it was such a cool idea (a mortal kombat platformer *should* be a cool thing!). however: fundamentally unplayable game

MK11 at its core, has gone right!
The abominable, tedious unlock grind and always online games-as-a-service is godawful though.
I feel you could replace the term "MK11" here with so many games in 2019.
Female characters ARE a lot better in this one, though credit due to MKX for starting their trend of actually designing them decently

Still, it's MK - totally worth it for the goofy single player experience even if you can't/don't want to play with others. They've been a lot better than Capcom in at least delivering that. (Though I hate that so much is gated behind the online Towers. And the AI battles are such a waste of time as much as they were in Injustice 2.)

Only one of those I've played are Streetfighter II. I used to like MK1 and 2 on the SNES. I getcha though, just impressed they've managed to do so many, topping them every few years like the FIFA games

just watched mortal kombat (2021) and honestly couldn't have asked for anything more than what i got.

sold!

it has:

2-3 really nicely staged and executed scenes
2-3 performances with enough charisma to carry the terrible dialog (though sadly not the lead guy who is basically one of derek zoolander's model friends enlisted to act)
3-4 moments that will make you go yesssssss if you have any affection at all for the games
1 very funny, subtle-enough callback to the gameplay of the first couple editions that should make you smile

as an object of IP care and feeding it does more than enough
